Chapter no.1
BACKGROUND OF THE ISSUE
“LIVEright LIVERight” is a Social Action Programme, designed to raise awareness and educate
people to control the spread of Hepatitis A,B and C.
There is a real need for action against these potentially life threatening diseases considering the
current situation of Pakistan. Pakistan carries one of the world’s highest burdens of chronic
hepatitis and mortality due to liver failure and hepatocellular carcinomas. In Pakistan more
people die of Hepatitis every day than terrorism in a year.
Approximately 1 in 12 persons worldwide or some, 500 million people are living with chronic
viral hepatitis. Knowledge is the best weapon against Hepatitis and people are not aware about
how hepatitis spreads and how to secure their lives. Pakistan has the 2nd
highest prevalence
rate of hepatitis C ranging from 4.5% to 8% and is responsible for 50–76% of all liver cancer
cases. The prevalence data estimated Hepatitis B at 3-5 % in Pakistan.
Key issues
1. Hepatitis A spreads by Contaminated Water and food: PCRWR after testing of different water
sources across 24 districts in the country found that over 80% of them provided water which
was unsafe for drinking. 250,000 children die each year in Pakistan as a result of water borne
illnesses which stem from drinking impure water. Hepatitis A is transmitted via food
contaminated by infected food-handlers, uncooked foods, or foods handled after cooking by
vendors and served in Low standard Restaurants.
2. Hepatitis B and C spreads by
 Reuse Of syringes: Overuse and unsafe injection practices cause 8 to 16 million
Hepatitis B virus infections and 2 to 5 million Hepatitis C virus infections every year.
 Unscreened Blood Transfusion: In apparently healthy blood donors, about 4% are
positive for Hepatitis "B" and 6% for Hepatitis "C".
 Street barbers, who often use the same blades or razor on many people.
 Use of unsterilized Dental and Medical devices
 Beauty tools and unsterilized needles of guns for tattoos and piercing are common
means of spreading hepatitis for girls in Pakistan.
2
 Transmission of the virus from mother to child during or soon after birth is the most
frequent means of transmission world-wide.
We tested the water of municipal water supply network from 10 different locations in the
microbiological laboratory of Department of Pharmacy, Lahore College For Women University,
Lahore and the results showed that seven out of ten water samples were contaminated with
sewage fecal matter. This is the same water that is spreading jaundice and diarrhea in our
community and causing deaths of innocent people across the country.
In our university canteen, the food is not hygienic and clean and the students often suffer from
stomach problems like diarrhea, jaundice and food poisoning.
The girls don’t take their own beauty tools to parlors and are getting skin and blood infections.
While getting ear piercing, the girls don’t make sure that the needles used are sterilized or not.
At many places, the street barbers are still using same razors and blades on many people
because they have lack of knowledge about the possible threats that come along with these
wrong practices.
Pakistan is among the top ten countries for having overuse and unsafe injection practices.
To have a quick knowledge about the ratio of people vaccinated against Hepatitis B, we
conducted a small survey in our class having the strength of 64 students and found out that
54% of the students were not yet vaccinated.
Apart from above, various literature surveys, publications, journals, newspapers and online
websites were explored thoroughly to get a clear view of the current situation of rapid spread
and poor control of Hepatitis A,B and C in Pakistan and to make sure that the issue raised is
really the need of the hour.

OBJECTIVES
A good management is working with objectives, so we believed in setting clearly defined goals,
objectives and time lines for our project
. The main objectives of our SAP are:
 To control the transmission of Hepatitis A,B and C.
 To educate and create awareness about the mode of transmission of disease
 To increase vaccination rate of Hepatitis B.
 To reduce the mortality caused by these diseases.
Through this SAP we want to make a Healthy Hepatitis Free Pakistan where people would have
safe, hygienic and healthy life styles with extended awareness and knowledge about how to
protect themselves against infectious diseases and viral Hepatitis. Achievement of 100 %
vaccination rates against Hepatitis B and all the other diseases included in the EPI schedule of
vaccination in our immediate friends and family circles. Early diagnosis and timely treatment by
motivating people to get tested for Hepatitis B and C even if they seem healthy, it is customary
to get tested as the symptoms of Hepatitis B and C appear at very later stages of the diseases
when the cure becomes difficult up to the challenging extent.
The direct beneficiaries of this SAP would be all the people who would be given awareness
education and also their family and friends whose misconceptions would be cleared and
mistakes would be rectified. The indirect beneficiary is the whole community as these are the
diseases that spread only from one person to another, so if we save one person from this
menace, we are saving the whole mankind. Also, as the treatment of these diseases is highly
costly and requires multiple regimens and prolonged hospitalization, their control would reduce
the medical health care costs of the government and help strengthen the economy of Pakistan.

PROBLEM
ANALYSIS/SOLUTION
ANALYSIS
Due to the prevailing incidence of hepatitis and water contamination
problems. There is an urgency to take some concrete steps to solve the
menace. People are unaware of the dangers which a small virus could
inflict upon them. Therefore they are in the direct need to be educated.
Even the educated people are oblivious of the facts.
ACTION PLAN Our goal is to spread awareness in the targeted areas through lectures,
presentations, brochures, charts, banners. Drawing and poster
competitions will be held after lectures in schools and colleges to
evaluate their understanding. Awareness March will be conducted to
grasp the attention of maximum people. Awareness will be provided
globally through facebook page. Any one joining could ask questions
and their all queries will be answered. Servant quarters and slum areas
would also be covered.
TARGET CITIES This SAP would majorly be conducted in the following cities of Punjab:
Lahore, Shakargarh, Qasoor, Gojra, Gujranwala, Wazirabaad
The cities targeted on single visit basis are:
Rawalpindi, Okara, Sheikhupura, Karachi, More khunda, Sambrial.
TIME FRAME From June to August awareness campaign will be carried out and
approximately 64 hrs of awareness will be provided by each Hep
Eradicator.
HUMAN RESOURCES NEEDED Any volunteers agreeing to help could be beneficial for the campaigns.
More will be the helping hands more awareness could be delivered.
FACEBOOK PAGE A facebook page would be created to raise awareness globally and
reach the people of different cities where educational posts and videos
will be uploaded and a General Physician from Australia would answer
6
any questions or queries of people online. The Manager and Asst.
Manager would run the page as admin.

