The New Path Forward for the Republican
Party: German Conservatism
Andrew Langford (BA, Political Science)
August 9, 2017
Introduction:
The 2016 Presidential Election yet once again showed how divided the United
States is. It showed how fragile the Republican Party is as it remains splintered
between the Progressive-Liberal wing, the self-proclaimed “Moderates” and
“Centrists,” libertarianism, the so-called “Alt Right,” and a deeply divided
conservative wing. The Progressive-Liberal Republicans claim to be conservative
as they collaborate with the Democrats to push for more government, higher
taxes, and more spending, deficits, and debt, claiming to be “bipartisan.” The
“Moderates” and “Centrists” are satisfied with how things are and want to keep
the status quo. Libertarian Republicans want to have a free market, based on
laissez-faire economics, and generally take a libertine view on religion, morality,
and social issues. The “Alt Right” is a splinter group without principle and with a
view of history and human development as evolutionary. We could probably split
conservatism into three main groups between fiscal/market conservatism,
national defense/foreign policy neo-conservatism, and moral/traditional social
conservatism.
Donald Trump managed to win the Republican Presidential Nomination in 2016,
averaging about 40% of the Republican Caucus/Primary vote, in a campaign
where 65% of Republicans polled wanted anybody besides Trump. Republicans
like Jeb Bush, Chris Christie, Ben Carson, Mike Huckabee, and Rick Santorum
eventually dropped out when they did not win very many votes in Iowa, New
Hampshire, and South Carolina. Marco Rubio failed to win his home State of
Florida, and only managed to win the Minnesota Caucuses and Washington, DC
and split the conservative vote with Ted Cruz. John Kasich was his strongest in
the Northeast and Midwest, managing only to win his home State of Ohio. Ted
Cruz won the Iowa Caucuses by a narrow margin over Donald Trump, lost the
South to Donald Trump, and did his best in the West where he won his home
State of Texas and won Kansas, Oklahoma, Utah, Alaska, Wyoming, Idaho, and
the Colorado delegation in the first round of voting, also managing to win the
Maine Caucus and Wisconsin Primary. Polls predicted Hillary Clinton would sail
to victory in November. The popular vote margin was extremely close as Donald
Trump swept the South and the West and won Pennsylvania, Florida, Ohio,
Indiana, Michigan, and Wisconsin.
Voter turnout hardly reaches 50% in US elections in these modern times. Most
eligible voters and voting age adults feel alienated. They feel their votes do not
count and do not matter and would not make a difference in elections. Millions
live and grow up in cities in dire poverty and in a state of perpetual dependence
on the government dole without any hope of a good education and a belief their
future will be as bad or worse. The “mentally ill,” “psychopaths,” and “social
outcasts” get segregated and isolated from society and popular culture. Suicide
is on the rise in the United States with new forms of bullying and abuse through
social media and cyber bullying. A majority of jobs are predicted to be taken over
by automated technology, artificial intelligence, and robots in an effort to be “cost
efficient” and “save” on money and resources, leaving more than half of the
national population without work and being without the necessary resources to
survive and without the necessary skills, abilities, and education for what few
jobs there are left. The government does little to address these issues. Politicians
among both Democrats and Republicans seek to advance their own interests,
special interests who support them, and their specific constituencies and/or
favored groups of people over the national interest.
Leaders and members of the Republican Party theorize as to why they lost after
every election they lose. The Progressive-Liberal Republicans claim it is because
the Republican Party needs to move Left closer to the Democrat Party. The
“Moderates” and “Centrists” claim the Republican Party needs to “moderate”
itself and move closer to the “Center.” Libertarian Republicans believe the Party
needs to campaign on “limited government,” “capitalism,” and a “live-and-let-live”
mentality. Progressive-Liberal Republicans, “Moderates,” “Centrists,” Libertarian
Republicans, and even fiscal/market conservatives and neo-conservatives call
for a unilateral “truce” on social issues in elections and mute religion and
morality. The conservatives claim the Republican Party should move further
Right. I believe these solutions are misguided in many ways. I recommend the
way forward is a different perspective and a new paradigm. I believe the way
forward for the Republican Party is with German Conservatism. I will explain the
fundamentals of German Conservatism in this piece and how and why it is the
only option for the Republican Party.
The Values of German Conservatism:
It is important to mention first of all German Conservatism is not foreign to the
United States. It is not foreign to the Republican Party. I am not talking about
Germany when I talk about German Conservatism. Germany is less German
today than it was 72 years ago. Germany is more liberal today than it is
conservative. I am talking about Germans inside and outside of Germany. I am
talking about the German World where Germans migrated, settled, and built
communities. The United States constitutes part of the German World in
Pennsylvania, the Midwest, and other areas where German communities spot
the map. This section will focus on the values of German Conservatism, four in
all.
Family:
The family is the most basic unit of society. It is the beginning of every
civilization. Family begins with marriage between a man and a woman for life.
Children should be raised in a home by and with a mother and a father. Marriage
and family are bound together in love, unity, and compassion. Villages,
communities, society, civilization, race, ethnicity, culture, kin, and nationality are
made up of families.
Many children live and grow up in less-than-ideal family settings today in the
United States and other modern societies. Many marriages end in divorce
because of infidelity, abuse, and other related reasons. Families are torn apart
and divided by divorce. Children lose in the divorce proceedings as the parents
fight in court for custody over the children, and the children are split between
both parents. Children who are born out of wedlock are increasingly more
common in modern civilization today. Millions upon millions of human babies die
of abortion because of unwanted pregnancies or because the man who got the
woman pregnant does not want the child and wants the woman to have an
abortion.
If the family suffers, society and civilization suffer. If marriage between man and
woman declines, humanity degenerates and falls. If family life and homes are
broken with poverty and abuse, individuals are likely to continue in lifelong misery
and fear, perpetual poverty, and a possible continuation of the cycle of
codependence and abuse. It is the responsibility of government and the top
priority of politicians to protect and advance family necessities and interests in a
way it would advance humanity and civilization in the generations to come.
Equality:
We had much debate and confusion about equality over the Centuries since the
Enlightenment. Liberal equality came to mean having all material things, tangible
possessions, ability, faculties, and mental capacity equal among all. It is defined
as roughly equal amount of income among all, equal income level, wealth
distribution as level as it is possible, same home, quality health coverage for all,
equal access to quality education, and equal access to full employment. It is a
nice utopian dream. But, who will provide for all of this? There is the problem.
