Internship Report
1. Internship Report
June – July 2016
At
L&T Electrical and Automation, Mumbai
Student Amar Upadhyay
Program B-Tech Electronics, Aligarh Muslim University
Department Switchgear Design and Development Centre
Supervisor Mr. Usufe Shaikh
2. Acknowledgement
First I would like to thank Mr Ali Shazan, ex-employee (L &T) and my senior for his
guidance and Ms Hilda Robinsonfor giving me the opportunity to do an internship
within the organization. For me it was a unique experience to work at L&T. It also
helped my interest in electronics and have new plans for my future career.
I also would like to thank Mr Usufe Shaikh, Mr Deepak Dongare, Ms Garima
Tandon, Ms Supriya Kushwaha and Ms Neha Nalwar under whom I have done my
work.
Furthermore I specially want to thank Ms Shweta Shetty and Mr Dereyk Dsouza
under whom I have done firmware testing with their guidance, patience and
openness they created an comfortable working environment.
At last I want to thank Mr Nivesh Vaze( trainee). We experienced great things
together and he have shown me beautiful part of their city.
3. SUMMARY
As an electronics engineering student I was interested in embedded systems,
microprocessors and microcontrollers. It was a great opportunity for me to do two
months internship in Electrical and Automation, Larsen and Toubro Ltd., Mumbai.
The Internship was concentrated on testing of switchgear for various protections. At
the beginning of the internship I had several learning goals regarding
microcontrollers and industry working style.
During my Internship I was under firmware team developing new microcontroller
based switchgear. My Internship started with some theoretical lessons in which I
read about switchgears, its principal, applications and types. Second week onwards
I was into the testing part. During testing I have learnt a lot from basic idea to the
differentstages of developmentof a product.
In conclusion, the internship was a useful experience.I have found out what my
strengths and weaknesses are; I gained new knowledge and skills and met many
new people.I achieved most of my learning goals.
At last this internship has given me new insights and motivation to pursue a career
in Electronics Engineering. To prepare myself for my future career I can improve
several things. I can work on my communication skills so that I am able to present
and express myself more confidently.I could perform certain tasks in research
better if I have more experience in the research methodologiesapplied in studies.
4. Internship Activities
I) Theoretical Study
There are always some basics we have to learn to work in a company or any other environment.
As I was in the Switchgear Design and Development Centre. There is a lot of new things to learn.
So I started by studying some basic fundamentals of switchgear before working on the actual
hardware.
Some of topics of my study are-
LV Systems
Contactors
Protection of LV Motors
Motor Starters
Air Circuit Breaker
Miniature Circuit Breaker (MCB)
Moulded Case Circuit Breaker (MCCB)
Different types of electrical faults
II) ALT Testing
ALT- AcceleratedLife Testing
ALT testing is done when the product is completed and tested under normal conditions. Then to
verify the durability of a product, environmental factors (such as Temperature, Humidity etc.) are
increased above the normal conditions and product is kept for particular time duration. After that
the product is again tested and results are matched with the previous results and variation is
noted.
III) Electronic trip testing
5. In this microcontroller based switchgear is tested for its trip time and various other related
features. There are two types of testing. First is primary testing can also be called as real testing in
which switchgear is tested in real conditions. The second is secondary testing can also be called
as ideal testing. My work was mainly on the secondary testing of switchgear. In this we pass
different parameters without any error and observe the results. Results should be same as per the
expectations otherwise firmware and hardware are checked and solution to there unexpected
results are searched and solved.
Weekly Overview of Internship Activities
Week 1 (13-18,June)
Theoretical study of switchgear
ALT testing of Switchgear in Overload, Short Circuit and Instantaneous.
Week 2 (20-25,June)
Tested Motor Switchgear in ground fault, Overload and Short Circuit and Measured their
trip time.
Week 3 (27 June- 2 July)
Tested advance switchgear in Under Voltage, Over Voltage and Unbalance. Measured trip
time on different conditions along with other features of switchgear.
Week 4 (4-9,July)
Tested advance switchgear in phase sequence, lag power, lead power, under frequency
and over frequency conditions. Measured trip time along with different other features of
switchgear.
Week 5 (11-16,July)
Concluded Under frequency and Over frequency testing.
Retested different errors in the firmware of switchgear.
Week 6 (18-23,July)
Tested advance switchgear in Residual Voltage.
Started the tested on breaker and verify its features.
6. Week 7(25-30,July)
Tested advance switchgear for energy acquisition and maximum demand.
Concluded the tests on breaker.
7. Conclusion
On the whole, this internship was a useful experience. I have gained new knowledge, skills and
met many new people. I achieved several of my learning goals.
I got insight into professional practice. I learned the different facets of working within a company. I
learnt a lot and hope the learning will help me shaping my future career.
The Internship was also good to find out my strengths and weaknesses. This helped me to define
what skills and knowledge I have to improve in the coming time.
At last this internship has given me new insights and motivation to pursue a career in electronics.