donations within the Dept of Pharmacy, LCWU. Allocation of funds:
500/- for flex printing
2000/- for transport for group visits
1000/- for charts, posters and paints
1000/- for brochure printing for group visits
500/- for prize distribution in the visits
It was decided that all the expenses occurring in individual visits would
be individually self financed by the Hep Eradicators themselves.
VACCINATION SURVEY A survey of 2500 people would be conducted to measure the
percentage of people vaccinated in Pakistan against Hepatitis B. These
are all those people which were lectured on awareness of hepatitis and
hep eradicators approached in person.
MONITORING/DISCUSSIONS Review meetings would be held every two weeks in the campus to

lectures was arranged at the auditorium for the teachers as the teachers not only demonstrate
but also inspire their students. To catch the attention of the students, interesting and colorful
educational charts were designed by our team and displayed during the lecture. At the end of
the lecture a question answer session was held in which students asked any questions or
confusions they had about hepatitis and were asked questions by our team members for which
candies were given to the students giving the correct answers. This reflected their vigilance and
open-mindedness throughout the lecture. Awareness and knowledge about hepatitis B
vaccination schedule and doses was given to students as well as the teachers of school.

5. HOME TUITIONS & ACADEMIES & MADRASSAS:
Hep Eradicators visited 15 home tuitions of Lahore, Gujranwala and Qasur and the
following academies and madrassas:
 FIMS academy
 AIMS group of institution
 AL-HUDA International Gujranwala
 AL-Muqadas Jamya Madresa Gujranwala
 Madrassa jamia Gulzar AL-Aloome
The awareness lecture was delivered to the students and teachers in academies, madrassas and
home tuitions. Many students of different age groups were addressed. In this lecture, we
educated them to prevent themselves from hepatitis as it is a viral disease and act as a serial
killer which kills silently. It spreads in the society through unhygienic conditions and eating
substandard food stuff and drinking contaminated water. We delivered our lecture through
power point presentations on laptop and showed interesting videos and also displayed the
charts to tell them that hepatitis and jaundice is life threatening and might harm the vital
organs of the body. We deliberately used easy terms and explained things according to their
level keeping in mind no barrier should come in our way to convey our word. We focused their
attentions to the preventive measures of hepatitis in which personal hygiene is the foremost as
our Islam also embraces the importance of personal cleanliness. ”cleanliness is half faith” We
advised them to wash their hands thoroughly before eating, cut their nails regularly and never
to share toothbrushes, toothpicks, and nail cutters with each other. In home tuitions, the
children were relatively younger and were told to wash their hands properly after bathing and
playing with dirty toys. We influenced them to drink boil water as the tap water might contain
the contaminated water and drinking boil water prevents from water borne diseases, especially
diarrhea and hepatitis (A&E). We told them not to eat the substandard and spicy things from
road side fast food sellers. We also educated them about screening and vaccination schedule of
hepatitis and told them to get vaccinated.
We also forced the teachers to make sure that all the children stay clean and healthy.
In academies, we told the boys to avoid going to the street barbers for shaving and to use their
own razors and told the girls to use their own disposable tools while visiting the parlors.
At the end of lecture we also arranged the question answer session and drawing competition
which was quite interesting and students participating in it with great enthusiasm.
Hep eradicators approached these home tuitions and academies by some references. Some
team members had their family terms and some had friends’ references. We took the
permission from the teachers and principals before delivering the lecture about hepatitis.

 Ganga Raam 110
 Mayo hospital 100
Hep eradicators did vaccination visits to:
 EPI centre Civil hospital, Shakargarh
 Chaudhary hospital, Gujranwala
 Civil hospital, Wazirabaad
Hospital is one of the best areas to start with the hepatitis awareness campaign , so we took
patients in OPD waiting for their turns, patients in pediatric, medical & surgical wards, OPD and
in Hematology department .It was difficult to deliver the lecture on hepatitis because the
patients were agitated and were least interested. But once the lecture started patients as well
as their relatives took keen interest in pictures and videos shown. Hep eradicators gave detailed
information about causes, symptoms, screening, vaccination schedule, importance of boiled
water, clean food, personal hygiene and liver cleansing foods. We told blood donors and lab
attendants to use new needles every single time, screen the donors before blood transfusion
and proper disposal of needles. We listened to the problems of patients, helped them and
motivated them to get vaccinated to secure their life. Distributed the brochures made by
LIVEright-LIVERight. People were cooperative, respectful and keen to listen. They showed great
interest and asked questions and were particular about their health issues. They appreciated
the efforts of LIVEright-LIVERight in performing such life saving activities.
For vaccination visits, Hep eradicators visited the hospitals along with the people they
convinced to get vaccinated. Convincing them was a difficult job and to gather the people at the
specified time was very tricky but with cooperation of some good hearted people, it was
managed and a lot of housewives and their children got vaccinated with a small no. of male
members. Apart of these all the team members visited many hospitals with their families and
friends and got them vaccinated.