Equality is defined by German Conservatism as equal rights among the citizens.
It is equal treatment before the law. The privileges of citizenship are the same
among all citizens and will be afforded to all who become citizens. The law
equally protects every citizen of every background, no matter where they live.
Everybody would have their due justice before the law. The equality of German
Conservatism is equality before God and the law.
Liberty:
Here is another controversial topic in the United States today. It is at the heart of
the political debate at every level. Liberals define property as positive freedom,
the freedom to do certain things and what the philosopher, Joel Feinberg, defined
as “manifesto rights.” Libertarians define liberty as strictly negative freedom, the
freedom from. Too many conservatives and many Republicans loosely throw the
term, liberty around without any idea, or at least giving a vague definition of what
liberty is and means to them. Liberty is a common value in the United States with
various definitions among various demographics, political parties, and interests.
Liberty is defined by German Conservatism as being free from government
interference and foreign powers, seeking to extend its borders beyond its
boundaries and create either an overland empire or an overseas empire. It is
liberty from mob rule, violence, civil war, anarchy, and instability. German
Conservatism is a right to your life, liberty, and property. It is the right to the
pursuit of one’s own happiness. What we commonly call “human rights” are
derived from humanity and given from one human-being to another as part of a
political plan and agenda and could be taken and/or transferred to another.
German liberty, or liberty as it is defined by German Conservatism, is God-given
and divinely inspired. It cannot be constitutionally take by government and
society and not be in violation of Natural Law.
Individuality:
Individuality is not the same as individualism. These two similar words with
“individual” as the root word do not mean the same thing. Individualism is a
political philosophy with its emphasis on the individual as the supreme good.
Individuality is defined as the qualities an individual is characterized by and what
distinguishes that individual from others; their separate, distinct existence. The
liberals take a hybrid view of individualism where individuals are free to decide
right and wrong, good and evil, and moral and immoral for themselves. They
promote and push “political correctness” to “protect minorities” and
“multiculturalism” to “promote diversity.” They see government as a benevolent
institution to “liberate” people and “create an environment” where everybody
could succeed, thrive, and flourish. The Marxists take it further with individualism
with promoting a “classless society” by creating a temporary “proletariat
dictatorship” and making everything common among all as they turn civilizations
into collectivizations.
Libertarians and many conservatives believe in what Herbert Hoover called
“rugged individualism.” It is the myth of the “self-made man.” It is the belief the
government only exists to “secure our rights.” Government, society, and
civilization is believed to be “a means to serve the ends of the individual.” It is a
twisted view of personal responsibility where what you do is pretty much up to
you because it is your “liberty,” your “right” to do what you want. Their belief is,
“You do what you want. It is your life.” As it is typical of libertarians and
conservatives like Tom Tancredo, they take the attitude of “Who’s the ‘Nanny
State’ to tell you what you can and cannot do?”
Politicians, political parties, bureaucrats, the media, the market, and academia
talk people of people as being part of a race, a culture, an ethnicity, a religion, an
age group, a number, a statistic, data information, and a demographic. There are
not any individuals in modern civilization. There are only peoples. There are only
masses and a collective. The Democrat Party targets voting blocks and minority
voter demographics in elections instead of all voters individually one at a time.
Unfortunately the Republican Party falls into the same practice of targeting
certain voter groups as opposed to all voter demographics as a whole.
Individuality is unique to every individual. It is the differences and distinctions
between individuals, obvious or not obvious. Every individual has and possesses
something that’s part of them, something inside of them, making them who they
are and making them unlike others. Every individual is not, cannot, and would not
be somebody else. They are not, cannot, and would not be somebody who they
are not. They should not attempt to be somebody else. Individuals should not
attempt to be somebody who they are not. True diversity is authenticity and in
being who you are and who you were meant and created to be.
I should dispel another common myth around the United States. It is the myth of
the “frontier” and the “Wild West.” The belief goes by a script like a man or a
woman leaves the comforts of the cities in the East to journey out to the West
“beyond the reaches of civilization” to make a name for themselves, create a new
life and a new home where they live for the rest of their lives as hermits, and
become a “new man” or a “new woman.” There is a problem with this mentality.
This myth assumes and presupposes the belief we live in a State of Nature in the
absence of law, government, and authority. It is the idea everybody is out for
themselves and responsible for their own survival and success. It is one’s will
and strength pitted against the will and strength of another. The myth of the “Wild
West” and “rugged individualism” created the mentality of the necessity to “adapt
to the times” and the idea of “survival of the fittest.” Individuality is not every man,
woman, and child out for him/herself. It is every individual as part of a whole in
comparison to every part of the body functioning as part of the whole. If one
individual malfunctions and underperforms, it undercuts the community and
undermines all of humanity. Every individual contributes a portion to the whole.
Every portion of that whole is a vital portion and essential. Some view God as a
watchmaker who left the Universe to operate on its own after Creation. But, every
mechanical clock and every mechanical watch needs to be maintained and kept
properly functioning.
High Principles of German Conservatism:
Mahatma Gandhi once wrote one of the seven deadly sins is “politics without
principle.” US politics turned poisonous, divisive, and vile. It is without principle.
We went from prizing character in politics and government to descending to the
depths of dividing along ideological lines, political party affiliation, and supporting
and voting for politicians and candidates who smear each other and their
opponents. Unfortunately, too many Americans engage in these vicious practices
inside and outside of politics. Liberals base their politics on creating “victims” who
they see as their duty to “protect” and “empower,” devising “programs” and
“entitlements” to “level the playing field” and viciously and mercilessly attack
those who disagree with them and their agenda as mean, cold, cruel, selfish,
stingy, heartless, insensitive, racist, sexist, xenophobic, homophobic,
transphobic, and/or intolerant. Libertarians see politics as “free for all,” “first
come first serve,” and based on the ideas of Social Darwinism and Evolution.
Conservatives too often swing back and forth between a carbon copy of
liberalism and a carbon copy of libertarianism. This section will be focused on the
high principles of German Conservatism. I identified five principles I will write
about in this section.
