3. WHERE DOES IT COME FROM?
• The name comes from the Goths, a Germanic tribe who invaded the
Romans.
• In the 17th century the English called Barbarians Goths.
• In the 18th century, it was considered an alternate way of creating
beauty and art.
• Goth is a term that refers not only for literature it also represent art
and architecture
• Horace Walpole wrote the first Gothic nove; The Castle of Otranato in
the 1700’s.

• A type of literature that forces people to deal with the problems
of society.
• A story that deals with supernatural elements and themes that
are considered forbidden.
• The setting must happen on a frontier, whether it be societal or
physical , such as the mind , space , the old west , pastures of
england and the forest.

considered “taboo”. Especially in Victorian society.
