This document outlines a study assessing biomedical waste generation rates and management systems in Lalitpur, Nepal hospitals. The study aims to: 1) assess waste generation rates, 2) analyze existing management practices, 3) determine knowledge/awareness of individuals involved, and 4) identify environmental and health risks of biomedical waste. The methodology describes studying randomly selected Lalitpur healthcare facilities from April to October 2019 to review literature, assess waste, survey staff, interview managers, analyze data, and report findings. The estimated budget is NPR 61,000. The expected outcomes are assessments of waste generation rates and management practices, and determinations of knowledge/awareness levels.

2. INTRODUCTION
• Biomedical waste is any waste generated during the diagnosis, testing, treatment, research
or production of biological product for humans or animals.
• 85% health care waste is nonhazardous, while the rest percentage is considered hazardous
which may be infectious, toxic or radioactive(WHO).
• The magnitude of biomedical waste generation is continually rising with the increase in
global population, along with the excess of medical facilities (citation).
• The poor BMWM practices has increased the risk to the environmental pollution and
public health (citation).
• Lalitpur being one of the major city of Nepal, the unplanned urbanization has led
to increased population which increases the number of HCI and ultimately the waste
generation rate (citation).

4. Methodology
1. Study area
• Lalitpur district, a part of the Bagmati
province is one of the three districts in
Kathmandu valley along with Kathmandu
and Bhaktapur.
• There are six municipalities in Lalitpur
district including three rural municipalities
and one metropolitan city.
• Health care institutes located at Lalitpur
districts will be selected randomly for the
implementation of this project.