In slum areas, few people were cooperative and they arranged sitting and brought chaarpaais
and chairs from their home while most of the people were uneducated and unconcerned so it
took a lot of time to convince them to join us. We did that by going door to door.
In servant quarters we invited all the people by going door to door and gathered them in one

Hep eradicators went to visit Different saloons (men and ladies) and road side barbers in their
vicinity to educate and aware them about spread of hepatitis. The salons visited are:
17
 Vicky n Guy’s saloon
 Rockey’s saloon
 Anchal beauty parlour
 Ideal beauty parlour
 Mehak beauty saloon
 Ayesha beauty saloon
 Maryam parlour
 Singhar beauty parlour
 Kiran beauty parlour
 And many street barbers in Lari Ada and Sabzazar, Lahore.
Brochures (written Literature) were distributed to their customers which elaborately explained
causes, symptoms, prevention and cure for hepatitis.
Emphasis was on maintaining hygiene, to use separate/new blades every time, using tissue or
disposable hankie instead of using same towels on every customer, sterilize their necessary
tools i.e scissors, razors and tweezers or discard them when needed, use separate/fresh
sponges every time as it can be potential source of spreading hepatitis.
Most ladies saloons were those where we mostly go to get hair trims so they were already
acquaintances. Men saloons and barbers were reached with help of elder brothers and fathers.
At saloons it wasn’t difficult not to just gather customers’ attention and communicate but to
get owner’s permission. It was not just about awareness but it could destroy their reputation
and clientele . They were affirmative of what we conveyed them and took keen interest. Those
who had no knowledge about hepatitis were inquisitive and asked questions which were
answered by hep eradicators.
At road side barbers we faced communication/language problems but we had separate
brochure/written literature in urdu to distribute them and used layman language and Punjabi
terminologies to help bridge the communication gap.

The main purpose of our activity is to spread awareness about Hepatitis, making people aware
about the causes, treatment, and its prevention. As we know the fact that “Prevention is better
than cure” so our main focus was on its prevention. We told them that unhygienic and poor
quality foods are the major reasons of causing hepatitis and jaundice. We also educated the
shopkeepers about the proper maintenance of food, fruit, and other food stuff, and their
proper handling and use of purified water. We also educated the people who were buying
foodstuff by giving them brochures and by verbally telling them about the spread of hepatitis
through these insanitary food, our intention was not to convince the people to stop buying
these things we just wanted to aware them that they should check the quality of food before
eating because it’s a matter of health. We told them that the uncooked chicken or meat is the
major reason of liver infections and told the shopkeeper to cook them properly and not to play
with the health of people just for the sake of money.
In the restaurants, we told the owners to maintain good hygiene and cleanliness of their
utensils and also maintain good personal hygiene while cooking the food, do abstain from
cooking food when any injury occurs because hepatitis B and C spread through blood. We
convinced them to wear gloves during cooking. Above all we compelled the people to get
screened for hepatitis and do save themselves and their society.
Hep eradicators went to the market by themselves and visited food stalls there and educating
the people about hepatitis. It was difficult to convince shopkeepers as they thought of us as
strangers came to criticize their practices. Mostly people were very reluctant and conservative
and didn’t take interest and it was difficult to make them listen. Some said they were alright but
many people visiting those places were well aware about hepatitis and they were exceptionally
cooperative and vigilant and appreciated our task. Some of the restaurants were well
maintained and also made us visit their kitchens and check their quality food. So it was an
interesting and challenging task for us.

10.PARKS:
Hep eradicators also visited the Colony parks to educate the people about Hepatitis.
In the evening, many people come in the parks especially housewives who take their children
for amusement and elder citizens so during our visit to these places we educated them about
hepatitis and its cure and prevention. We told them that how the housewife plays a vital role in
controlling the diseases in her home and maintaining the cleanliness of her family. Also told
them about hepatitis transmission through mother to baby so when mother is healthy her
children are healthy too and they must get themselves and their children vaccinated. We told
them water purification methods through boiling, sunlight and filtration and the proper way of
boiling the water and also gave them some tips of washing the vegetables and fruits thoroughly
before eating and cooking and which foods are healthy for liver.
We also told the elders how they could become healthy and protected from such diseases in
that age because diseases can be abstained by prevention. Brochures were distributed among
the people and their queries about hepatitis were answered. Also told them to get themselves
and their children vaccinated against hepatitis.
Hep eradicators visited the parks with some of their family members and educated the people
there.
The people in the parks were are quite cooperative and vigilant in listening to us and they
showed good response and asked us about the vaccination schedule of hepatitis and elders
were very kind to us and listened to us carefully although it was difficult to gain the attention of
some elders, because of hearing problem. So to educate all the people in the parks at one time
was quite tedious but interesting work.