Honor:
We live in a world today where many feel they do not have anything to contribute
and just seem to waste space that would be suited better for somebody else or
something more important. Many do not vote in democracies and republics
around the world, feeling and believing their vote and voice do not matter and do
not make a difference. Many yet turn to big central bureaucratic government and
powerful global and regional institutions to solve their problems, take care of
them, and provide for them. They seem to have little to live for anyways. So,
that’s the general attitude among many, as their voices and concerns are
drowned out in the mass media and social media where it is usually twisted,
doctored up, and transmitted to the world.
One of the values of German Conservatism I wrote about earlier is individuality.
Every individual contributes to humanity as every spring and gadget contributes
to the function of a mechanical clock and a mechanical watch. Honor is defined
by German Conservatism as the internal worth and value of an individual. It is
about contribution. Everybody has a place in the family, community, culture, kin,
and nation in the German World. Every individual contributes to the whole of
humanity. We live in a superhero culture today with a mentality of social justice
and collective salvation. Many look to heroes like Spiderman, Superman,
Batman, Iron Man, and the Avengers as role models. Kids, teenagers, and young
adults especially get into the practice of superhero worship and aspiring to have
“super powers” and “save the world” and humanity from itself. German
Conservatism is more concerned with individuals. It is not a mentality of groups
and people as a collective. The view begins fro the bottom up with one individual
at a time, not as a factory program. It starts with taking one at a time and working
with them, not as a production assembly line. German Conservatism is about
individuals working with individuals one-on-one, mentoring and empowering each
to do the same for others one-by-one. It has a ripple effect on all who are directly
affected and eventually on all of humanity.
Duty:
We cannot have rights without duty. We cannot have liberty without duty. Rights
and liberty in the absence of duty is anarchy. It is the duty of every citizen to
uphold and obey the law, vote in elections, and serve in the military when the
situation demands it, exempting women from military service. Men have a
responsibility to their wives and children. Women have a responsibility to their
husbands and children. It is incumbent on the children to learn their duty to
family, community, and nation.
Loyalty:
Every individual has various loyalties. They have loyalties to family, community,
nation, humanity, and civilization. These loyalties extend to deity and religion for
some. Husbands and wives pledge loyalty to each other in marriage. They are
loyal to their children who in turn are loyal to them. Elected officials and the
military pledge their loyalty to the Constitution when they take the Oath. Loyalty
and duty are hallmarks of German Conservatism.
Hospitality:
Roman visitors who visited the Ancient Germanic Tribes in Northern Europe
observed they were welcoming and hospitable to them and others who passed
by. Tacitus wrote of the kindness and hospitality of the Germans in Germania.
They welcomed strangers, visitors, and foreigners into their homes and
communities. They shared what little they had and attended to the needs of their
visitors before they left and continued on their journey or returned home.
Hospitality and generosity were rare virtue at a time when politics and foreign
policy was zero-sum game, one’s gain meant another’s loss, and everything was
about trade, commerce, and the economy.
Courage:
Too many politicians today compromise values and principle for convenience and
expediency. They cave before the opposition and compromise in what they call
“working across the aisle” and being “bipartisan.” They betray the trust their
constituents bestowed upon them and sell their souls to special interests. They
return home to play to their party base to secure their respective party
nominations for reelection and usually position themselves in the “Center” to win
the “Moderate” voters in the hopes of winning reelection. They continue these
practices before, during, and after elections. It is gesturing and being without
substance.
The German civilization originated in an area originally of dense forests and bogs
with rivers bordering them in the East and West, the Alps in the South, and
Denmark bordering on the North. The Roman Empire threatened German
independence until AD 9. The Germans were threatened by the Vikings in the
North and the Slavs in the East in the Middle Ages. Robbers and marauders
threatened Medieval German towns, cities, and villages. The French constantly
threatened the Germans from the West. The Germans could have easily given
up, cowered, and buried their heads in the sand. But, they gathered, united in
strength, and fiercely and courageously fought their enemies off. They formed
local militias to defend and protect the people, their homes, and their livelihood.
Fortresses and castles protected the German frontier. The Germans are defiant
against all odds and take their stand against their enemies and adversaries.
Orlog, Wyrd, and Hamingja:
Humanity lost its significance today in modern society. People are degraded to
the lives of pigs, cows, and chickens. Individuals are seen as commodities to be
purchased, used, and exploited for the pleasure, benefit, and entertainment of
others. They get cast aside and publicly ostracized or handed off to the next
beneficiary after they fall out of use. People are extorted as money-making toys
and objects to be pushed, shoved, and dumped after they were used up. The
modern world views humanity as disposable and replaceable. It only holds
instrumental value today. The civilization of today only views individuals as a
means to an end. They are treated as animals who only seek material comforts,
luxury, and entertainment. The worldview of Ancient Germanic Mythology offers
an alternative to this mentality and worldview.
Orlog:
The Ancient Germans believed in the ultimate purpose, the great plan of
Creation. Orlog was cause and effect. Every creation has a purpose. Every
individual is important and significant. They have intrinsic worth and value in and
of themselves, each and every one. They have a purpose beyond themselves.
There was not, is not, and would not be any Evolution. Every individual was
divinely created. They have a reason and a purpose for their existence. It is what
Immanuel Kant called referred to as the “Principle of Humanity as an Ends.” It is
what’s commonly referred to as individuality among many.
Wyrd:
The Ancient Germans believed in destiny and becoming. Many believe their
destiny is determined by fate and chance. They claim their destiny was
predetermined by astrology, their birthstone, and the month, day, and/or year
they were born. We live in a celebrity culture with actors/actresses, rock stars,
and other celebrities placed on pedestals, deified, and worshipped. Many look to
them as their role models. Many blame their misfortunes on their signs and/or
birthstones and credit their signs and/or birthstones for their fortunes. They
compare themselves with their favorite celebrities, their favorite role models, and
faulty standards created by society and the mass media.
Wyrd is destiny as a personal journey of becoming. Individuals have the power to
be and become what and who they want to be and become. It is their personal
decision. It is a personal decision everybody will need to make. It does not matter
what others say. Tests, assessments, and IQ cannot accurately tell you what and
who you are and will be. Those decisions are personal and up to you.
