3. INTRODUCTION
• Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is a neurosurgical
procedure involving the implantation of
medical device called a Brain pacemaker.
• DBS sends electric impulses ,through implanted
electrodes ,to specific targets in the brain
which needs to be stimulated.
• DBS is not a cure, can stop the disease from
progressing, and even reverse it.
4. f
• Electrical probe implanted in brain
• Approved by FDA in mid 1990’s
• Hidden under skin (Differs depending
upon disorder being treated)
• Does not damage healthy tissue
• Improves motor function
5. DBS IN SELECTED BRAIN REGION FOR
TREATMENT OF-
• MOVEMENT AND NEUROPSYCHIATRIC
DISORDERS LIKE-
Parkinson’s disease.
Essential tremor.
Dystonia.
Chronic pain .
Major Depression.
Obsessive-compulsive disorder.
6. DEEP BRAIN STIMULATORS COMPONENT
Mainly consist of 3 component
• The Electrode-
Small tip shaped device.
Surface of electrode has 4 metal pads used to
transmit pulse of electricity.
Allows electrical stimulation to target only
brain (tissue) where electrodes are implanted.
7. THE-PULSE GENERATOR
• Also called as stimulator
• Small, box shaped
,generates electrical signals
sent to electrodes.
• Implanted under
skin(collar bone)
• It includes a battery (2to7
years)
• High frequencies gen (100
times/sec)
8. THE EXTENSION
• An insulated
cable carries
electric signal
from pulse
generator to
electrodes .
10. NEUROSURGICAL PROCEDURE
– Head frame is attached to skull
– Magnetic resonance imaging
(MRI) is done
– Burr hole is drilled in scalp
under local anaesthesia
– Electrode is inserted in brain .
– Implantable pulse generator
(IPG) is placed in collar bone .
– Connecting wire is attached .
11. ASLEEP DEEP BRAIN STIMUALATION
• Surgeries are performed with the patient
asleep.
AWAKE DEEP BRAIN STIMUALATION
• Surgeries are performed with the patient awake
12. BENEFITS
Reduction in dyskinesia
Suppression of medication-refractory tremor
Simplification of medication regimen
Reduction in medication dosage
Improvement in performance of activities of
daily living
Improvement in quality of life
No lesions
No destruction of the tissue
13. COMPLICATIONS
• RELATED TO THE SURGICAL PROCEDURE
Haemorrhage, ischemic lesions and
seizures
• ASSOCIATED WITH THE DEVICE
Electrode displacement, infection and
mechanical problems
• RELATED TO STIMULATION
Paraesthesia, muscle contraction, pain,
and abnormal eye movements, Worsening
dyskinesia
14. A NEUROSURGERY WITH GUITARIST !!!
• By neurosurgeon at
University of California at
Loss Angeles.
• Dated -10 JULY 2013
• & “stimulation helps to
restore a more normal
activity”
• To calm the tremors
associated with PD.
15. CONCLUSION
• Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is a
neurosurgical procedure.
• New hope for patients.
• Not a cure, can stop the disease from
progressing, and even reverse it.