CHALLENGES
Language barrier :
Our team opted people from different fields of life for our awareness lecture. Language barrier
was a problem as most of the people in slums and servant quarters were not able to
understand English and Urdu language so to cope with that problem lectures were given in
Punjabi to them and it included specific Punjabi terms which were specially learned by our team
members for this program. While in schools, universities, offices, industries and parks lectures
were given either in English or Urdu according to their respective mediums.
Comprehension problems:
Lectures were given to people of different age groups and different professions .There were
people who did not know the ABC of hepatitis and there were kids and illiterate people who
were not able to understand the medical jargon so it was a challenge to make them understand
the lecture and educate them. For that purpose simple and easy lectures were delivered.
Special charts and videos containing information about hepatitis were made and shown to
them to make information more receptive. Question answer session was held to address their
queries and to answer any question regarding hepatitis stuck in their mind and lucid
explanation for each question was given to satisfy them. Quizzes were held at few places at the
end to know their level of understanding of lecture .Brochures were distributed containing
information both in English and Urdu for their better understanding , future use and for the
purpose of sharing information with others.
Seeking Permission :
We had a hard time seeking permission for our lectures in Offices, Schools, colleges and
Restaurants. Administration of schools and offices were not willing to give us time from their
busy schedule as they thought of it as some promotional stuff from some company but once
they were told that it was a part of our social program which was for the benefit of their own
employees and students, they realized the importance of our lecture and granted us
permission. Similarly, people in parks were reluctant to give us few minutes from their workout
and unwinding time but when they were told that the information is equally important for their
health they agreed happily. Some of the multinational companies granted permission with the
21
condition that their confidential details or pictures would not be published anywhere.
Time contraints:
At most of the places, time was limited for the whole activity as special time was granted by the
working class and housewives took time specially from their children and busy schedules for
our awareness activity. Keeping in mind this time factor, active time management was done
and a brief, terse and to the point lecture was given according to our time limits. We refrained
ourselves from rambling and getting off the point so that maximum information could be
provided in minimum time and lecture was clipped according to our time window, however
making sure not to miss any important point. However in cases when we had reasonable time
we conducted quizzes, drawing competitions and other activities to make maximum use of our
time in the best way.
Grabbing attention:
Grabbing the attention of people was quite a challenge. As in case of hospitals, patients were
agitated and least bothered while few started whining about the problems they had with
doctors and hospital administration but once the lecture was delivered and videos were shown
they started taking interest in our lecture. To grab the attention of school kids and to influence
their little impressionable minds, colorful charts and videos containing required information
were used. Similarly candies were distributed among kids at home and goodie bags at school on
answering our questions and during various activities.
Motivating for vaccination:
Motivating people to get tested and vaccinated for hepatitis was quite a task as they were
reluctant to spend their money considering it useless and waste of money. They were told that
how this menace was plaguing our society and 12 to 15 million population of Pakistan was
already suffering from various forms of hepatitis and how easy and inexpensive it was to get
tested for hepatitis as the strips of hepatitis B and C testing strips were just for Rs 17 and 19
respectively and how important it was to get vaccinated for hepatitis B for the sake of their own
lives and that their lives are more precious than the cost of the test.
Funding issues :
As we were doing social action program and were not provided with funds from any
organization. Our whole program had to head on self finance basis and arranging
transportation, brochures, banners and other required stuff in that slim budget was quite
challenging so we asked teachers and students for their contributions for this special cause and
we made special plans to cut down our needs and to use that limited amount wisely in the best
22
possible way.
Arranging for transportation:
Arranging for transportation to the targeted areas was one of the challenges that we faced but
we tackled that with the help of our van drivers and university administration. Different
vehicles were opted by us including car ride volunteered by our team members, vans and
rickshaws. The role played by our van drivers was really commendable as they provided us ride
when needed and helped us hiring rickshaws from outside the university and arranging buses
with trusted drivers for far located areas.

LEARNING POINTS :
Working for a social cause was an unparallel experience and was a huge learning curve for us.
 This project helped us in improving our interpersonal skills as for the purpose of
spreading awareness we met and communicated with variety of people and we learnt
how to communicate with people from various classes, ages and professions .
 The most important thing that we learnt is how to convince others as this was one
requirement of our project to convince people for various purposes like to get
vaccinated.
 We also learnt how to face the challenges of life during this program as during our visit
to servant quarter the story narrated by a maid of her husband suffering from hepatitis
and facing down this menace inspired us and taught us how to keep the chin up during
the difficult phase of our lives.
 Since we worked for our project in groups so we also learnt how to work in a group, how
to take along all members of group and how to distribute work among group members.
 This program also boosted our confidence level as we interacted with people on large
scale.
24
Chapter no.7
RESULTS
Under this campaign,we approached almost 7000 people in 12 cities of Pakistan which included
men, women, young and old, people of all ages, professions and status. They were educated
through different means about the possible health hazard that come from Hepatitis and the
possible preventive measures to be taken against it. The feedback forms filled from people
showed that they found our activities very informative and interesting and the lectures
addressed all their queries about Hepatitis. Many of them also mentioned that they would
share their knowledge with others.
We did a vaccination survey of 1500 people to evaluate how many were already vaccinated and
how many were getting vaccinated after inspirational lecture of spending a healthy hepatitis
free life. The data collection criterion which was adopted includes specific no. of people from all
three classes which could be communicated after wards for evaluation.
Lower class = 250 people
Middle class = 1000 people
Upper class = 500 people
Following is the graphical representation of the no. of people vaccinated:
LOWER CLASS
MIDDLE CLASS
UPPER CLASS
9%
51%
75%
15%
65%
91%
BEFORE After deliverance of lecture
25
The above result clearly shows that about 6%, 14%, and 16% rise in the vaccination rate of the
lower, middle, and upper class respectively is due to the awareness carried out by Hep
eradicators. And as they say, even if you have saved a life of one person, you have saved the
whole mankind, whereas we saved many. This clearly speaks out the success of our campaign.
Our vision was to create a healthy society therefore this campaign was conducted and the
awareness was being provided in every sector more or less. These included parks, offices,
restaurants, schools, colleges, barbers, parlors, hospitals. Though it was not easy but we coped
the difficulties with valor and vigor and achieved our goal and resultantly, were able to create
awareness against hepatitis and increase vaccination rate. And,in doing so we have definitely
helped put a stop to the transmission and reduction of mortality rate. So yes, we have, by the
grace of God, been successful in achieving our goals.
Our facebook page has more than 500 likes where all the confusions n queries of the people
from all over Pakistan are being answered efficiently online by our GPs, Dr. Kiran Muzaffar
Bhatti from Australia and Dr.Hira Hamid from Lahore.
Many people are joining their hands in this noble cause which was also demonstrated in the
march conducted in the premises of LCWU and the awareness seminar conducted in the King
Edward medical university which have been milestones in our journey.
The continuity of our SAP has been assured by the Students’ Patient Welfare Society which has
now been continuing raising awareness against Hepatitis after our seminar that motivated
them to continue our work and for which they have conducted an awareness seminar in
Kemcanna Learning Resource Centre on September 6,2013 where Dr.Maqbool Arshad delivered
the lecture. Apart from that, the fresh batch of students of Pharm-D, from LCWU who is now
under the process of ACP training is also ready to take the leash and continue our project.
*The website link of our facebook page and the awareness video that we made, is provided in
the annexure.

