Internet Censorship

Internet censorship is a deliberate control of information by limiting public viewership.
This is often done by the government institutions that aims to control contents that pertain to
copyright, sensitive information, or harmful to the public, control internet related crime or to
monitor the internet users. There is an inherent attempt by the Chinese government to control the
flow of information. It affects both viewership and publishing of online materials and as a result
the press do not have freedom to express themselves freely. The Chinese internet censorship is
more compressive and more advanced. As provided by the government regulations, most of the
companies providing internet services are self-censored to align themselves with the law. This
essay aims at exploring how internet censorship is used in China and around the world.
There has been a lot of political protest that have emerged in the digital agora especially
among young people. The protest are witnessed in many countries like Mexico, China, Russia,
United States etc. Most of these government feel that the information shared in the internet has
potential threats to the functions of the government. The Chines government for instances, has
issued a series of laws to deal with the challenges of public political expression, e-activism, and
Surname 2
group mobilization. This is an attempt to stable the government after period of decentralization
caused by the internet governance. In these regard, the Chinese government implemented
Internet Information System Security Protection Policy. According to the Chinese government,
the use of Internet has empowered the Chinese, especially the young adult to express themselves
and politically protest the dictates of the government. Based on this assumption, the government
in China argues that there is a structural impact on young adults’ awareness to use internet for
political mobilization (Lu &Zhao 1). The structural threats from perceived internet users in
China can helps understand why the government has censored the use of internet. In China,
internet threat carries the possibility of intended and perceived threats. This explains why the
government censors internet use in China. In this regard, self-censorship is the major reasons
why internet censorship is encouraged in China to minimize the opportunities to participate in
the public affairs, citizens often delete their sensitive information or sensitive political post thus
killing the spread of rumors or kill the spread of the information and fostering a good
relationship between the authorities and citizens. The government censor the internet to clean up
or minimize radical critique of the policies and authorities from extending their perspective of
the sensitive subjects.
The use of online by the public to express their political thoughts especially by the young
adults has a significant impact in inspiring political awareness, political behavior and political
orientation. The degree of participation has improved despite a change in terms consumption
and political participations. Political expression has mediated the effects of social media on
political participation. Following the pervasive threats, the State Council are responsible in
shaping the concrete measures to curtail the spread of information. The measure are intended to
prevent the effect of cyber security. The laws and regulations are implemented in China other
Surname 3
countries like United State to check on issue of cyber security. Strict laws are enforced and
whoever breaks them risk jail terms. In minor occasion, the content are deleted and the account
are blocked. Nations such as Singapore effectively began to harness the flow of information for
national development and improvement. Government viewed internet content as a thing that is
related to nascent information. Today Singapore sensors on two levels, for commercial
enterprises and home, to different between the adults and the young. Contrary to other nations,
internet censorship in Singapore originated from the majority of the population to regulate
communication in the internet. The assumption of the public is that the increased internet access
in the nations will lead to encroachment of unregulated content from the West. In this regard,
Singaporean government focused on pornography which was majorly perceived to come from
the West (Ramesh 1).
Internet censorship in China as a resulted in negative impact on commerce as it used by
the government to create a very hostile environment for foreign companies. However, this has
affected the livelihood of some citizens and human right privileges (Liu 1). The commercial
sector especially for foreigners are forced to give up their vast market or work under acquiescing
censorship regime. For instance, the recent trade wars between China and Google highlights
some of the pervasive censorship measures that the Chinese government is using to control the
market and curtail foreign influence in their market. Sadly, the Chines counterpart have remained
fee of the strict censorship measures that are laid on the market. The inability to continue
operations in China by the foreign companies is an indication that the internet censorship in
China’s tool to burden business climate for foreigners which is intentionally done to discourage
foreign investments (Cannici 3). Despite being the world’s most populated internet users, the
regime through its censorship regulations has created an environment where foreigners do not
Surname 4
survive. In response, the Chinese government argues that free internet without censorship is a
loophole for citizens to expose personal information, can enable citizens to expose corruption
among official, organize protest and oppose government policies. Previously, when there was no
censorship, corrupt government officials were fired, fined or jailed because the internet users
exposed them in the internet. The information controlling regime in China manipulates internet
information and suppress public dissent especially those that are deemed to be targeting the
government authorities. In this way, the China government hoped to prevent widespread
organized protest and reform movement
China’s internet censorship is put on the state in a paternal position. Compared with the
west on censorship, the Chines perspective on censorship is meant to protect the character of
freedom restriction and protect mechanism for the public. This is relatively neutral position of
censorship according to the public perception despite China having a more strict measures on
flow of information. Same as other parts of the World, the government bodies are responsible for
the censorship issues. Most nations use internet bubbles to censor information. In China,
censorship is done through content control of online news, surveillance of internet users, search
engines as crucial tools of censoring content, control of surfing habits, delete of entire websites
and selective filtering practices like TCO/IP keyword filtering (Faust 4). Other methods include
DNS spoofing, IP addresses, URLs filtration, resettling connections, and packet inspections. The
use of internet censorship in china is very comprehensive and complicated compared to other
nations in the world. The authorities have blocked content and monitor every activities done in
the internet. Major internet platforms, as required by the government establish elaborate self-
censorship mechanism. A report showed that in 2019, there were more than sixty restriction in
the Chinese internet websites which were created by the government and enforced by the
Surname 5
provincial branches. For companies, artificial intelligence algorithms are used to automatically
removed content that can jeopardize their relationship with the government regulations.
China and other states have managed to censor information flowing in the internet. The
main reasons is control sensitive information or content that interfere with the government
policies and norms of the nations. In China, any political dissent or criticism of the authority is
punished because that is considered a breakage of the law. Just like Chinas, other nations have
developed filters which monitor information and internet traffic within their borders. These
restrictive measures have been considered has jeopardizing human right and curtailing foreign
trade.
