HOMONYMS

Objectives:
After going through this module, you should be able to:
• show understanding about homonyms; EN3V-III-e-f-13.
• match homonyms correctly; and
• value patience in doing the activity.
Activity # 2.
In this activity, you are going to learn the words that are pronounced alike but have
different meanings. Read the following sentences. Note the italicized words. After
reading each sentence, answer the question that follows. Write your answers on
your paper.
1. You can read the poem aloud but you are not allowed to shout.
2. The children read the story of the red chicken.
3. Arthur has a wound on his heel that will take a few days to heal.
4. I blew the blue balloon.
5. My sister sent one-cent.
The italicized words in the sentences are called homonyms.
Homonyms are words with the same sound and pronounced alike
but differ in meaning.
• In the first sentence, the homonyms are aloud and allowed.
• In the second sentence, the homonyms are read and red.
• In the third sentence, the homonyms are heel and heal.
• In the fourth sentence, the homonyms are blew and blue.
• In the fifth sentence, the homonyms are sent and cent.
Homonyms are two words which can have the same spelling or
pronunciation, but very different meanings. Some good homonyms
examples include ‘bear’, which is both the name of an animal and a
word meaning 'tolerating something'. Understanding context is the
key to knowing which words are used.
The word 'homonym' comes from the Greek word 'homonymos'
which means 'having the same name'. The prefix 'homo' means
the same, and the suffix 'nym' means name. Therefore,
homonyms are two words that look and/or sound exactly alike!
One of the most common homonyms examples in English is the word 'bat'. 'Bat'
can mean a piece of equipment you use in some sports, and it's also the name of
an animal. However, they both sound exactly the same when you say them out
loud, and they're spelt exactly the same way, too.
Activity # 3.
Direction: Underline the correct word inside the parenthesis.

Activity # 4.
Directions: Choose the correct word which matches the given
meaning.
1. A small plant that is grown for its beautiful blossom.

4. It is a vehicle or a machine that has wings and flies through the
air.
(plain- plane)
5. The food is taken into your mouth, chewed and swallowed.
(ate-eight)
3. Recently bought a ____ car. (new, knew)
Activity # 5.
Directions: Read the sentences. Find the homonyms and write them on your
papers.
1. I hurt my eye.
2. The child ate the eight bananas.
3. The maid made a cake.
4. Please do not untie the knot.
5. I wonder if the knight comes at night.

  • 4. Activity # 2. In this activity, you are going to learn the words that are pronounced alike but have different meanings. Read the following sentences. Note the italicized words. After reading each sentence, answer the question that follows. Write your answers on your paper. 1. You can read the poem aloud but you are not allowed to shout. 2. The children read the story of the red chicken. 3. Arthur has a wound on his heel that will take a few days to heal. 4. I blew the blue balloon. 5. My sister sent one-cent.
  • 5. The italicized words in the sentences are called homonyms. Homonyms are words with the same sound and pronounced alike but differ in meaning. • In the first sentence, the homonyms are aloud and allowed. • In the second sentence, the homonyms are read and red. • In the third sentence, the homonyms are heel and heal. • In the fourth sentence, the homonyms are blew and blue. • In the fifth sentence, the homonyms are sent and cent.
  • 6. Homonyms are two words which can have the same spelling or pronunciation, but very different meanings. Some good homonyms examples include ‘bear’, which is both the name of an animal and a word meaning 'tolerating something'. Understanding context is the key to knowing which words are used.
  • 7. The word 'homonym' comes from the Greek word 'homonymos' which means 'having the same name'. The prefix 'homo' means the same, and the suffix 'nym' means name. Therefore, homonyms are two words that look and/or sound exactly alike!
  • 8. One of the most common homonyms examples in English is the word 'bat'. 'Bat' can mean a piece of equipment you use in some sports, and it's also the name of an animal. However, they both sound exactly the same when you say them out loud, and they're spelt exactly the same way, too.
