2. What is the reasoning behind the creations
of copyright law? What are its impacts?
The reasoning behind the creation of Copyright Law is to promote the progress of
science and the useful arts. According to copyright.com their purpose is to create legal
protection for content creators through the assignment of specific rights to works that
qualify for it. Another of the main reasons behind copyright law is to provide a financial
benefit to copyright holders for their works, and to facilitate access to knowledge and
entertainment for the public.
3. Two works that are currently in the public domain in the US are:
• Ferris wheel
• Statue of Liberty
Two works that are still protected by copyright in the US are:
• Man on Fire – Movie (2004)
• Burning Love – Elvis Presley (1973)
Identify at least 2 works that are currently in the
public domain and 2 that are still protected by
copyright
4. What is your opinion? Do you think that the
work’s continued protection (or lack of it) is the
best interest of the author, society? Explain the
reasoning behind your opinion.
In my opinion, the first two works lack of protection has been good for both,
but mostly for society. I believe it is a benefit for the author because it has
helped make their creations well known and create a brand out of the work
they have done, the authors who created this tend to be remembered as the
times passes by with its creation than those whose works never get to be
promoted. But the benefit goes mostly for society because they have the
freedom to enjoy, commercialize and use these creations in any possible way.
On the other hand, the other two works continued protections is also a benefit,
but especially for the authors, because this means that nobody else gets to
get credit for what they have created themselves, also, and most importantly it
helps society be aware of who are the authors of such magnificent creations
and it helps promote the knowledge and history behind art.
5. Find a public domain story that
you can use to base a short film.
What story did you select?
I chose the story of Winter Dreams by Scott Fitzgerald, one of my favorite authors.
Why do you think it is in the public domain?
This story as well as most of his stories are in the public domain due to the copyright term of the
author’s life plus 75 years or less. The author passed away in 1940.
Describe the film you would create based on the story.
The film I would create based on this story would be a romantic/drama film based on the story of
Dexter, the main character and Judy, his winter dream. The film will have the same plot as the
written story. The story focuses on a man named Dexter Green, who was the son of a grocery store
owner and was not at all wealthy, he falls in love with a girl named Judy, who is wealthy and likes to
date different men at the same time. As he tries to forget about her, he meets a girl named Irene
who he wants to marry, but then Judy gets in the way once again and he breaks off the
engagement with Irene and starts seeing Judy again, but then she breaks his heart one more time.
Dexter decides to move back to New York, as he finds success in what he is doing, he is later told
by a mutual friend of him and Judy that she lost all his grace and beauty, as he understands that
his romantic view of them being together were gone.
6. Find music that you can use in
your film.
What song would you use?
The song I would use would be 1864 Beautiful Dreamer by Stephen Collins Foster.
Is the song in the public domain or copyrighted?
The song is in the public domain because any musical works published with a valid
Copyright Notice of 1922 or Earlier are in the public domain in the United States.
Would you use a specific recording or create a cover version?
I would make my own new version for the film.
What permissions do you need (if any)?
Since this song is in the public domain, the work can be re recorded and used
without permission and even file a new copyright for it.
8. Where did you find the image?
I found this image in Pixabay.com
Is it copyrighted or in the public domain?
The image is in the public domain.
What permissions do you need to use the image in your poster and from
whom?
Pixabay.com states that “All images on Pixabay are released into the Public
Domain under Creative Commons CC0. Therefore, the images can be modified
and may be used freely for any application - also commercially and in printed
format. Attribution in appreciated, but not required.”
The image I chose is suitable for your application and does not infringe any
rights for instance it freely to use in any possible way.