Chapter no.8
OUTCOMES
 The response we got from the public was very positive and which proved to be a
constant energy supplement to our movement.
 Many of the housewives did get off their homes and went for vaccination.
 A lot of people went for the screening test and our more vigilant towards high
cholesterol and raised LFT levels, some of the reports have been forwarded to us on the
facebook page as well.
 Hep eradicators joined their loved ones in their immediate family and friends circle in
their hospital visits to get vaccinated.
 After the evaluation program we witnessed that the people were adopting good hygiene
practices.
 Some of the victims of hepatitis in slums who were visiting hakeems and unauthentic
religious priests started visiting the hospital to get proper treatment.
 Most of the women in the servant quarters started boiling water or purifying it through
sunlight which they did not do before.
 Due to awareness about the screening and testing people actually considered going for
it.
 The question answer sessions and the confusions showed by the people on our page
and consequently, us answering them was an achievement.
 Most of the children found it fun to follow and remember all the steps of washing hands
and practiced it during their break timings with their friends and mates, as reported to
us by the teachers.
 People have started sharing their health issues with us not only about Hepatitis but also
fatty liver and general health issues in pregnancy or child growth that are being
addressed by our physicians.
 A lot of people are joining the cause everyday and showing their interest in working
voluntarily for the betterment of the society.
27
CONCLUSION AND EXPERIENCE
Do people know the evils hepatitis is spreading in our society? And even did u know? NO, is the
answer, therefore we became the voice of millions who died of it but didn’t deserve to die. So we
started the campaign with the motive to put an end to this hazard. Thus, after great efforts on
part of every Hep-eradicator we were able to make our campaign a success story. We set many
milestones on our road to make healthy hepatitis free society, however there are still many to
set. ‘’knowledge is the best weapon against hepatitis’’ this is slogan of our campaign. For
everything we pass to the next generation knowledge is the most important. Therefore carrying
this weapon in many forms we approached approximately 6,682 people. By teaching them,
educating them and shedding light on the seriousness of the situation. We made them realize
that how few changes in their lifestyle could perk up their quality of life. Our whole campaign is
embodiment of living RIGHT. We didn’t just restrict ourselves to the city we live in but lodged
our flags in other cities as well. This campaign not only proved to be beneficial for the society
but also for us. This noble effort polished our communication, interpersonal skills and made us
empathize with the poor and understand their plight. This is not the end it’s just the beginning
of the era in which our youth will rise against such nuisance in the society and make it a place
worth living. We set the base of our campaign on not just knowing and willing but also doing
and applying it practically. We are proud of the outcomes of this movement and we shall carry it
on in any way possible. We should all join hands and thrive together for better tomorrow.

  • 5. 1 Chapter no.1 BACKGROUND OF THE ISSUE “LIVEright LIVERight” is a Social Action Programme, designed to raise awareness and educate people to control the spread of Hepatitis A,B and C. There is a real need for action against these potentially life threatening diseases considering the current situation of Pakistan. Pakistan carries one of the world’s highest burdens of chronic hepatitis and mortality due to liver failure and hepatocellular carcinomas. In Pakistan more people die of Hepatitis every day than terrorism in a year. Approximately 1 in 12 persons worldwide or some, 500 million people are living with chronic viral hepatitis. Knowledge is the best weapon against Hepatitis and people are not aware about how hepatitis spreads and how to secure their lives. Pakistan has the 2nd highest prevalence rate of hepatitis C ranging from 4.5% to 8% and is responsible for 50–76% of all liver cancer cases. The prevalence data estimated Hepatitis B at 3-5 % in Pakistan. Key issues 1. Hepatitis A spreads by Contaminated Water and food: PCRWR after testing of different water sources across 24 districts in the country found that over 80% of them provided water which was unsafe for drinking. 250,000 children die each year in Pakistan as a result of water borne illnesses which stem from drinking impure water. Hepatitis A is transmitted via food contaminated by infected food-handlers, uncooked foods, or foods handled after cooking by vendors and served in Low standard Restaurants. 2. Hepatitis B and C spreads by  Reuse Of syringes: Overuse and unsafe injection practices cause 8 to 16 million Hepatitis B virus infections and 2 to 5 million Hepatitis C virus infections every year.  Unscreened Blood Transfusion: In apparently healthy blood donors, about 4% are positive for Hepatitis "B" and 6% for Hepatitis "C".  Street barbers, who often use the same blades or razor on many people.  Use of unsterilized Dental and Medical devices  Beauty tools and unsterilized needles of guns for tattoos and piercing are common means of spreading hepatitis for girls in Pakistan.
  • 6. 2  Transmission of the virus from mother to child during or soon after birth is the most frequent means of transmission world-wide. We tested the water of municipal water supply network from 10 different locations in the microbiological laboratory of Department of Pharmacy, Lahore College For Women University, Lahore and the results showed that seven out of ten water samples were contaminated with sewage fecal matter. This is the same water that is spreading jaundice and diarrhea in our community and causing deaths of innocent people across the country. In our university canteen, the food is not hygienic and clean and the students often suffer from stomach problems like diarrhea, jaundice and food poisoning. The girls don’t take their own beauty tools to parlors and are getting skin and blood infections. While getting ear piercing, the girls don’t make sure that the needles used are sterilized or not. At many places, the street barbers are still using same razors and blades on many people because they have lack of knowledge about the possible threats that come along with these wrong practices. Pakistan is among the top ten countries for having overuse and unsafe injection practices. To have a quick knowledge about the ratio of people vaccinated against Hepatitis B, we conducted a small survey in our class having the strength of 64 students and found out that 54% of the students were not yet vaccinated. Apart from above, various literature surveys, publications, journals, newspapers and online websites were explored thoroughly to get a clear view of the current situation of rapid spread and poor control of Hepatitis A,B and C in Pakistan and to make sure that the issue raised is really the need of the hour.
  • 7. 3 Chapter no.2 OBJECTIVES A good management is working with objectives, so we believed in setting clearly defined goals, objectives and time lines for our project . The main objectives of our SAP are:  To control the transmission of Hepatitis A,B and C.  To educate and create awareness about the mode of transmission of disease  To increase vaccination rate of Hepatitis B.  To reduce the mortality caused by these diseases. Through this SAP we want to make a Healthy Hepatitis Free Pakistan where people would have safe, hygienic and healthy life styles with extended awareness and knowledge about how to protect themselves against infectious diseases and viral Hepatitis. Achievement of 100 % vaccination rates against Hepatitis B and all the other diseases included in the EPI schedule of vaccination in our immediate friends and family circles. Early diagnosis and timely treatment by motivating people to get tested for Hepatitis B and C even if they seem healthy, it is customary to get tested as the symptoms of Hepatitis B and C appear at very later stages of the diseases when the cure becomes difficult up to the challenging extent. The direct beneficiaries of this SAP would be all the people who would be given awareness education and also their family and friends whose misconceptions would be cleared and mistakes would be rectified. The indirect beneficiary is the whole community as these are the diseases that spread only from one person to another, so if we save one person from this menace, we are saving the whole mankind. Also, as the treatment of these diseases is highly costly and requires multiple regimens and prolonged hospitalization, their control would reduce the medical health care costs of the government and help strengthen the economy of Pakistan.
  • 8. 4 Chapter no.3 ACTIVITY PLANNING For success of any operation accurate planning is required and one must have direct approach towards the fundamentals of his work. Therefore, we planned our project carefully keeping in our mind the accessibility, cost effectiveness and maximum coverage as possible to give awareness to all irrespective of their classes. Following chart represent the mission targets. Hep eradicators will visit the targeted areas individually or in form of small groups in order to spread the awareness TARGET AREAS SALOONS barbers(street &local) beauty parlors RECREATIONAL POINTS parks restaurants cafes food hubs juice corners RESIDENTIALS slums servant quarters housing schemes ORGANIZATIONAL hospitals industries offices EDUCATIONAL schools colleges madarassas academies home tuition

