The intern gained experience in decellularizing mouse, pig, and human lungs under the mentorship of Dr. Franzi Uhl. Some of the intern's responsibilities included removing mouse lungs, mixing solutions, and desk work. For a science fair project, the intern designed an experiment to investigate preventing bacterial contamination in decellularized mouse lungs by testing different antibiotic concentrations. The intern also assisted with a pig lung decellularization photo protocol and learned how to make sterile agar plates by properly mixing, autoclaving, cooling, and pouring the solution.

• PhD in natural science
• Masters in bioengineering
• From Germany
• Thanks for being an awesome
mentor
4. What I did
Projects
Human and Pig lung decel
photo protocol
Science fair: preventing
contamination in decellularized
mouse lungs
Responsibilities
decelling mouse lungs
Removing mouse lungs
from mice
Helping with human and
pig lung decell
Mixing solutions
Desk work
6. Preventing
contamination in
decellurized mouse
lungs
Science fair project 2014 - 15
• WHY
• Many people need lung transplants
• decellularizing is the first step to
growing lungs
• Experiments are done on mouse lungs
• decellularized mouse lungs often get
contaminated with bacteria
7. Science fair project
• WHAT:
• Researching pen-strep
antibiotics, agar, etc
• growing bacteria from samples
taken each day of decell, to find
out when contamination occurs
• Doubling the quantity of
penicillin-streptomycin to
prevent contamination
• RESULTS:
• Coming next term
12. How to make agar plates
Teaching a skill
Mix agar and DI water
Mix 23 grams agar per
Liter of water
Microwave In 1 minute
intervals until agar has
dissolved(about 2 minutes)
Mixing agar
Autoclave agar to insure
sterility
Allow to cool
Label all solutions with
content initials and date
13. Teaching a skill
Pouring the plates
Make sure agar is a
liquid. If not
microwave to
liquify
Tip up lid of plate
and pore agar slowly
to avoid bubbles Seal plate with
parafilm, store upside-
down in fridge
