instructions
1. Spend some time thinking about key tasks users
of your selected website will need to complete. Write
a list of those things. If needed, discuss ideas with a
classmate.
2. Select 3 questions and generate a scenario that
will walk a selected user through each. If you need a
review of this, you can watch:
http://tinyurl.com/user-test-krug
(if you have the suggested book, Don’t Make Me Think, you can
also review chapter 9)
3. Choose a tester, and schedule your test. This
person should:
• be from a demographic that would typically use
the site (if at all possible)
• have not used the particular website you are
testing in the past
• not be another student in this course
4. Get ready for the test:
• Determine your recording method (screencasing
software or video).
• Practice (be sure everything is working.)
• Fill out the script section of this assignment.
5. Conduct the test.
6. Write a short reflection on what you learned
(shortly after completing the test) and upload both
your reflection and the video to your student server
space in a zipped folder. (The reflection can be .txt,
.doc, or .pdf.)
Name the folder: lastname-usertest.zip
purpose
This assignment will help you
prepare for your redesign by
clarifying problem areas on the
website you selected.
grading

are thoughtful, your video quality is
clear and easy to understand, your
reflection shows a clear and careful
analysis of the results, and all are

assignment is incomplete or if one
or more parts of the assignment are
lacking in the level of thoughtfullness
and analysis required for full points
1-7.5pt range if the assignment is
incomplete and/or clearly lacking in
thoughtfulness, preparation, and/or
analysis
late work late assignments incur

including weekend days, after the 5th
day, zero credit is given
redesign usability test assignment
15pts, bring to class 02/23, Alicia will collect them on a flash drive
< gdes 2342 webDesign spring2015 />
1. Begin sitting in front of the computer, have your equipment ready, but do not open a browser yet.
2. Begin the screen cast, introduce the project, be sure you have their permission to record the tasks.
note: (Ask about recording in advance, but also reiterate at the beginning of the test.) If the user declines to
give permission, end the screen cast, delete the file, thank them for their time, and find a different user.
script:
I am taking a web design class and redesigning a website for my first assignment. In order to understand
problem areas on the current website, we are creating a short usability test. Do you mind if I take a video
recording and submit it as a part of the assignment? It is possible that some videos could be selected to
demonstrating user testing for later classes and students. Is that okay with you?
3. If participant agrees, explain the process.
script:
During this test I am going to ask you a series of questions designed to help me learn about the strengths and
weaknesses of the current website. If you have questions during the test please ask, but I may not be able to
answer them right away since I am interested in how someone uses this website without anyone sitting next to
them.
4. Get some basic information about the user.
script:
Before we begin, I’d like to ask two quick questions:
• What is your occupation?
• About how many hours per week do you think you spend using the internet and what does your typical
internet use consist of?
5. Thank them and begin the test.
script:
Let’s get started. (open the website in a browser) First, I’d like you to look at this page and tell me what you
think of the site? What does this organization do? What is it for? What do you think you’ll be able to find out
here? You can scroll, but please don’t click on anything yet.
6. Now work through your tasks.
script:
Okay, thank you for the feedback, now I’d like to work through a few specific tasks. As much as possible, please
think out loud as you complete these tasks. Tell me what you are thinking about, why you are making choices,
and how you feel as you are doing it.
