Muscles of mastication
1. MUSCLES OF
MASTICATION AND
ITS INNERVATIONS
Prepared by: Anish Dhakal (Aryan)
MBBS Student
Patan Academy of Health Sciences
2.
3. MEDIAL PTERYGOID
ā¢ Thick, quadrilateral muscle with two
heads of origin
ā¢ Origin
ā¢ Deep head : medial surface of
lateral pterygoid plate
ā¢ Superficial head: maxillary
tuberosity
ā¢ Insertion
ā¢ Medial surface of ramus & angle of
mandible
4. ā¢ Action
ā¢ Assists in elevation of mandible
ā¢ Protrusion (with association of
lateral pterygoid)
ā¢ Chewing movement of mandible
(with alternating activity)
ā¢ Vascular supply
ā¢ Pterygoid branches of maxillary
artery
ā¢ Innervation
ā¢ Medial pterygoid branch of
mandibular nerve
5. LATERAL PTERYGOID
ā¢ Short, thick muscles, arises by
two heads
ā¢ Origin:
ā¢ Superior : from infratemporal
surface & infratemporal crest of
greater wing of sphenoid
ā¢ Inferior : lateral surface of
lateral pterygoid plate
ā¢ Insertion
ā¢ Superior : joint capsule &
articular disc of
temporomandibular joint
ā¢ Inferior : pterygoid fovea on
anterolateral aspect of neck of
condyloid process of mandible
6. LATERAL PTERYGOID
ā¢ Vascular supply
ā¢ Pterygoid branches
from maxillary artery
ā¢ Innervation
ā¢ anterior division of
mandibular nerve
ā¢ Action
ā¢ Depression of
mandible
ā¢ Protrusion of mandible
(combined action with
medial pterygoid)
ā¢ Alternating activity,
side to side chewing
movement
7. TEMPORALIS
ā¢ Fan shaped
ā¢ Origin
ā¢ Floor of temporal fossa
below the inferior
temporal line
ā¢ Deep surface of
temporal fascia
ā¢ Insertion
ā¢ Converge & insert into
coronoid process of the
mandible involving its
tip, medial surface &
anterior border of ramus
of mandible
8. TEMPORALIS
ā¢ Vascular supply
ā¢ Deep temporal branches from the second part of the
maxillary artery
ā¢ Innervation
ā¢ Deep temporal branches of anterior trunk of the mandibular
nerve
ā¢ Action
ā¢ Elevates the mandible (closes mouth)
ā¢ Posterior fibers help retraction of the mandible
ā¢ Side āto-side grinding movements, by muscles of both sides
9. MASSETER
ā¢ Quadrilateral muscle
ā¢ Three layers of fibers
ā¢ Superficial layer
ā¢ Origin: anterior 2/3rd of lower
border of the zygomatic arch &
adjoining zygomatic process of
the maxilla
ā¢ Insertion: lower and posterior
part of the outer surface of
ramus of mandible
ā¢ Middle layer
ā¢ Origin: deep surface of anterior
2/3rd and lower border of the
posterior zygomatic arch
ā¢ Insertion: middle of mandibular
ramus
ā¢ Deep layer
ā¢ Origin: deep surface of
zygomatic arch
ā¢ Insertion: Upper and anterior
part of lateral surface of ramus
of mandible including a part of
coronoid process
10. MASSETER
ā¢ Vascular supply
ā¢ Masseteric branch of maxillary artery, facial artery and the
transverse facial branch of superficial temporal artery
ā¢ Innervation
ā¢ Masseteric branch of anterior trunk of mandibular nerve
ā¢ Action
ā¢ Strong elevator of mandible
ā¢ Superficial fiber help in protraction and deep fibers in
retraction of the mandible
