Doculynx, Inc. Herndon, VA., Sep, 2011 to Dec 2014
SUMMARY: Senior DBA for Sybase ASE 15 and Rep 15 servers on AIX/Linux platforms, both physical and
virtual. Doculynx acquired Anacomp business and all responsibilities continued as described under Anacomp
between 2000 and 2011 ( see below ) in acquisition. Key facilitator in a second data center migration out of
Ashburn, VA. to Dallas, TX. in April 2013. For this migration, configured temporary system in Omaha, then as a
turnkey operation, shutdown, and shipped entire server set to Dallas, having it come online within 72 hours after
shutdown. Planned, documented, and physically powered down Ashburn side and worked with shipper to expedite.
Once this data center moved was completed, implemented migration from AIX physical hosts to Linux virtual
hosts for database servers. Handled Sybase new Asset Management keys due to the acquisition of Sybase by SAP.
Worked with key programmer in coding application for Oracle upgrade from 10 to 11.
Anacomp, Inc. Herndon, VA., Feb, 2000 to Sep 2011
SUMMARY: Senior DBA for Sybase ASE 15 and Rep 15 servers on AIX/Linux platforms, both physical and
virtual. Configured full 2-way replication to failover site; Senior DBA for MS SQL Server 2000/2005/2008, Oracle
10g/11g on Linux; For each RDBMS, managed all aspects of databases and database servers including software
installations, upgrades, capacity planning, DDL and DML scripting, security, backups, restores, connectivity,
replication, and tuning. Administered over 500 databases on up to 30+ servers with sizes ranging from 20 MB to 1.5
TB, providing leadership for junior DBAs and troubleshooting expertise for programmers. Authored shell scripts
for reporting. Maintained corporate documentation of database systems. Key participant in security audits and
Nessus scans,
DETAILS:
As initial DBA hired for Anacomp’s new Herndon data center in Feb. 2000, became team lead of DBA staff.
Interviewed DBA candidates, participated in hiring and performance reviews. Key player in weekly engineering
meetings that provided analysis of RDBMS performance and issues, upgrading and adapting as product matured.
Defined procedures for upgrades, migrations, batch programs, ad-hoc changes as well as for routine maintenance
procedures such as backups and capacity planning. Authored policy and procedures for DBA staff including ‘DBA’
best practices document.

2. In 7th
year, named manager of IT for the Production environment, managing up to 9 staff members. Included were
DBAs, Unix Admins, and Application Support Analysts. Performed resume screening, interviewing, candidate
selection, and managed staffing schedules and performance reviews. Facilitator of Change Management process,
approving and scheduling changes. Worked with accounting on hardware and software support contracts.
Lead player of IT team who completed the migration of in-house Anacomp Herndon Data Center to collocation in
Ashburn, VA. Project undertaken in February 2009 and completed in September 2009. Involved moving about
200 production databases in two distinct environments to the collocation with minimal disruption of work,
maintaining replicated data systems, deploying on new OS and Sybase versions, and also upgrading Anacomp
proprietary software at the same time. This required significant planning, testing, migration benchmarking, IP
changes, DNS and hostname changes, physical moving of hardware, and then shutdown and destruction of
existing old data repositories and re-sale of obsolete hardware. As the only DBA on staff, handled all RDBMS
migration. Installed new Sybase software, configured Sybase Asset Management licensing, built ASEs, configured
parameters, and then planned and executed every customer test, staging, and production database migration.
Carefirst Blue Cross/Blue Shield: Washington, DC, May 1993 to Feb 2000
SUMMARY: Primary DBA for Sybase SQL Anywhere databases on Novell server, Sybase ASE server on AIX,
MS SQL Server on NT server for Intranet databases, Intersystems (Cache) database on AIX and Oracle 7 on Novell
server. For all RDBMS monitored storage space, handled security, maintained backups, performed restores and
recovery. Participated in logical and physical database designs for corporate applications. Provided engine tuning
and connectivity support. Authored data extracts and shell scripts. Maintained documentation for corporate
standards. Extensive Y2K testing for all RDBMS systems.
DETAILS:
First Client/Server DBA working in the mainframe environment. Tasked with building and maintaining a number
of smaller environments for the company, including 4 instances of Sybase SQL Anywhere. Handled all aspects
from security to backups and upgrades. Planned and executed upgrade from Watcom 4.0 to SQL Anywhere 5.0
and then to 5.5. Sole support for managed care system MUMPS database running on AIX. Proprietary RDBMS
with different features than most DB engines. Handled security, backups, tuning, and report writing using SQL
conversion utility that attaches to a MUMPS database. Created extracts from MUMPS database and other Federal
ISAM database system to combine into one flat file which became daily hospital census for the managed care
physicians and nurses, available on the CareFirst Intranet. Well received and utilized for daily business activity.
Created extracts and wrote JCL for mainframe loading for Corporate COBOL driven reports. Managed legal
department database running Oracle 7 on Novell. Involved in setup and testing of new Facets system at Carefirst
running Sybase 11.0 on AIX. Trained peers on Client-Server RDBMS such as SQL Anywhere, MS SQL Server,
and Oracle running on Novell and Windows. Configured MS SQL Server 6.5 on Windows servers for Intranet
database system.