Hamingja:
The Ancient Germans believed humanity is divine. Every German family was
believed to have descended from deity. Hamingja was defined as family
reputation. Every family had a reputation they were expected to hold and pass to
the next generation. They view death in battle as good and as martyrdom. A
warrior for deity was highly valued and virtuous in Ancient Germanic Mythology
and Civilization.
An assumption of Evolution is humanity evolved from apes. Evolution assumes
humanity evolves. Social Darwinism assumes some humans are superior, and
others are inferior. It is a master-and-slave view of “superior” individuals being
“destined to rule” and the “inferior” individuals being “doomed to slavery” to their
“superior masters” and being weeded out and dying off. Marxism takes the view
of humanity as cattle to be controlled, manipulated, and corralled into “utopia.”
Modernism treats individuals as numbers, statistics, mathematical figures, raw
data, and trends. Humanity is viewed by modernism as insignificant in the end.
Technocracy and globalism treat humanity as ignorant and too dumb to figure
anything out.
The worth of humanity is beyond use for trivial purposes, abuse, manipulation, a
natural resource to be exhausted, and for the entertainment of others. Humanity
naturally longs for and desires more than a telestial existence. Humans have the
potential to be divine. They are the eternal offspring of Divinity. The worth of a
human soul is in its divinity, perpetuity, and dignity. It is in their unique nature and
their divine potential. They are spiritual beings in physical form on earth. They
seek and long for a celestial experience in perfect form.
St. Peter counseled the Saints in his Second General Epistle,
“Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of God, and of
Jesus our Lord,
“According as His divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life
and godliness. Through the knowledge of Him that hath called us to glory and
virtue:
“Whereby are given unto us exceedingly great and precious promises: that by
these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption
that is in the world through lust.
“And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue, and to virtue
knowledge;
“And to knowledge temperance, and to temperance patience, and to patience
godliness;
“And to godliness brotherly kindness, and to brotherly kindness charity.
“For these things be in you, and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be
barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ” 2 Peter 1: 2-8).
The Republican Party:
The nature of US politics today makes it impossible to create consensus on
anything. Political parties turned more ideological than they were in the past. The
Democrat Party went from being a Moderate-to-Conservative political party to a
Far Left Marxist political party. The Republican Party is ideologically and
sectionally divided without any clear consensus on policy and principle. Minor
political parties like the Greens, Socialists, Prohibition, Natural Law, the
Conservative Party, Libertarians, and the American Constitution Party
occasionally siphon disaffected Left-wing Democrats and Right-wing Republicans
in elections, compounding the issue further. Candidates and politicians often
emerge as “Independent” and siphon a fairly high proportion of the vote, enough
either to swing the election one way or another or win the election themselves.
The low voter turnout in elections shows yet another sign of the deep divisions in
the United States and the disenchantment of a majority of the US voter
population.
Politicians and candidates make promises on the campaign trail to get elected
and reelected. They devise and present plans to voters of what they plan to do if
and/or when they are elected and reelected. They rarely keep the promises they
made on the campaign trail, if ever at all. These politicians and candidates run
into opposition and obstacles to putting their plans into force and often quickly
and easily give up, or compromise and end up with something very different from
what they want. It usually happens a newly elected President or a newly elected
Governor wants one thing, and Congress or a State legislature wants another
thing. There is a political impasse where the Executive and the Legislature
compete to outmaneuver each other. Democratic Party candidates campaign on
political, social, and economic grievances and promise to “do something” and “try
anything.” Republican Party candidates typically campaign on tax cuts for the
wealthy and middle class, spending cuts, build-up of the national defense and
military, securing the border, job creation, the economy, and entitlement reform.
Little is done to address the real issues, affecting real people across the United
States.
Ronald Reagan addressed the low voter turnout of Republican voters in 1974 at
CPAC 1975 and explained they stayed home and did not vote because they felt
there was not “a sufficient difference between the parties.” What Ronald Reagan
observed in 1975 holds true today. But, I would go even further than that. It is
among both Democrats and Republicans. It is among Third Party and unaffiliated
voters who decide to not vote because US political parties, politicians, and
candidates do not represent their true interests and seem to be deaf to their
voices. They see political parties, politicians, and candidates beholden to Wall
Street, Hollywood, Beltway, the corporate world, union bosses, political
machines, the mass media, and academia. They see political parties, politicians,
and candidates being bought off by big money and special interests. Many of he
US voting population do not vote because they feel they are ignored and/or
overlooked.
The way forward for the Republican Party is with German Conservatism. Family
should be a priority in politics and government again before anybody else and
anything else. Natural Law and unalienable rights need to be important in politics,
government, and elections again. Liberty should be redefined as God-given and
divinely inspired, something government and society cannot take at will. The
Republican Party needs to make individuality as part of its party platform.
A recognition of every individual as being of intrinsic worth and value in and of
themselves and each contributing to humanity and civilization needs to be part of
the Republican Party. Duty needs to be part of our politics and government again
as it is indispensible to independence and self-governance. Americans need to
prioritize their loyalties and put God, family, and country first. We should be more
hospitable to each other and others as citizens and be more civil. Courage is a
vital part to our personal lives and our national politics. Every individual is
important to our nation. We have a personal destiny to do what we want to do in
life and become what and who we want to be. We were divinely created and
have the potential to be divine. We need to restore principle to politics as citizens
of the United States.
Conclusion:
Republican Party leaders and activists got many things wrong. Progressivism
and liberalism harms the Republican Party and taints its credibility. Libertarianism
is reactionary and learns in the direction of anarchy. Internationalism and nation-
building harmed our reputation and image as a nation across the world. Talk of
tax cuts, balanced budgets, the economy, inflation and interest rates, and job
creation has little national appeal. Strict focus on social issues and traditional
principles is of little help to the Republican Party as well. “Reform Conservatism”
sounds more like a campaign slogan. “Compassionate Conservatism” is actually
aligned with Progressive-Liberalism and uncompassionate. The Alt-Right is the
worst development in the Republican Party over less than a decade, in fact, in an
election cycle.
