• Excessive bleeding following the
birth of a child
• Primary PPH = >500ml blood loss
• Minor PPH = up to 1000ml blood loss
• Major PPH = >1000 ml blood loss
4. Factors that increase your risk for
postpartum hemorrhage
• Multiples (twins, triples, etc.)
• Grand multiparity (history of 4+
pregnancies)
• Previous PPH
• Maternal age >40 years
• Maternal obesity
5. Medical measures used to control
PPH bleeding
• Blood transfusion
• Oxytocin administration
either
intravenous/intramuscular
• Cytotec placement rectally
• Methergine/Hemabate
intramuscular injection
• Balloon tamponade
