3. Anti-adrenergic Drugs (Sympatholytic Drugs)-
“These are drugs which antagonize the receptor action of adrenaline
and related drugs.”
Classification of Anti-adrenergic drugs-
1.Alpha-Blockers
i) Non-Selective ii) Selective
- Ergotamine - Prazosin
-Chlorpromazine -Terazosin
2.Beta-Blockers
i) Non-Selective ii) Selective
- Propranolol (1st Gen.) - Metopralol (2nd Gen.)
- Labetalol (3rd Gen.) - Atenolol (2nd Gen.)
4. MECHANISM OF ACTION-
-Anti-adrenergic agents block or inhibit the release and action of
Catecholamines ( epinephrine,dopamine and nprepinephrine).
-they are alpha and beta adrenergic receptor antagonists or blockers.
-Alpha-2 agonists inhibit release of neuroepinephrine in brain-decrease
effects on entire body, results decrease in B.P.
5. #PHARMACOKINETICS-Propranolol is well absorbed,
low bioavailability and metabolism- depends
on hepatic blood flow.
#PHARMACOLOGICAL ACTION (BETA BLOCKING DRUGS)-
1) Effect on CVS- decrease heart rate.
- decrease force of contraction
- decrease B.P.
2) Effect on kidney- decrease renin secretion from kidney.
3) Effect on CNS- Increased dreaming and nightmare.
4) Effect on skeletal muscle- decrease tremor.
5) Effect on uterus- relaxant activity.
6) Effect on Eyes- no effect on pupil size.
