Andrea Tomaselli
Artist - Designer - Gnomonist - Project Manager
Andrea, over the past 30 years, has been involved in many solo and collaborative private and public
art projects in Europe, Australia and the People’s Republic of China, this include sundials, murals,
sculptures, 3D installations, furniture and accessories.
The installation of Solar Clocks in many forms and using various mediums is the main focus of his
professional art practice.
As site related artwork, a Sundial includes the study of their history and evolution, philosophy and
the various techniques together with keen sense of spatial issues and social/cultural environment of
the site.
A sundial is a timepiece that uses the sun to tell the solar time through the shadow that a Gnomon
(rod or sculpture) casts on a design of lines and symbols painted or sculpted, in various size and me-
diums.
After graduation in 1985 was employed as structural and architectural designer in a project team for
the DelFavero Building Company TRENTO (Italy) and he was involved in many national and Interna-
tional building/design projects and tenders in Europe, Africa and in the Middle East.
In 1990 following a strong artistic influence takes on a collaborative apprentice with the Laboratory of
Restoration E.Vinante in Trento (Italy) and later with Prof. G.Omezzolli Arco (Italy).
The outcome was a work/study training in the restorations of ancient frescos, sculptures and oil
paintings followed by his private practice and the valuable experiences in collaborative projects with
other muralists, sculptors, visual and multimedia artists.
In 1994 he came to Australia continuing to expand his artistic professional development through the
design and manufacturing of custom made private and public furniture, features, 3D installations and
sculptures whilst introducing and developing the use of contemporary sundials in Australia.
Since then has acquired a large network of contacts and an intricate knowledge of processes, materi-
als and methods, this include design, painting, metalwork, woodwork, model making, mould casting
and kiln forming in different mediums.
Since 2000 the Andrea has been in contact with RMIT International Public Art unit, through study he
completed the Diploma and Certificate of Art in Public Space and after the direct involvement in vari-
ous project related to Solaris and Piazza Italia e completed the Master of Art in Public Space.
Currently Andrea develops solo and collaborative Art projects to further enhance skills related to
Project management with direct involvement in the development of design and manufacturing of Art-
works in various mediums for private clients, Communities, Schools, associations, and local govern-
ments.

14. Shadows, our time
There is a silent movement that we encounter many times
in our everyday life, shadows.
This movement represent the passing of time, the passing
of seasons… our life, the journey of the earth around the
Sun and therefore from the Melbourne laneways to all the
different parts of the world.
To use the ancient solar clock, the Sundial, in a contempo-
rary installation, as a unifying symbol of present, past and
future, is to accept a special relationship with nature, our
social and private environment, and time in it’s primary
form.
The concept is relatively simple, the shadow of the GNO-
MOS (object which indicates with it’s shadow the time), in
the Sun, moves during the day on a series of hourly lines
marked by a numbers or symbols related to particular daily
hours, the zodiac or the seasons.
The Gnomos ( a glass sphere with metal shadow casting
inserts ) will be installed in the middle of Celestial Avenue,
the hourly lines will be painted on the horizontal area of the
lane and on the walls in particular positions.

16. Travancore Reserve - Essendon
The Essendon Community Gardens are the current social
and economic connection to
the former primary use of the land nearby the water stream.
A sundial will be the central intervention in this second site,
made of 12 mm steel plate and filled with colored textured
concrete it
symbolizes time passing, the seasons and
cycles of life within the landscape's layers
of history.
Boeing Reserve - Essendon
This is the last site proposed and the natural end of the
intervention given its connection with nature.
The proximity of Essendon Airport and the view of the Rail-
way Bridge have symbolic
links within the creek.
Travel and communication, traditionally a key uses of rivers
or water in general give rise to exploration and exchanges
between different cultures stimulating different modes of
communication.
Debneys Park - Flemington
The location of Debneys Park is the starting point of our pro-
posed intervention with it's
urban and technological environment manifest as a human
created filter at the
gateway of the city.
A steel sculpture made of 12 mm steel plate rolled, sculpted
and plasma cut will resemble the flow of water within this
urban landscape.
EOI - Moonee Ponds Creek
Conceptually, the work creates a visual and thematic link
along the creek through its
integration into the landscape and its
environmental context.
The emblematic essence of the totemic theme is expressed
in a new horizontal
context contrasting with the traditional
verticality of the totem. Its marking nature
is manifest in the location of the works at
entrance points.
There are 3 selected sites that the artist will be working
within, however these sites will also be connected by
smaller components creating a link between them.

