2. Topic Summary
Literacy Based Learning Disabilities- Dyslexia & Dysgraphia
Prior to my coursework I had little to no knowledge about dyslexia and dysgraphia. As I asked my fellow
teachers I realized that a vast majority of my colleagues were unaware of these learning disabilities. 20%
of the population has dyslexia or some symptoms of dyslexia (International Dyslexia Association, 2018).
In numerous cases students with dyslexia also show signs of dysgraphia, a separate learning disability
(International Dyslexia Association, 2018). It is vital for educators to understand what dyslexia and
dysgraphia are and how they can support their students who struggle with these learning disabilities.
3. Statement of Relevance to Literacy Instruction
It is imperative for classroom teachers to have a basic understanding of learning disabilities that affect
their students. Dyslexia and dysgraphia are two of the most common learning disabilities. Since both
learning disabilities deal directly with literacy, educators need to be able to identify signs of dyslexia and
dysgraphia. In addition educators must know how to support students with these specific learning
disabilities.
4. Plan for Completion
Dyslexia and dysgraphia are complex learning disabilities. With that being said the classroom teacher
cannot be the only one supporting the student with a learning disability. For this project I will create a
resource tool for both educators and parents. This resource will provide insight into both learning
disabilities as well as implements for support.
5. How This Project Will Improve Teaching
As I mentioned before dyslexia and dysgraphia are not discussed on a daily basis. This project with help
teachers and parents to: identify symptoms of dyslexia or dysgraphia and implement research-based
strategies to strengthen the students ability to read and write.
