2. INTRODUCTION:-
■ The Rana Plaza was a 8 storey building situated at Savar, Bangladesh, housing five
garment factories as well as a bank and a shopping mall.
■ OnApril 24, 2013, the building collapsed, killing 1,100 workers and injuring 2500 more.
■ Although a crack across the building was discovered, the workers were forced to work
under risk on the day of collapse of Rana Plaza. And the workers were threatened of
cutting their salary off if they were absent.
3. Issues in Structure:-
■ 2 additional floors were constructed without permission.
■ The building lacked supporting walls needed to hold heavy machines and generators
used by the factories
■ The lot where Rana plaza stood was formerly a pond which was filled only with sand.
■ Inferior building materials were used to construct Rana Plaza.
4. A day before destruction….
■ On 23rd April 2013, the cracks were developed in the building. For security, they called
an engineer for inspection of the building. He (engineer) claimed that the building is
unsafe and can be collapsed at any time.
■ But the owner of the building (Sohel Rana), threatened workers for cutting the salary
and asked them to come for work as one day off can cause him loss.
■ The owner assured that there is nothing to worry about.
5. On 24th April 2013….
■ Large power generators were placed on these upper floors of the building to supply
power to the garment factories. The foundation of the building was already of poor
quality, never designed to hold an additional two to three stories and large
machinery/generators.As soon as the generators came online the building collapsed.