18. Rotary Clock Williamstown
The design approach is one which draws on the local charac-
ter of
Williamstown as an historical port and a modern working
maritime centre.
The planned design will incorporate artistic sculptural ele-
ments and symbols which draw on maritime themes and
structures and photographic images to further represent the
working seaport.
More subtle reference will be made to timekeeping in an
historical and maritime context. This in the form of physical
referencing of Timeball tower and an element including solar
timekeeping.

20. GREVILLE ST. ART SEATS
“ The Chapels”
Proposal
The concept behind my design proposal is “ to create
within the art seats a series of intimate spaces ap-
proachable by the public from any direction “.
People walking through Greville Street will appreciate the
seating for its sculptural quality whilst also feeling relaxed
enough to engage with them in a useful way.
An important factor, in the criteria used to prepare this con-
ceptual proposal, was durability and low maintenance.
A functional integration of sculptured stainless steel, which
incorporates engraved inscriptions or words, in a stylish
and ergonomic layout is the primary structure for the art
seats.
The subtle use of recycled timber for the seating is just
opposed against the hard edge stainless steel and relates,
in it’s design and forms as a symbolic recognition of the
precinct evolution.

30. Heathdale Glen Orden Wetlands
My vision , responding as an artist to the site, the Heath-
dale Glen Orden Wetlands and the project brief for the
Major Commission 2003-04, is to create a sculptural art-
work, a meeting point, visible from the major entrances,
community facilities and areas of interest.
The sculpture, as seen on the images attached, is a
sphere,
The sphere is emerging from a slightly elevated position
compared to the surrounding, the sense of bonding and
connection with the environment is created in a gradual
and lightly landscaped series of pathways ( native plants,
medium size rocks, sand and top soil).
The lower part of the sphere is cast in the concrete plinth
which identify and encourage access inside the artwork.
The sculpture has a few interactive functions and mean-
ings , it is a sundial, it has sound, echoes, and it is a shelter
provides seating and a story to tell through the designs.
The final layout and the landscape plan will be the evi-
dence of community input/dialog with myself and the se-
lected project team throughout the project.

34. Solaris - Piazza Italia@ARGYLE Square
Design concept
Premise the Central paved quadrangle framed by green
elements of golden elms, the design of the square revolve
around a central fulcrum, the well.
The Italian and Australian Porphyry ( Quarry face cobble-
stones ) are laid together forming designing spirals,
twirled shapes which weave and unite into its centre.
Overall the design seeks a symmetric balance and offers to
the visitor an harmonic and peaceful sense of welcome
through the equilibrium of the curves and lines creating a
natural flow (People).
The cover of the Well is the core of the square, a bronze
sculpted grid, in which design and text are moulded, en-
graved, cut-in and etched to introduce the sundial and es-
tablish the reading of the piazzas layout .
The hourly lines emerging towards the southern side of the
square from the centre are metal inlays, Stainless Steel
adjoined with linear porphyry elements, that outline the
sundial.
The visitor standing in designated ( marked ) position, in
the centre, is reading the time through the shadow cast by
his/her silhouette and the hourly lines, our present time.
Opposite, on the northern side, the lines, are inlays in
Cor-ten Steel, they are representing past and future, our
individual and social history.
Through a series of symbols, text and other visual refer-
ences embedded in bronze cobblestones, laser cut cobble-
stones,
Geographically is a metaphor for the two hemispheres,
north and south their union, the need to seek and engage
with each other.
The design of the central part of the piazza is embellished,
designed, telling a story, yet maintaining its simple but rich
palette of colours and unique classical look.
The outer rectangle, il passaggio, the circular passage,
subtly frames, with the design of continuos arcs, the square
adding depth and a sense of place,?? almost another di-
mension to the overall visual impact.
The pattern of continuous arcs links visually with the archi-
tecture of many ancient civilizations however a natural
pattern, a series of infinite layers of square quarry face
cobblestone reclaims harmony with the surrounding envi-
ronment, uniformity of Golden elms, clean linear paths, the
steps heading towards Lygon Street and the pergola on the
other end.

