After moving from Kenya to the US, I noticed how different many laws are, and how difficult it can be to navigate these changes. I post my stories and other immigrants' stories of dealing with legal issues that may be very different from our native countries.
Cyber Laws : National and International Perspective.
The kenya legal project
1. The Kenya Legal Project
When I first moved to America, I didn’t know much at all about the law. I knew enough to get
here, successfully navigate immigration, and get the things I needed—but that was all. I didn’t
know anything about America’s laws on traffic, or families, or even what to do if someone hurt
me.
It was a confusing place to be in my first year or so, as I moved from Kenya to a whole new
world. My home country is unique in its own way, which made it hard, at first, to get myself
accustomed to United States law.
Now, though, I’ve learned a lot, and now, I want to share my knowledge.
2. About the Author
I moved from Kenya to America just a few years ago, settling state-side with a few family members who
had already moved. My parents wanted me to get a different learning experience than the ones they
had, growing up in Kenya, but they didn’t count on how much of a fish out of water I’d feel like.
At first, I didn’t know what I wanted to do. I changed my major a few times, unsure how to fit in when I
only had my family to rely on.
Eventually, I found a like-minded group of international students who all had the double-duty of
learning for their degrees and learning for their personal lives. Some even came to the school without a
grasp on English, but they were learning.
That made me feel bolder when it came to my own education. I wanted to understand the nation
around me. Then, my aunt was involved in a car accident, which was tough on the family. We didn’t
know who to turn to or where to start. That’s when I decided to study American laws.
3. A Unique Perspective on American
Law
While I’m still a student, learning the laws around me, I’m learning quickly just how many laws
are so different for those of us who grew up elsewhere. People even drive on the opposite side
of the road from Kenyans, so there is a lot to learn for many of us.
That’s why I’m so eager to share what I’m learning. I understand that international students and
people might have a hard time with these changing laws, so I’ve dedicated this blog to learning
and sharing these laws. I’ll also compare some of these laws, where I can, to highlight just how
different the legal systems are.
4. Learn More About the Project
I want to learn more, not just about my new home, but about how it compares to my home
country and other places around the world. There’s a lot to learn about other countries around
the globe, and I’m interested in learning more about just how different these nations can be
through the legal system.
If you’re curious about American law and how it compares to other countries, I’ll be updating as
much as I can. As a law student, I want to keep you updated as I learn, so check out the
comparisons I offer here.
