• 1. 'The' is used to refer to a definite article to show that the article is
specific:”The book is on the table”.
• 2. We can also use 'the' to refer to a certain member of a group. So if we
were describing someone in a crowd, we might say, "The girl on the right
is the tallest."
• 3. 'The' can be used with uncountable nouns in cases like; "She jumped
into the water."
• 4. You can also use 'the' when referring to places, however there are some
rules to keep in mind. You can use 'the' to refer to:
• Names of rivers, oceans or seas; for example, "the Indian Ocean"
• Points in the world such as; “the Equator”
• Geographical areas such as; “the Middle East”
• Deserts, forests, gulfs and peninsulas such as; “the New Forest”.
