it is a sPare time activitY engaged in
for relaxation and amusement.
Phobia- It is an intense fear of something that, in
really,poses little or no actual danger. If you have a
phobia, you probably realise that your fear is
unreasonable, yet you still can’t control your feelings.
Types of phobias –
There are three types of phobias, they are-
a.Specific Phobia – It includes the fear from natural
environment , blood, injury or from specific
situations.

3. b.Social Phobia- It is a fear of being judged by
others, public humiliation.
c.Agoraphobia- This is a fear from situations
due to some bad experience.
Cause of phobia-
1.It mostly begins during early childhood. They can be
caused by stressful experience, or a frightening event.
2.The limbic system of brain plays an important role in
forming memories and connecting them with emotion
and senses. When dealing with fear , the hippocampus
gland receive impulse from the nervous system and
allow it to connect the fear with a certain sense, such
as smell or sound.

4. Difference between normal fear and phobia
.Normal Fear
a. Getting nervous when
you see a bull or a group
of dogs.
b. Feeling a little queasy
when your blood is being
drawn due to any
wound.
c. Experiencing a fear
during climbing on a
ladder.
Phobia
a. Steering clear of
the park because you
might see a dog.
b. Avoiding necessary
medical treatment or
checkup’s because you
are terrified of needles.
c. Turning down a great job
because it’s on 10th
floor
of the office building.

1.Nomophobia - Phobia of battery dead of
mobile.
2.Thanatophobia- Phobia of death.
3.Phonophobia- Aversion from loud sounds.
4.Acrophobia- Phobia from height.
5.Haemophobia - Phobia from blood.
6.Androphobia- Phobia from men.
7.Glossophobia- Phobia of stage.
8.Ophidiophobia- Phobia of snakes.

Treatment of phobias-
Most phobias are curable, but no single treatment is guaranteed to work
for all phobias. In some cases, a combination of different treatments
may be recommended. The main treatment types are:
Desensitisation- It involves exposure therapy which gradually increases
the length of time exposed to phobia.
Computerised programmes
1. Fear fighter is a computer software programme you can access online.
2.It has been shown to be an effective self-help method for treating panic
disorder and phobia.
Medical treatments- Medical treatments are also preferred for this-
1.Tranquiliser
2. Beta blockers
3. Antidepressents