Many students of different age groups were addressed. In this lecture, we educated them to prevent themselves from hepatitis as it is a viral disease and act as a serial killer which kills silently. It spreads in the society through unhygienic conditions and eating substandard food stuff and drinking contaminated water. We delivered our lecture through power point presentations on laptop and showed interesting videos and also displayed the charts to tell them that hepatitis and jaundice is life threatening and might harm the vital organs of the body. We deliberately used easy terms and explained things according to their level keeping in mind no barrier should come in our way to convey our word. We focused their attentions to the preventive measures of hepatitis in which personal hygiene is the foremost as our Islam also embraces the importance of personal cleanliness. ”cleanliness is half faith” We advised them to wash their hands thoroughly before eating, cut their nails regularly and never to share toothbrushes, toothpicks, and nail cutters with each other. In home tuitions, the children were relatively younger and were told to wash their hands properly after bathing and playing with dirty toys. We influenced them to drink boil water as the tap water might contain the contaminated water and drinking boil water prevents from water borne diseases, especially diarrhea and hepatitis (A&E). We told them not to eat the substandard and spicy things from road side fast food sellers. We also educated them about screening and vaccination schedule of hepatitis and told them to get vaccinated. We also forced the teachers to make sure that all the children stay clean and healthy. In academies, we told the boys to avoid going to the street barbers for shaving and to use their own razors and told the girls to use their own disposable tools while visiting the parlors. At the end of lecture we also arranged the question answer session and drawing competition which was quite interesting and students participating in it with great enthusiasm. Hep eradicators approached these home tuitions and academies by some references. Some team members had their family terms and some had friends’ references. We took the permission from the teachers and principals before delivering the lecture about hepatitis.

