Uses of Past Simple (Verb To Be)
We can use the past simple of the verb to be to
talk about situations and states in the past.
We were happy yesterday.
I was at my granny's house
yesterday.
We DO NOT use action verbs with was/were in Past
Simple.
"WAS"
era/estaba/estuve
I, he, she, it
I was here yesterday.
He was sad.
She was tired after school.
It was sunny last week.
"WERE"
eran/estaban/estuvieron/éramos/
estuvimos
we, you, they
We were at school.
You were pretty last night.
They were the winners.
Subject + Was/Were + Complement
STRUCTURE
Affirmative sentences
My sister was at the park
The children were late for school this morning.
Subject + Was/Were + Not (Wasn't / Weren't) + Complement
STRUCTURE
Negative sentences
My sister wasn't at the park
The children weren't late for school this morning.
Was/Were + Subject + Complement + ?
STRUCTURE
Interrogative sentences
Was my sister at the park?
+Yes, she was. | -No, she wasn't.
Were the children late for school this morning?
+Yes, they were. | No, they weren't.
Wh-Word +Was/Were + Subject + Complement + ?
STRUCTURE
Interrogative sentences
WH QUESTIONS
Where was your notebook?
It was in my schoolbag.
Why were you late this morning?
Because I was tired and I got up late.
