As a teacher, I have learned manyvaluable lessons in caring for children. Not only have I
learned the basic skills ofa teacher such as creating lesson plans and prep work for projects,
I have also acquired the ability to care for and teach children in a way that is most
advantageous for each of their individual personalities. Our center works with NAEYC, Parent
Aware, and Creative Curriculum to create the bestlearning opportunities for our families. I
have established connections with the children and their families, and through these
connections have learned how to bestteach each individual child.

This position provided me with the opportunity to work with some very special individuals who
were mentallydisabled. The residents in the home I worked in were all nonverbal and limited
in their abilities to care for themselves. The position taughtme to learn their different ways of
communication, as well as the individual preferences theyhad in terms ofhow to be cared for.
It also provided me with the opportunity to get to know each of them personally.