  • 20. 16 do that easily but when we told them about our project aims they allowed us and welcomed us in a good way .We invited 7-8 nearby house ladies, children & maids to join us in this period. In slum areas, few people were cooperative and they arranged sitting and brought chaarpaais and chairs from their home while most of the people were uneducated and unconcerned so it took a lot of time to convince them to join us. We did that by going door to door. In servant quarters we invited all the people by going door to door and gathered them in one quarter or outside veranda on chaarpaais. We gave the people all important guidelines to fight against Hepatitis. Gave them detailed knowledge about How, Why & When Hepatitis spreads and how we can prevent it. Gave information about vaccines, their doses, importance of boiled water, clean food, all hygiene & liver cleansing food and told them about symptoms & cure of Hepatitis. As the health department of a common man is majorly in the hands of the housewife so we also emphasized on the liver friendly foods. We told them about water purification methods, about screening test of hepatitis and importance of exercise . Most of the people in slum areas & servant quarters were not vaccinated. We told them about importance of vaccination & gave them task to get themselves vaccinated to which they agreed. We distributed brochures & convinced them to live healthy life style & forced them to advice others about prevention of Hepatitis. At the end we asked the children questions about the spread and preventive measures of Hepatitis and distributed candies. The response of people was remarkable. Brochures (written Literature) were distributed to their customers which elaborately explained causes, symptoms, prevention and cure for hepatitis. Emphasis was on maintaining hygiene, to use separate/new blades every time, using tissue or disposable hankie instead of using same towels on every customer, sterilize their necessary tools i.e scissors, razors and tweezers or discard them when needed, use separate/fresh sponges every time as it can be potential source of spreading hepatitis. Most ladies saloons were those where we mostly go to get hair trims so they were already acquaintances. Men saloons and barbers were reached with help of elder brothers and fathers. At saloons it wasn’t difficult not to just gather customers’ attention and communicate but to get owner’s permission. It was not just about awareness but it could destroy their reputation and clientele . They were affirmative of what we conveyed them and took keen interest. Those who had no knowledge about hepatitis were inquisitive and asked questions which were answered by hep eradicators. At road side barbers we faced communication/language problems but we had separate brochure/written literature in urdu to distribute them and used layman language and Punjabi terminologies to help bridge the communication gap. • 22. 18  Sweet houses: Lala sweets, Ramzan sweets  Juice corners: Sheikh juice corner  Caffe corners: Nishat Café’  Friute sellers  Tikka: spicy tika shop  Biryani shop: sindhi chicken biryani The main purpose of our activity is to spread awareness about Hepatitis, making people aware about the causes, treatment, and its prevention. As we know the fact that “Prevention is better than cure” so our main focus was on its prevention. We told them that unhygienic and poor quality foods are the major reasons of causing hepatitis and jaundice. We also educated the shopkeepers about the proper maintenance of food, fruit, and other food stuff, and their proper handling and use of purified water. We also educated the people who were buying foodstuff by giving them brochures and by verbally telling them about the spread of hepatitis through these insanitary food, our intention was not to convince the people to stop buying these things we just wanted to aware them that they should check the quality of food before eating because it’s a matter of health. We told them that the uncooked chicken or meat is the major reason of liver infections and told the shopkeeper to cook them properly and not to play with the health of people just for the sake of money. In the restaurants, we told the owners to maintain good hygiene and cleanliness of their utensils and also maintain good personal hygiene while cooking the food, do abstain from cooking food when any injury occurs because hepatitis B and C spread through blood. We convinced them to wear gloves during cooking. Above all we compelled the people to get screened for hepatitis and do save themselves and their society. Hep eradicators went to the market by themselves and visited food stalls there and educating the people about hepatitis. It was difficult to convince shopkeepers as they thought of us as strangers came to criticize their practices. Mostly people were very reluctant and conservative and didn’t take interest and it was difficult to make them listen. Some said they were alright but many people visiting those places were well aware about hepatitis and they were exceptionally cooperative and vigilant and appreciated our task. Some of the restaurants were well maintained and also made us visit their kitchens and check their quality food. So it was an interesting and challenging task for us. No. of people approached: 150
  • 23. 19 10.PARKS: Hep eradicators also visited the Colony parks to educate the people about Hepatitis. In the evening, many people come in the parks especially housewives who take their children for amusement and elder citizens so during our visit to these places we educated them about hepatitis and its cure and prevention. We told them that how the housewife plays a vital role in controlling the diseases in her home and maintaining the cleanliness of her family. Also told them about hepatitis transmission through mother to baby so when mother is healthy her children are healthy too and they must get themselves and their children vaccinated. We told them water purification methods through boiling, sunlight and filtration and the proper way of boiling the water and also gave them some tips of washing the vegetables and fruits thoroughly before eating and cooking and which foods are healthy for liver. We also told the elders how they could become healthy and protected from such diseases in that age because diseases can be abstained by prevention. Brochures were distributed among the people and their queries about hepatitis were answered. Also told them to get themselves and their children vaccinated against hepatitis. Hep eradicators visited the parks with some of their family members and educated the people there. The people in the parks were are quite cooperative and vigilant in listening to us and they showed good response and asked us about the vaccination schedule of hepatitis and elders were very kind to us and listened to us carefully although it was difficult to gain the attention of some elders, because of hearing problem. So to educate all the people in the parks at one time was quite tedious but interesting work. No. of people approached: 40
  • 24. 20 Chapter no.5 CHALLENGES Language barrier : Our team opted people from different fields of life for our awareness lecture. Language barrier was a problem as most of the people in slums and servant quarters were not able to understand English and Urdu language so to cope with that problem lectures were given in Punjabi to them and it included specific Punjabi terms which were specially learned by our team members for this program. While in schools, universities, offices, industries and parks lectures were given either in English or Urdu according to their respective mediums. Comprehension problems: Lectures were given to people of different age groups and different professions .There were people who did not know the ABC of hepatitis and there were kids and illiterate people who were not able to understand the medical jargon so it was a challenge to make them understand the lecture and educate them. For that purpose simple and easy lectures were delivered. Special charts and videos containing information about hepatitis were made and shown to them to make information more receptive. Question answer session was held to address their queries and to answer any question regarding hepatitis stuck in their mind and lucid explanation for each question was given to satisfy them. Quizzes were held at few places at the end to know their level of understanding of lecture .Brochures were distributed containing information both in English and Urdu for their better understanding , future use and for the purpose of sharing information with others. Seeking Permission : We had a hard time seeking permission for our lectures in Offices, Schools, colleges and Restaurants. Administration of schools and offices were not willing to give us time from their busy schedule as they thought of it as some promotional stuff from some company but once they were told that it was a part of our social program which was for the benefit of their own employees and students, they realized the importance of our lecture and granted us permission. Similarly, people in parks were reluctant to give us few minutes from their workout and unwinding time but when they were told that the information is equally important for their health they agreed happily. Some of the multinational companies granted permission with the
  • 25. 21 condition that their confidential details or pictures would not be published anywhere. Time contraints: At most of the places, time was limited for the whole activity as special time was granted by the working class and housewives took time specially from their children and busy schedules for our awareness activity. Keeping in mind this time factor, active time management was done and a brief, terse and to the point lecture was given according to our time limits. We refrained ourselves from rambling and getting off the point so that maximum information could be provided in minimum time and lecture was clipped according to our time window, however making sure not to miss any important point. However in cases when we had reasonable time we conducted quizzes, drawing competitions and other activities to make maximum use of our time in the best way. Grabbing attention: Grabbing the attention of people was quite a challenge. As in case of hospitals, patients were agitated and least bothered while few started whining about the problems they had with doctors and hospital administration but once the lecture was delivered and videos were shown they started taking interest in our lecture. To grab the attention of school kids and to influence their little impressionable minds, colorful charts and videos containing required information were used. Similarly candies were distributed among kids at home and goodie bags at school on answering our questions and during various activities. Motivating for vaccination: Motivating people to get tested and vaccinated for hepatitis was quite a task as they were reluctant to spend their money considering it useless and waste of money. They were told that how this menace was plaguing our society and 12 to 15 million population of Pakistan was already suffering from various forms of hepatitis and how easy and inexpensive it was to get tested for hepatitis as the strips of hepatitis B and C testing strips were just for Rs 17 and 19 respectively and how important it was to get vaccinated for hepatitis B for the sake of their own lives and that their lives are more precious than the cost of the test. Funding issues : As we were doing social action program and were not provided with funds from any organization. Our whole program had to head on self finance basis and arranging transportation, brochures, banners and other required stuff in that slim budget was quite challenging so we asked teachers and students for their contributions for this special cause and we made special plans to cut down our needs and to use that limited amount wisely in the best
  • 26. 22 possible way. Arranging for transportation: Arranging for transportation to the targeted areas was one of the challenges that we faced but we tackled that with the help of our van drivers and university administration. Different vehicles were opted by us including car ride volunteered by our team members, vans and rickshaws. The role played by our van drivers was really commendable as they provided us ride when needed and helped us hiring rickshaws from outside the university and arranging buses with trusted drivers for far located areas.
  • 27. 23 Chapter no.6 LEARNING POINTS : Working for a social cause was an unparallel experience and was a huge learning curve for us.  This project helped us in improving our interpersonal skills as for the purpose of spreading awareness we met and communicated with variety of people and we learnt how to communicate with people from various classes, ages and professions .  The most important thing that we learnt is how to convince others as this was one requirement of our project to convince people for various purposes like to get vaccinated.  We also learnt how to face the challenges of life during this program as during our visit to servant quarter the story narrated by a maid of her husband suffering from hepatitis and facing down this menace inspired us and taught us how to keep the chin up during the difficult phase of our lives.  Since we worked for our project in groups so we also learnt how to work in a group, how to take along all members of group and how to distribute work among group members.  This program also boosted our confidence level as we interacted with people on large scale.
  • 28. 24 Chapter no.7 RESULTS Under this campaign,we approached almost 7000 people in 12 cities of Pakistan which included men, women, young and old, people of all ages, professions and status. They were educated through different means about the possible health hazard that come from Hepatitis and the possible preventive measures to be taken against it. The feedback forms filled from people showed that they found our activities very informative and interesting and the lectures addressed all their queries about Hepatitis. Many of them also mentioned that they would share their knowledge with others. We did a vaccination survey of 1500 people to evaluate how many were already vaccinated and how many were getting vaccinated after inspirational lecture of spending a healthy hepatitis free life. The data collection criterion which was adopted includes specific no. of people from all three classes which could be communicated after wards for evaluation. Lower class = 250 people Middle class = 1000 people Upper class = 500 people Following is the graphical representation of the no. of people vaccinated: LOWER CLASS MIDDLE CLASS UPPER CLASS 9% 51% 75% 15% 65% 91% BEFORE After deliverance of lecture
  • 29. 25 The above result clearly shows that about 6%, 14%, and 16% rise in the vaccination rate of the lower, middle, and upper class respectively is due to the awareness carried out by Hep eradicators. And as they say, even if you have saved a life of one person, you have saved the whole mankind, whereas we saved many. This clearly speaks out the success of our campaign. Our vision was to create a healthy society therefore this campaign was conducted and the awareness was being provided in every sector more or less. These included parks, offices, restaurants, schools, colleges, barbers, parlors, hospitals. Though it was not easy but we coped the difficulties with valor and vigor and achieved our goal and resultantly, were able to create awareness against hepatitis and increase vaccination rate. And,in doing so we have definitely helped put a stop to the transmission and reduction of mortality rate. So yes, we have, by the grace of God, been successful in achieving our goals. Our facebook page has more than 500 likes where all the confusions n queries of the people from all over Pakistan are being answered efficiently online by our GPs, Dr. Kiran Muzaffar Bhatti from Australia and Dr.Hira Hamid from Lahore. Many people are joining their hands in this noble cause which was also demonstrated in the march conducted in the premises of LCWU and the awareness seminar conducted in the King Edward medical university which have been milestones in our journey. The continuity of our SAP has been assured by the Students’ Patient Welfare Society which has now been continuing raising awareness against Hepatitis after our seminar that motivated them to continue our work and for which they have conducted an awareness seminar in Kemcanna Learning Resource Centre on September 6,2013 where Dr.Maqbool Arshad delivered the lecture. Apart from that, the fresh batch of students of Pharm-D, from LCWU who is now under the process of ACP training is also ready to take the leash and continue our project. *The website link of our facebook page and the awareness video that we made, is provided in the annexure.