The Republican Party could only be viable and formidable in the future through
German Conservatism. The values and principles of German Conservatism
should be integrated into the Republican Party platform to unite the conservative
base, appeal to “Moderates” and “Centrists,” and win the non-voting US voter
population. Those who affiliate and identify as “Democrat” out of “necessity”
would be attracted to the Republican Party with German Conservatism as part of
its platform, principles, and ideals. It would appeal to Right-leaning Greens,
Right-leaning Libertarians, conservatives who splintered off into the Conservative
Party, Right-leaning Natural Law Party affiliates, and the American Constitution
Party. Voters and voting-age adults would feel more comfortable, identifying and
affiliating with the Republican Party and coming off of the sidelines to vote.

The republican party german conservatism

  • 1. The New Path Forward for the Republican Party: German Conservatism Andrew Langford (BA, Political Science) August 9, 2017 Introduction: The 2016 Presidential Election yet once again showed how divided the United States is. It showed how fragile the Republican Party is as it remains splintered between the Progressive-Liberal wing, the self-proclaimed “Moderates” and “Centrists,” libertarianism, the so-called “Alt Right,” and a deeply divided conservative wing. The Progressive-Liberal Republicans claim to be conservative as they collaborate with the Democrats to push for more government, higher taxes, and more spending, deficits, and debt, claiming to be “bipartisan.” The “Moderates” and “Centrists” are satisfied with how things are and want to keep the status quo. Libertarian Republicans want to have a free market, based on laissez-faire economics, and generally take a libertine view on religion, morality, and social issues. The “Alt Right” is a splinter group without principle and with a view of history and human development as evolutionary. We could probably split conservatism into three main groups between fiscal/market conservatism, national defense/foreign policy neo-conservatism, and moral/traditional social conservatism. Donald Trump managed to win the Republican Presidential Nomination in 2016, averaging about 40% of the Republican Caucus/Primary vote, in a campaign where 65% of Republicans polled wanted anybody besides Trump. Republicans like Jeb Bush, Chris Christie, Ben Carson, Mike Huckabee, and Rick Santorum eventually dropped out when they did not win very many votes in Iowa, New Hampshire, and South Carolina. Marco Rubio failed to win his home State of Florida, and only managed to win the Minnesota Caucuses and Washington, DC and split the conservative vote with Ted Cruz. John Kasich was his strongest in the Northeast and Midwest, managing only to win his home State of Ohio. Ted Cruz won the Iowa Caucuses by a narrow margin over Donald Trump, lost the South to Donald Trump, and did his best in the West where he won his home State of Texas and won Kansas, Oklahoma, Utah, Alaska, Wyoming, Idaho, and the Colorado delegation in the first round of voting, also managing to win the Maine Caucus and Wisconsin Primary. Polls predicted Hillary Clinton would sail to victory in November. The popular vote margin was extremely close as Donald Trump swept the South and the West and won Pennsylvania, Florida, Ohio, Indiana, Michigan, and Wisconsin. Voter turnout hardly reaches 50% in US elections in these modern times. Most eligible voters and voting age adults feel alienated. They feel their votes do not count and do not matter and would not make a difference in elections. Millions live and grow up in cities in dire poverty and in a state of perpetual dependence
  • 2. on the government dole without any hope of a good education and a belief their future will be as bad or worse. The “mentally ill,” “psychopaths,” and “social outcasts” get segregated and isolated from society and popular culture. Suicide is on the rise in the United States with new forms of bullying and abuse through social media and cyber bullying. A majority of jobs are predicted to be taken over by automated technology, artificial intelligence, and robots in an effort to be “cost efficient” and “save” on money and resources, leaving more than half of the national population without work and being without the necessary resources to survive and without the necessary skills, abilities, and education for what few jobs there are left. The government does little to address these issues. Politicians among both Democrats and Republicans seek to advance their own interests, special interests who support them, and their specific constituencies and/or favored groups of people over the national interest. Leaders and members of the Republican Party theorize as to why they lost after every election they lose. The Progressive-Liberal Republicans claim it is because the Republican Party needs to move Left closer to the Democrat Party. The “Moderates” and “Centrists” claim the Republican Party needs to “moderate” itself and move closer to the “Center.” Libertarian Republicans believe the Party needs to campaign on “limited government,” “capitalism,” and a “live-and-let-live” mentality. Progressive-Liberal Republicans, “Moderates,” “Centrists,” Libertarian Republicans, and even fiscal/market conservatives and neo-conservatives call for a unilateral “truce” on social issues in elections and mute religion and morality. The conservatives claim the Republican Party should move further Right. I believe these solutions are misguided in many ways. I recommend the way forward is a different perspective and a new paradigm. I believe the way forward for the Republican Party is with German Conservatism. I will explain the fundamentals of German Conservatism in this piece and how and why it is the only option for the Republican Party. The Values of German Conservatism: It is important to mention first of all German Conservatism is not foreign to the United States. It is not foreign to the Republican Party. I am not talking about Germany when I talk about German Conservatism. Germany is less German today than it was 72 years ago. Germany is more liberal today than it is conservative. I am talking about Germans inside and outside of Germany. I am talking about the German World where Germans migrated, settled, and built communities. The United States constitutes part of the German World in Pennsylvania, the Midwest, and other areas where German communities spot the map. This section will focus on the values of German Conservatism, four in all.
  • 3. Family: The family is the most basic unit of society. It is the beginning of every civilization. Family begins with marriage between a man and a woman for life. Children should be raised in a home by and with a mother and a father. Marriage and family are bound together in love, unity, and compassion. Villages, communities, society, civilization, race, ethnicity, culture, kin, and nationality are made up of families. Many children live and grow up in less-than-ideal family settings today in the United States and other modern societies. Many marriages end in divorce because of infidelity, abuse, and other related reasons. Families are torn apart and divided by divorce. Children lose in the divorce proceedings as the parents fight in court for custody over the children, and the children are split between both parents. Children who are born out of wedlock are increasingly more common in modern civilization today. Millions upon millions of human babies die of abortion because of unwanted pregnancies or because the man who got the woman pregnant does not want the child and wants the woman to have an abortion. If the family suffers, society and civilization suffer. If marriage between man and woman declines, humanity degenerates and falls. If family life and homes are broken with poverty and abuse, individuals are likely to continue in lifelong misery and fear, perpetual poverty, and a possible continuation of the cycle of codependence and abuse. It is the responsibility of government and the top priority of politicians to protect and advance family necessities and interests in a way it would advance humanity and civilization in the generations to come. Equality: We had much debate and confusion about equality over the Centuries since the Enlightenment. Liberal equality came to mean having all material things, tangible possessions, ability, faculties, and mental capacity equal among all. It is defined as roughly equal amount of income among all, equal income level, wealth distribution as level as it is possible, same home, quality health coverage for all, equal access to quality education, and equal access to full employment. It is a nice utopian dream. But, who will provide for all of this? There is the problem. Equality is defined by German Conservatism as equal rights among the citizens. It is equal treatment before the law. The privileges of citizenship are the same among all citizens and will be afforded to all who become citizens. The law equally protects every citizen of every background, no matter where they live. Everybody would have their due justice before the law. The equality of German Conservatism is equality before God and the law.
