The cloud provides a new way to utilize tech for good. Technology such as AI/ML can connect our communities with data and actionability to solve large cultural problems. Join leaders from Wadhwani AI and The 1Life Project to hear how large scale transformation is occurring in healthcare and agriculture both in the US and India.

6. HEALTHCARE
INFECTIOUS
DISEASES
In 2016, there were 10.4 million new
active TB cases and 1.7 million deaths
worldwide. It is estimated that as many
as 50% of TB cases may go unreported
and unknown.
In January 2019, Wadhwani AI became
the official AI partner for India’s Central
Tuberculosis Division.
We are creating technologies to address
multiple challenges -
- Case load estimation at the district
level
- Prioritisation of TB patients for health
workers.
7. HEALTHCARE
MATERNAL AND
CHILD HEALTH
Low birth weight babies account for 48
per cent of newborn deaths in India.
We are creating a smartphone-based
anthropometry technology, which will
allow frontline workers to screen for
low birth weight babies in rural homes.
This AI-powered virtual weighing
machine will provide accurate, tamper-
proof, geo-tagged measurements on a
smartphone, without the need for
additional hardware or data
connectivity.
8. AGRICULTURE
INTEGRATED PEST
MANAGEMENT
Cotton is India’s third largest crop. One of
the critical challenges cotton farmers face
is the inability to manage pests.
At Wadhwani AI, we are working towards
creating technologies that will help reduce
crop losses through integrated pest
management.
We have already developed algorithms
that detect two major pests and
completed field demos in partnership with
the Better Cotton Initiative and the
Government of Maharashtra.

7 QUESTIONS
TO CONSIDER
1 Is this a big problem?
2 Does it have an AI solution?
3 Will solving the AI part make enough
of a difference?
4 Will the solution be accepted by
stakeholders? (The user is just one.)
5 Does the data exist? If not, can it be
created easily enough?
6 Are there partner organisations who
can co-create and pilot?
7 Are there programs and pathways
to scale?
