This document provides information about three different forest types: Mediterranean forests, coniferous/taiga forests, and mangrove/swampy forests. It describes the location, climate, dominant trees, and examples of each. Mediterranean forests are located around the Mediterranean Sea and have hot, dry summers and cold, wet winters. Common trees include oak, eucalyptus, and southern beech. Citrus fruits and grapes are mainly grown. Coniferous/taiga forests are found in northern latitudes and high altitudes, with extremely cold winters and cooler summers. They contain tall evergreen trees like pine, fir and spruce. Mangrove/swampy forests are located in coastal sw

of the Almighty!
3. ExpectedLearning
Outcomes
1.Learners will be able to
differentiate between
Mediterranean, Coniferous
and Mangrove forests.
2.Learners will be able to locate
the places where the above
forests are found on map.
4. Mediterranean forests
• Location- These forests are
Primarily Located around the
areas of Mediterranean sea , this
is one of the major reasons
these forests are called
Mediterranean forests and they
are Mostly located in the
western margins of continents
like Africa , Australia and
America.
5. • Climate - The Summers are hot and dry.
The winters are Cold and wet.
The average temperature in Winter ranges
between -1°C to 18 °C Whereas ,
The average temperature in Summer
ranges between 10 °C to 22°C.
• Trees -Trees growing in these regions
have waxy leaves, thick barks, and long
roots to conserve water during summer.
The forests are very open with Wides
spaces between trees.
• Examples – Oak Tree , Eucalyptus Plants
and Southern Beech trees.
7. Question time
1.Describe the climate of Mediterranean
forests.
2.What are the main kinds of fruits grown in
Mediterranean forests?
8. Coniferous/Taiga
forests
• Location - These forests are
found in the higher latitudes of
Northern Hemisphere like
Eurasia, North America and
North Polar Region. They are also
found in the High Altitudes
(Height) Regions of India like the
Himalayas.
• Climate - These forests have
extremely cold climate. The
average temperature in winter
is -54°C to -1°C, while
the temperatures in summer are
-7°C to 21°C.
9. • Trees - These forests consist of
tall, straight and widely spaced
evergreen trees. The trees are
usually conical in shape with
needle shaped leaves which
protect them from snow.
• Types of trees - Pine, Chir,
Cedar, Fir, Spruce Trees are some
of the kinds of trees grown in
Taiga forests
10. • Wildlife- Taiga forests are known for housing several animals , some of
them are - Silver Foxes, Minks, Muskrats, Polar bears etc.
11. Did you know?
• Taiga is another name for
Coniferous forests which means
‘untouched’.
• The soil is very thin due to the
cold weather and because of
these trees are more likely to
have shallow roots.
12. Mangrove/Swampy
forests
• Location-Mangrove forests
are found in swampy
regions of the deltas.
These forests are found in
Japan, India(Ganga-
Brahmaputra Delta,
Mahanadi- Godavari Delta
and Andaman and
Nicobar), China, North
America and South
America. (Mostly On the
edges)
13. • Climate - In these forest's
climate is humid. Average
temperature here in winters is
5°C whereas the average
temperature in summers is
22°C.
• Trees - Here in these forests the
trees can survive both in fresh
water as well as sea water. The
most commonly found roots
here are aerial roots . Examples -
, Red Mangrove, Mangrove
apple, White Mangrove ,
Mangrove palm etc.
Info Bubble -
Aerial Roots - The roots which usually
grow above the soil (earth) to absorb the
nutrients like air. Which they are
unable to get from the soil.
14. •Wildlife - Mangrove forests are home to a
variety of animals like Crocodiles, Birds, Tigers,
Deer, Monkeys etc.