  • 4. Liberty: Here is another controversial topic in the United States today. It is at the heart of the political debate at every level. Liberals define property as positive freedom, the freedom to do certain things and what the philosopher, Joel Feinberg, defined as “manifesto rights.” Libertarians define liberty as strictly negative freedom, the freedom from. Too many conservatives and many Republicans loosely throw the term, liberty around without any idea, or at least giving a vague definition of what liberty is and means to them. Liberty is a common value in the United States with various definitions among various demographics, political parties, and interests. Liberty is defined by German Conservatism as being free from government interference and foreign powers, seeking to extend its borders beyond its boundaries and create either an overland empire or an overseas empire. It is liberty from mob rule, violence, civil war, anarchy, and instability. German Conservatism is a right to your life, liberty, and property. It is the right to the pursuit of one’s own happiness. What we commonly call “human rights” are derived from humanity and given from one human-being to another as part of a political plan and agenda and could be taken and/or transferred to another. German liberty, or liberty as it is defined by German Conservatism, is God-given and divinely inspired. It cannot be constitutionally take by government and society and not be in violation of Natural Law. Individuality: Individuality is not the same as individualism. These two similar words with “individual” as the root word do not mean the same thing. Individualism is a political philosophy with its emphasis on the individual as the supreme good. Individuality is defined as the qualities an individual is characterized by and what distinguishes that individual from others; their separate, distinct existence. The liberals take a hybrid view of individualism where individuals are free to decide right and wrong, good and evil, and moral and immoral for themselves. They promote and push “political correctness” to “protect minorities” and “multiculturalism” to “promote diversity.” They see government as a benevolent institution to “liberate” people and “create an environment” where everybody could succeed, thrive, and flourish. The Marxists take it further with individualism with promoting a “classless society” by creating a temporary “proletariat dictatorship” and making everything common among all as they turn civilizations into collectivizations. Libertarians and many conservatives believe in what Herbert Hoover called “rugged individualism.” It is the myth of the “self-made man.” It is the belief the government only exists to “secure our rights.” Government, society, and civilization is believed to be “a means to serve the ends of the individual.” It is a twisted view of personal responsibility where what you do is pretty much up to you because it is your “liberty,” your “right” to do what you want. Their belief is,
  • 5. “You do what you want. It is your life.” As it is typical of libertarians and conservatives like Tom Tancredo, they take the attitude of “Who’s the ‘Nanny State’ to tell you what you can and cannot do?” Politicians, political parties, bureaucrats, the media, the market, and academia talk people of people as being part of a race, a culture, an ethnicity, a religion, an age group, a number, a statistic, data information, and a demographic. There are not any individuals in modern civilization. There are only peoples. There are only masses and a collective. The Democrat Party targets voting blocks and minority voter demographics in elections instead of all voters individually one at a time. Unfortunately the Republican Party falls into the same practice of targeting certain voter groups as opposed to all voter demographics as a whole. Individuality is unique to every individual. It is the differences and distinctions between individuals, obvious or not obvious. Every individual has and possesses something that’s part of them, something inside of them, making them who they are and making them unlike others. Every individual is not, cannot, and would not be somebody else. They are not, cannot, and would not be somebody who they are not. They should not attempt to be somebody else. Individuals should not attempt to be somebody who they are not. True diversity is authenticity and in being who you are and who you were meant and created to be. I should dispel another common myth around the United States. It is the myth of the “frontier” and the “Wild West.” The belief goes by a script like a man or a woman leaves the comforts of the cities in the East to journey out to the West “beyond the reaches of civilization” to make a name for themselves, create a new life and a new home where they live for the rest of their lives as hermits, and become a “new man” or a “new woman.” There is a problem with this mentality. This myth assumes and presupposes the belief we live in a State of Nature in the absence of law, government, and authority. It is the idea everybody is out for themselves and responsible for their own survival and success. It is one’s will and strength pitted against the will and strength of another. The myth of the “Wild West” and “rugged individualism” created the mentality of the necessity to “adapt to the times” and the idea of “survival of the fittest.” Individuality is not every man, woman, and child out for him/herself. It is every individual as part of a whole in comparison to every part of the body functioning as part of the whole. If one individual malfunctions and underperforms, it undercuts the community and undermines all of humanity. Every individual contributes a portion to the whole. Every portion of that whole is a vital portion and essential. Some view God as a watchmaker who left the Universe to operate on its own after Creation. But, every mechanical clock and every mechanical watch needs to be maintained and kept properly functioning.