  • 31. 27 CONCLUSION AND EXPERIENCE Do people know the evils hepatitis is spreading in our society? And even did u know? NO, is the answer, therefore we became the voice of millions who died of it but didn’t deserve to die. So we started the campaign with the motive to put an end to this hazard. Thus, after great efforts on part of every Hep-eradicator we were able to make our campaign a success story. We set many milestones on our road to make healthy hepatitis free society, however there are still many to set. ‘’knowledge is the best weapon against hepatitis’’ this is slogan of our campaign. For everything we pass to the next generation knowledge is the most important. Therefore carrying this weapon in many forms we approached approximately 6,682 people. By teaching them, educating them and shedding light on the seriousness of the situation. We made them realize that how few changes in their lifestyle could perk up their quality of life. Our whole campaign is embodiment of living RIGHT. We didn’t just restrict ourselves to the city we live in but lodged our flags in other cities as well. This campaign not only proved to be beneficial for the society but also for us. This noble effort polished our communication, interpersonal skills and made us empathize with the poor and understand their plight. This is not the end it’s just the beginning of the era in which our youth will rise against such nuisance in the society and make it a place worth living. We set the base of our campaign on not just knowing and willing but also doing and applying it practically. We are proud of the outcomes of this movement and we shall carry it on in any way possible. We should all join hands and thrive together for better tomorrow.