in texture and finishes, the manufacturing process of
metal products.

the polished finish of stainless steel stripes and the
square shapes in different colours ( essentially the
primary colours of welding ) are united in a earthy

This is an artist generated project involving 6 Victorian
artists and designers, and 3 Italian artists, working towards
a collaborative artwork celebrating the cultural contribution
of the Italian Trentino community in Victoria/Australia.
Their migration stories are representative of all those who
relocated to make Victoria their adopted home. This pro-
ject launches an ongoing program of events and ex-
changes between Victoria & Italy, commencing in the
Trentino Region, and including a series of public artworks
and exhibitions in both locations.

40. Wings
“The Wings of the Waa Mojety (Crow) from the Wurundjeri,
native custodians, of the land of the precinct, is the center of
the Sculpture .
I see the overall form of the sculpture as an interpretation of
music. The first sound.. drumbeat was a primordial form of
social art and cultural challenge.
The various symbols and elements represent different edu-
cational and social art forms. They are united in a vortex, a
spiral that absorbs, assimilates but at the same time projects
thoughts, ideas,exchanges and interaction”
The concept for the proposal is based on two steel sculptures
that emerging from the garden, with a curved shape, connect
with the two walls.
Trajectories of bombshells a pathway, symbol of war, historic
past and present ( Simpson Army Barracks ) for the area in
which the library is providing the service.
In the areas where the Sculptures are connected with the
walls the steelwork will have symbols and elements cut, in-
serted and sculpted.
The elements and symbols of the steelwork in the fore-
ground are designed and united with the painting on the walls
as an explosion, a spiral that absorbs and assimilates but in
the same time projects the sense of community around all the
different activities that will take place in the Library and the
Community Room.
The images proposed are showing an example/idea of the
dimensions and final impression of the two sculptures on the
building and it’s surrounding.
The shape of the sculptures emerging from the front garden
coming from the roundabout on Ibbottson St. are indicative,
there will be a study on a shape that for public safety will be
approachable from any direction.
In relation of the durability and maintanance of the artwork
the materials used are Steel with a powdercoating finish and
the paint ( see Document B ) is as well durable.
For at least 20 years the sculptures and the paint will not
need to be restored.
In conclusion, only the study in detail of the design, in accor-
dance with the Project Team in case of a positive response to
the present Tender, will decide the final shape and dimen-
sions of the sculptures.

46. Dandenong Market Public Artwork
“Rather than presenting solutions over-
whelmed on the ground by the dynamics of
the market, we are proposing strong sus-
pended elements visible to the essentially
pedestrian traffic, yielding a vital naviga-
tion reference, marking the area below,
offering meeting points……and maintaining
a constant presence.
In non-market times, these art works will
offer a key sense of theatre, inhabiting
and embellishing the spaces of the market,
to enhance its identity as a significant
community asset, and celebrating the exhi-
bition space it is. In this respect we have
been interested in the creation of meeting
places with high visibility and a different
ambience from the stalls and regular mar-
ket venues. The canopied pavilions are
designed to foster a sense of community.
Although they reflect upon Dandenong’s
early history as a market place, the works
as dynamic canopies, strange pavilions,

52. DANDENONG MEMORIAL PARK
My approach and response to the brief is based on the
concept of a design that identifies the link between place,
ritual and remembrance.
The notion of place translates to the central Spine Avenue
continuing on the paved design surrounding the artwork,
where rituals and ceremonies of remembrance are created.
It is very important to create for the visitor the linking ex-
pectation of a place (where) to gather.
A meaningful space becomes a place of identity (where) to
engage in for personal, special occasions or collective
social time.
The site embraces a transaction between the individ-
ual, the community and the space of memory.
It has to be a natural and instinctive intuition delivered by
use of colour, pattern and selected classic and durable
mediums.
My connection with Dandenong started when I first came to
Australia, I lived in Dandenong (my first English classes
with many new migrants, was at AEMS in Dandenong
South, and this experience was an eye opener on Australia
being a unique place) and my extended family has been
part of this community for many years.