  • 6. High Principles of German Conservatism: Mahatma Gandhi once wrote one of the seven deadly sins is “politics without principle.” US politics turned poisonous, divisive, and vile. It is without principle. We went from prizing character in politics and government to descending to the depths of dividing along ideological lines, political party affiliation, and supporting and voting for politicians and candidates who smear each other and their opponents. Unfortunately, too many Americans engage in these vicious practices inside and outside of politics. Liberals base their politics on creating “victims” who they see as their duty to “protect” and “empower,” devising “programs” and “entitlements” to “level the playing field” and viciously and mercilessly attack those who disagree with them and their agenda as mean, cold, cruel, selfish, stingy, heartless, insensitive, racist, sexist, xenophobic, homophobic, transphobic, and/or intolerant. Libertarians see politics as “free for all,” “first come first serve,” and based on the ideas of Social Darwinism and Evolution. Conservatives too often swing back and forth between a carbon copy of liberalism and a carbon copy of libertarianism. This section will be focused on the high principles of German Conservatism. I identified five principles I will write about in this section. Honor: We live in a world today where many feel they do not have anything to contribute and just seem to waste space that would be suited better for somebody else or something more important. Many do not vote in democracies and republics around the world, feeling and believing their vote and voice do not matter and do not make a difference. Many yet turn to big central bureaucratic government and powerful global and regional institutions to solve their problems, take care of them, and provide for them. They seem to have little to live for anyways. So, that’s the general attitude among many, as their voices and concerns are drowned out in the mass media and social media where it is usually twisted, doctored up, and transmitted to the world. One of the values of German Conservatism I wrote about earlier is individuality. Every individual contributes to humanity as every spring and gadget contributes to the function of a mechanical clock and a mechanical watch. Honor is defined by German Conservatism as the internal worth and value of an individual. It is about contribution. Everybody has a place in the family, community, culture, kin, and nation in the German World. Every individual contributes to the whole of humanity. We live in a superhero culture today with a mentality of social justice and collective salvation. Many look to heroes like Spiderman, Superman, Batman, Iron Man, and the Avengers as role models. Kids, teenagers, and young adults especially get into the practice of superhero worship and aspiring to have “super powers” and “save the world” and humanity from itself. German Conservatism is more concerned with individuals. It is not a mentality of groups and people as a collective. The view begins fro the bottom up with one individual
  • 7. at a time, not as a factory program. It starts with taking one at a time and working with them, not as a production assembly line. German Conservatism is about individuals working with individuals one-on-one, mentoring and empowering each to do the same for others one-by-one. It has a ripple effect on all who are directly affected and eventually on all of humanity. Duty: We cannot have rights without duty. We cannot have liberty without duty. Rights and liberty in the absence of duty is anarchy. It is the duty of every citizen to uphold and obey the law, vote in elections, and serve in the military when the situation demands it, exempting women from military service. Men have a responsibility to their wives and children. Women have a responsibility to their husbands and children. It is incumbent on the children to learn their duty to family, community, and nation. Loyalty: Every individual has various loyalties. They have loyalties to family, community, nation, humanity, and civilization. These loyalties extend to deity and religion for some. Husbands and wives pledge loyalty to each other in marriage. They are loyal to their children who in turn are loyal to them. Elected officials and the military pledge their loyalty to the Constitution when they take the Oath. Loyalty and duty are hallmarks of German Conservatism. Hospitality: Roman visitors who visited the Ancient Germanic Tribes in Northern Europe observed they were welcoming and hospitable to them and others who passed by. Tacitus wrote of the kindness and hospitality of the Germans in Germania. They welcomed strangers, visitors, and foreigners into their homes and communities. They shared what little they had and attended to the needs of their visitors before they left and continued on their journey or returned home. Hospitality and generosity were rare virtue at a time when politics and foreign policy was zero-sum game, one’s gain meant another’s loss, and everything was about trade, commerce, and the economy. Courage: Too many politicians today compromise values and principle for convenience and expediency. They cave before the opposition and compromise in what they call “working across the aisle” and being “bipartisan.” They betray the trust their constituents bestowed upon them and sell their souls to special interests. They return home to play to their party base to secure their respective party nominations for reelection and usually position themselves in the “Center” to win the “Moderate” voters in the hopes of winning reelection. They continue these
  • 8. practices before, during, and after elections. It is gesturing and being without substance. The German civilization originated in an area originally of dense forests and bogs with rivers bordering them in the East and West, the Alps in the South, and Denmark bordering on the North. The Roman Empire threatened German independence until AD 9. The Germans were threatened by the Vikings in the North and the Slavs in the East in the Middle Ages. Robbers and marauders threatened Medieval German towns, cities, and villages. The French constantly threatened the Germans from the West. The Germans could have easily given up, cowered, and buried their heads in the sand. But, they gathered, united in strength, and fiercely and courageously fought their enemies off. They formed local militias to defend and protect the people, their homes, and their livelihood. Fortresses and castles protected the German frontier. The Germans are defiant against all odds and take their stand against their enemies and adversaries. Orlog, Wyrd, and Hamingja: Humanity lost its significance today in modern society. People are degraded to the lives of pigs, cows, and chickens. Individuals are seen as commodities to be purchased, used, and exploited for the pleasure, benefit, and entertainment of others. They get cast aside and publicly ostracized or handed off to the next beneficiary after they fall out of use. People are extorted as money-making toys and objects to be pushed, shoved, and dumped after they were used up. The modern world views humanity as disposable and replaceable. It only holds instrumental value today. The civilization of today only views individuals as a means to an end. They are treated as animals who only seek material comforts, luxury, and entertainment. The worldview of Ancient Germanic Mythology offers an alternative to this mentality and worldview. Orlog: The Ancient Germans believed in the ultimate purpose, the great plan of Creation. Orlog was cause and effect. Every creation has a purpose. Every individual is important and significant. They have intrinsic worth and value in and of themselves, each and every one. They have a purpose beyond themselves. There was not, is not, and would not be any Evolution. Every individual was divinely created. They have a reason and a purpose for their existence. It is what Immanuel Kant called referred to as the “Principle of Humanity as an Ends.” It is what’s commonly referred to as individuality among many. Wyrd: The Ancient Germans believed in destiny and becoming. Many believe their destiny is determined by fate and chance. They claim their destiny was predetermined by astrology, their birthstone, and the month, day, and/or year
