This document discusses the benefits of Lean Six Sigma knowledge for ISO auditors and organizations maintaining a quality management system. It explains how Lean Six Sigma aligns with ISO9001:2015 and the quality management principles from ISO9000 by providing tools to help address requirements like customer focus, corrective action, process improvement, and risk-based thinking. Mastering Lean Six Sigma techniques can help auditors and organizations drive excellence in quality management and achieve measurable business efficiency gains.

Quality Management Principles
• More Information and Contact Details
• Note the use of the following acronyms:
• QMS – Quality Management System
• ISO – ISO9001:2015
• QMPs – Quality Management Systems as described in ISO9000:2015
• LSS – Lean Six Sigma
3. 3
Benefits of LSS Knowledge to ISO Auditors & Implementers
• Go beyond understanding ‘what’ ISO requires and learn ‘how’ a variety of quality
improvement techniques can be used to:
• Help address ISO’s needs & demonstrate its requirements are being met
• Directly benefit the performance of the organisation and its processes
• Develop potentially new competences & become certified as a business improvement
professional (as well as an audit professional)
• Lead the delivery of measurable business efficiency gains, incorporating new and improved
processes in to your organisations QMS
4. 4
Benefits of LSS Knowledge to Organisations Maintaining a QMS
• The ability to drive and better align improvements to processes and the QMS holistically
• The opportunity, compliance permitting, to undertake all improvement and quality
management activities, through a single internal team.
5. 5
Alignment Between LSS Knowledge, the ISO Standard & QMPs
• One of the 7 QMPs is Customer Focus which ISO requires top management to
demonstrate a commitment to – LSS drives customer focus and teaches a number of tools
to help, e.g., Kano analysis, drill down, quality function deployment.
• Non-Conformity and Corrective Action – ISO requires that non-conformities are
suitably addressed, which aligns to the QMP of Improvement - LSS can provide a
structure for problem solving & continual improvement and teaches key tools that can
help, e.g., Pareto, 5 whys, fishbone diagrams.
6. 6
Alignment Between LSS Knowledge, the ISO Standard & QMPs
• In order to help maximise effectiveness & efficiency in achieving objectives ISO promotes
the QMP of using a Process Approach - LSS is a process improvement methodology
teaching tools & techniques to reach the same goals, e.g., process mapping, error
proofing, capability analysis.
• ISO suggests using PDCA – Lean methods are often based on the use of PDCA (‘Shewhart
Cycle’) providing tools for each stage, e.g., visual management, value stream mapping,
graphical techniques.
7. 7
Alignment Between LSS Knowledge, the ISO Standard & QMPs
• ISO requires Performance Evaluation, a key input to the QMP of Evidence-Based
Decision Making – LSS teaches best practice monitoring, measurement, analysis &
evaluation of process performance using a wide array of techniques, e.g., measurement
systems analysis, yield calculations, statistical process control.
• Risk Based Thinking is implicit to ISO & to conform to the standard an organisation
needs 'to plan and implement actions to address risks and opportunities' – LSS provides
tools to analyse & address the positive & negative effects of uncertainty, as well as for
capitalising on opportunities, e.g., failure mode & effects analysis, error proofing, fault tree
analysis, concept selection tools.
8. 8
Alignment Between LSS Knowledge, the ISO Standard & QMPs
• Determining and selecting opportunities for Improvement, which is a QMP, and then
implementing actions to meet / enhance performance for customers is mandatory for ISO
– LSS is an improvement framework that teaches you how to do this.
• ISO requires the QMP of Leadership, and commitment with respect to the organisations
QMS – LSS, when undertaken correctly, drives leadership accountability for quality &
improvement through a management structure of Executive Champions & Sponsors.

More Information and Contact Details
• The previous items are by no means a comprehensive list in terms of where the 'body of
knowledge' that is LSS aligns with ISO & the QMPs
• The associations mentioned, however, suggest that being trained in LSS techniques could
easily help support the development & maintenance of a QMS….
…..that is assuming you want a QMS that produces a step change in performance.
