Leveraging object storage will allow the Scale-out Backup Repository (SOBR) to become effectively unlimited in regard to
capacity and scale within Amazon S3
Veeam does not charge subscription for the data that is sitting in object storage
Key characteristics of the implementation:
Offloaded backup files remain on the Performance Tiers extents
• These are now in the form of a “shell” only: metadata and pointers to contents in object storage
• Shells also serve as local “cache” to reduce cloud I/O charges (can be rebuilt from object storage if lost)
All Veeam restore functionality “just works” transparently with shells
• Instant recovery (including instant virtualization of physical computer backups)
• Entire computer and disk-level restore
• File-level and item-level restore
Intelligent Block Recovery
• Restores use the closest non-offloaded restore point to source data blocks which are unchanged between the two points
• This improves efficiency and speed of restore functions, and reduces egress charges

Block Sizes (Before Compression)
• Local Target (16 TB + backup files): 4096 KB data blocks

Smaller the Block Size the more calls we make to the Object Storage to upload the data which
will impact cost to upload to Amazon S3