54. The Yarra Valley BARCODE
We propose an integrated landscape treatment + art-
work: BARCODE- a sculpture, interpreting the charac-
ter of the region’s indigenous habitat
EARTH: Groundworks
Strategies: mounding with berms developed to our design,
to achieve a dynamic topography and circulation plan, lo-
cating the driving visitor in an inhabited landscape, in-
formed since the 19th
century, by additional settlement from
Europe and Asia, and later, from other continents. As such
the northern hemisphere interventionist tendencies and
conventions in the landscape are reconsidered and refer-
enced en route, from land clearing for agriculture, horticul-
ture, and viticulture, to develop a landscape which ac-
knowledges our location in the Antipodes, with the spe-
cifics of indigenous habitat, and a growing spirit of conser-
vation.
3D Installation work extending the introduced typologies
of fencing, walling and hedging, refreshed to account for a
contemporary understanding of history, and ecology, and to
elevate the reading of these utilitarian works as sculptural
elements and significant graphic traces mapping the land-
scape.

56. ENTRANCE - SCULPTURAL GATES
St.Kilda Botanical Gardens
From our site visits and considerations of the above, we
recognise the proposed Osborne Street gate represents
the primary entrance with its significant prospect through
Palm Walk to the Bay. Here the sweeping ‘colonnade’ of
palms emphasises verticality and deep perspective
In relation to the adjacent and dominant 19th century signa-
ture gates on the corner of Osborne and Gifford Streets, we
envisage the 21st century gate in Osborne Street would
benefit from a visual separation, ideally marked by a spatial
inset of some two metres, following the suggestions of the
existing stone edging. Designed to draw the visitor through
to the dominant feature of the Palm walk, this entrance
offers its own set of theatre.
The Proposed Commission for the Gates to St. Kilda Bo-
tanical Gardens is recognised as a design brief combining
multiple functions of the gateway element, contributing
PLACEMAKING attributes, and establishing an enhanced
public profile for the gardens, which acknowledges the
continuing heritage of the gardens. After 150 years, the
new commission stands to contribute significant new ele-
ments appropriate to our time, namely longevity, of charac-
ter, identity, material and functionality of the gates de-
signed.

58. WINGED - Sculptural Screens
Why do you want to be involved in this Artists in school
project?
My artistic professional practice has always been connected
with the site and the people that revolve around it. The pro-
posed land – art installation project provides an opportunity to
work in a creative environment with the excitement and en-
ergy of children. This is great motivation for me as an artist
and as a person.
Bringing cutting-edge art to the people… collaborative and
team building - social and emotional gains for the children
and sharing in a vision of connecting sustainable art practice
with this wonderful learning environment. All of these ele-
ments inspire me.
Where I live is where I can best use my knowledge to ex-
press my artistic view and Warburton primary is a perfect
environment where the energy and dedication is inspiring and
visionary.
How do you think this project will benefit the students
and the teachers?
This project has the capacity to involve many people of differ-
ent ages and abilities - like a woven rug has many threads
each unique and valuable to hold together and share our
lives.
Already, students, teachers and parents are involved in a
collective and collaborative process imagining this project.
While I will be working directly with Grade 5 and 6’s, the
school and the local community will be involved in the stages
of development – the organising, digging, hammering, twin-
ing, painting and celebration.
The sense of achievement, the learning, being creative, the
pride and self-esteem gained from experiencing the creative
and collaborative process is priceless. The project will affirm
what can be achieved by working together, overcoming ob-
stacles, seeing a project through to completion and creating a
living and sustainable piece of installation art. This is part of
Warburton’s tradition.
What are your expectations of:
The Students are the direct beneficiaries from the Project.
They will work collaboratively and receive instruction regard-
ing their role, participation, and purpose. We will work to-
gether and come to understand how art is part of everyday
life and how they can create art from anything.
The project, at different stages will involve smaller group
activities and large group participation.
Students will work on the project on many levels using and
sharing different skills:
They will search and source willow trees branches -
form/dimension/unique or standard attributes. Recycled me-
diums plastic/aluminium - colour/durability/environment -
composition/colour/dimensions.