  • 9. they were born. We live in a celebrity culture with actors/actresses, rock stars, and other celebrities placed on pedestals, deified, and worshipped. Many look to them as their role models. Many blame their misfortunes on their signs and/or birthstones and credit their signs and/or birthstones for their fortunes. They compare themselves with their favorite celebrities, their favorite role models, and faulty standards created by society and the mass media. Wyrd is destiny as a personal journey of becoming. Individuals have the power to be and become what and who they want to be and become. It is their personal decision. It is a personal decision everybody will need to make. It does not matter what others say. Tests, assessments, and IQ cannot accurately tell you what and who you are and will be. Those decisions are personal and up to you. Hamingja: The Ancient Germans believed humanity is divine. Every German family was believed to have descended from deity. Hamingja was defined as family reputation. Every family had a reputation they were expected to hold and pass to the next generation. They view death in battle as good and as martyrdom. A warrior for deity was highly valued and virtuous in Ancient Germanic Mythology and Civilization. An assumption of Evolution is humanity evolved from apes. Evolution assumes humanity evolves. Social Darwinism assumes some humans are superior, and others are inferior. It is a master-and-slave view of “superior” individuals being “destined to rule” and the “inferior” individuals being “doomed to slavery” to their “superior masters” and being weeded out and dying off. Marxism takes the view of humanity as cattle to be controlled, manipulated, and corralled into “utopia.” Modernism treats individuals as numbers, statistics, mathematical figures, raw data, and trends. Humanity is viewed by modernism as insignificant in the end. Technocracy and globalism treat humanity as ignorant and too dumb to figure anything out. The worth of humanity is beyond use for trivial purposes, abuse, manipulation, a natural resource to be exhausted, and for the entertainment of others. Humanity naturally longs for and desires more than a telestial existence. Humans have the potential to be divine. They are the eternal offspring of Divinity. The worth of a human soul is in its divinity, perpetuity, and dignity. It is in their unique nature and their divine potential. They are spiritual beings in physical form on earth. They seek and long for a celestial experience in perfect form. St. Peter counseled the Saints in his Second General Epistle, “Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of God, and of Jesus our Lord,
  • 10. “According as His divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness. Through the knowledge of Him that hath called us to glory and virtue: “Whereby are given unto us exceedingly great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust. “And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue, and to virtue knowledge; “And to knowledge temperance, and to temperance patience, and to patience godliness; “And to godliness brotherly kindness, and to brotherly kindness charity. “For these things be in you, and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ” 2 Peter 1: 2-8). The Republican Party: The nature of US politics today makes it impossible to create consensus on anything. Political parties turned more ideological than they were in the past. The Democrat Party went from being a Moderate-to-Conservative political party to a Far Left Marxist political party. The Republican Party is ideologically and sectionally divided without any clear consensus on policy and principle. Minor political parties like the Greens, Socialists, Prohibition, Natural Law, the Conservative Party, Libertarians, and the American Constitution Party occasionally siphon disaffected Left-wing Democrats and Right-wing Republicans in elections, compounding the issue further. Candidates and politicians often emerge as “Independent” and siphon a fairly high proportion of the vote, enough either to swing the election one way or another or win the election themselves. The low voter turnout in elections shows yet another sign of the deep divisions in the United States and the disenchantment of a majority of the US voter population. Politicians and candidates make promises on the campaign trail to get elected and reelected. They devise and present plans to voters of what they plan to do if and/or when they are elected and reelected. They rarely keep the promises they made on the campaign trail, if ever at all. These politicians and candidates run into opposition and obstacles to putting their plans into force and often quickly and easily give up, or compromise and end up with something very different from what they want. It usually happens a newly elected President or a newly elected Governor wants one thing, and Congress or a State legislature wants another thing. There is a political impasse where the Executive and the Legislature compete to outmaneuver each other. Democratic Party candidates campaign on
  • 11. political, social, and economic grievances and promise to “do something” and “try anything.” Republican Party candidates typically campaign on tax cuts for the wealthy and middle class, spending cuts, build-up of the national defense and military, securing the border, job creation, the economy, and entitlement reform. Little is done to address the real issues, affecting real people across the United States. Ronald Reagan addressed the low voter turnout of Republican voters in 1974 at CPAC 1975 and explained they stayed home and did not vote because they felt there was not “a sufficient difference between the parties.” What Ronald Reagan observed in 1975 holds true today. But, I would go even further than that. It is among both Democrats and Republicans. It is among Third Party and unaffiliated voters who decide to not vote because US political parties, politicians, and candidates do not represent their true interests and seem to be deaf to their voices. They see political parties, politicians, and candidates beholden to Wall Street, Hollywood, Beltway, the corporate world, union bosses, political machines, the mass media, and academia. They see political parties, politicians, and candidates being bought off by big money and special interests. Many of he US voting population do not vote because they feel they are ignored and/or overlooked. The way forward for the Republican Party is with German Conservatism. Family should be a priority in politics and government again before anybody else and anything else. Natural Law and unalienable rights need to be important in politics, government, and elections again. Liberty should be redefined as God-given and divinely inspired, something government and society cannot take at will. The Republican Party needs to make individuality as part of its party platform. A recognition of every individual as being of intrinsic worth and value in and of themselves and each contributing to humanity and civilization needs to be part of the Republican Party. Duty needs to be part of our politics and government again as it is indispensible to independence and self-governance. Americans need to prioritize their loyalties and put God, family, and country first. We should be more hospitable to each other and others as citizens and be more civil. Courage is a vital part to our personal lives and our national politics. Every individual is important to our nation. We have a personal destiny to do what we want to do in life and become what and who we want to be. We were divinely created and have the potential to be divine. We need to restore principle to politics as citizens of the United States. Conclusion: Republican Party leaders and activists got many things wrong. Progressivism and liberalism harms the Republican Party and taints its credibility. Libertarianism is reactionary and learns in the direction of anarchy. Internationalism and nation- building harmed our reputation and image as a nation across the world. Talk of
  • 12. tax cuts, balanced budgets, the economy, inflation and interest rates, and job creation has little national appeal. Strict focus on social issues and traditional principles is of little help to the Republican Party as well. “Reform Conservatism” sounds more like a campaign slogan. “Compassionate Conservatism” is actually aligned with Progressive-Liberalism and uncompassionate. The Alt-Right is the worst development in the Republican Party over less than a decade, in fact, in an election cycle. The Republican Party could only be viable and formidable in the future through German Conservatism. The values and principles of German Conservatism should be integrated into the Republican Party platform to unite the conservative base, appeal to “Moderates” and “Centrists,” and win the non-voting US voter population. Those who affiliate and identify as “Democrat” out of “necessity” would be attracted to the Republican Party with German Conservatism as part of its platform, principles, and ideals. It would appeal to Right-leaning Greens, Right-leaning Libertarians, conservatives who splintered off into the Conservative Party, Right-leaning Natural Law Party affiliates, and the American Constitution Party. Voters and voting-age adults would feel more comfortable, identifying and affiliating with the Republican Party and coming off of the sidelines to vote.
