TRAINING EVALUATION
Concept of Evaluation
 Evaluation is the assessment and control of the progress of the
training programme.
 Evaluation is undertaken to improve training processes or to
decide the future of a programme.
 It is a systematic process to determine the worth, value or
meaning of an activity or process.
Types of Training Evaluation
Methods of Training Evaluation
Kirkpatrick Four Level approach
Using the Kirkpatrick model
 Level 1 (Reaction)
 completed participant feedback questionnaire
 informal comments from participants
 focus group sessions with participants
 Level 2 (Learning)
 pre- and post-test scores
 on-the-job assessments
 supervisor reports
 Level 3 (Behavior)
 completed self-assessment questionnaire
 on-the-job observation
 reports from customers, peers and participant's manager
 Level 4 (Results)
• financial reports
• quality inspections
• interview with sales manager
CIRO Model of Training Evaluation
Return on Investments (ROI)
 ROI is the measure of monetary benefits obtained by an
organization over a specified time period in return for a given
investments in a training and development programme.
 ROI is the extent to which the benefits (output) of training and
development programme exceed the cost (Inputs).
Cost and Benefits involved
Training Cost Training Benefits
Training design cost Labor savings
Promotional cost Increase in Productivity
Administration cost Other cost savings
Faculty costs Other income generation

Benefits of Training Evaluation
 Evaluation ensures accountability - Training evaluation ensures that training
programs comply with the competency gaps and that the deliverables are not
compromised upon.
 Check the Cost - Evaluation ensures that the training programs are effective
in improving the work quality, employee behavior, attitude and development
of  new  skills  within  the  employee  within  a  certain  budget.  Since  globally
companies  are  trying  to  cut  their  costs  without  compromising  upon  the
quality, evaluation just aims at achieving the same with training.
 Feedback to the Trainer / Training - Evaluation also acts as a feedback to the
trainer  or  the  facilitator  and  the  entire  training  process.  Since  evaluation
accesses individuals at the level of their work, it gets easier to understand the
loopholes  of  the  training  and  the  changes  required  in  the  training
methodology.