60. ART and ROOTS - Overview
The Autonomous Province of Trento approved the proposal of the Trentino Club of Melbourne and has decided to send the
artist Paola DeManincor to Australia from Ma
rch to April 2009 to prepare the project and present this at the Convention of the Trentini in Australia (Melbourne 24 - 26
April).
Paola has interpreted and shared the history and life of Trentino migrants in Australia and in other part of the world as friend
and as an artist using her art and murals.
Whilst in Australia Paola DeManincor would like to engage and connect directly with young people with Trentino origins in a
series of art workshops coordinated by Andrea Tomaselli, the Trentino Club of Melbourne and other participant Trentino Clubs
(Sydney, Myrtleford, Wollongong and Canberra). At these workshops a series of painted panels will be created. These will be
then exhibited as a whole composition during the duration of the Conference in Melbourne. The panels will remain the prop-
erty of the workshop participants.
Key points for the participation at the workshops:
All young Australians of Trentino descendants are encouraged and invited to participate.
Each participant will be asked to bring to the workshop a simple design or subject. Research, unearth among the family mem-
oirs, books or internet, traditional and personal symbols of our families, towns, region and our valleys. (Amongst culture, art
and the history, objects/symbols can be found, utensils, flowers, mountains, buildings that can be represented and painted or
sculpted using various mediums)
The participants will engage in a creative and educational and interpretative process through art, history and Trentino tradi-
tions and symbols.
The participants will be asked to follow the techniques and suggestions of Paola DeManincor on how to best produce the out-
come of their research on the prepared panels using various mediums (Painting and mosaic using Silicate Keim Colors and
traditional Italian glass mosaic tiles).
Each participant will have, as a result of the workshop, a panel which will be exhibited with all other panels at the convention.
Workshops will take place in venues determined by the host Clubs in relation to attendance at the workshops. A venue should
be at least the size of a double garage 6x12 metres. In Melbourne we plan to organize 6 workshops in 3 venues (Launching
Place, Dandenong and Heidelberg). Other club workshops are envisaged in Sydney (this venue could include Wollongong) ,
Myrtleford (this venue could include Canberra). We are open to discuss different options.
Materials and Labour – Keim Colors, brushes, glues, glass mosaic and art supplies will be supplied by the Province of Trento.
Host clubs to organize Venue and logistic (Tables, Drop sheets, Chairs and other items to be discussed prior commencement
of workshops)
Please feel free to forward suggestions, options and any questions related to this project and do not hesitate to contact me
here in Melbourne.

62. SEEDS OF HOPES AND DREAMS
St.ALBANS
Seeds of Hopes and Dreams incorporates four permanent
public artworks across St Albans’ CBD. The artworks com-
bine sculpture, lighting, paving and seating elements to
celebrate the unique community of St Albans.
The artists have drawn upon the indigenous yam daisy and
other related plants as the central motifs of the project for
their universal symbolism of hopes and dreams. These
plants, migratory species that spread on the wind, are
strong symbols for a richly diverse community proudly built
on migration.
The plants have a long connection with humankind. They
have been traced throughout the ages as a food source
and celebrated for medicinal properties. Most poignantly,
the plants represent the aspirational realm of hopes and
dreams through the action of blowing the seed head to
make a wish.
Seeds of Hopes and Dreams is part of Brimbank City
Council’s vision and commitment to the revitalisation of its
Town Centres and the building of community connected-
ness within the municipality.
