3. It is the passage by which a drug, poison or any
chemical substance is administered to the body either
directly at the site of action or in the systemic
circulation.

External application of the drugs to the surface for
localized action
Eg. Lotion ,ointment, spray, cream ,drops…etc
Deeper tissues
• Certain deep areas can be approached
• Eg. syringe , needle …etc
Arterial supply
• Close intra- arterial injection is used for contrast media in
angiography
• Eg. Anti -cancerous drug can be infused in femoral ..etc

• Oldest and commonest
• Non-invasive, painless , safer and convient
• Eg. Capsule , tablet , Syrups , elixir …etc
Limitations:
• Action of drug is slower
• May cause nausea and vomiting
• Cannot be used for unconscious and uncooperative patient
• First pass effect
