L The ltalian lJniversity System
The ltalian university system s organised in three cycles, accord ng to the Bologna structufe: the
ma n academic degrees are the Laurea(1st cycle) the Laurea l4agistrale (2nd cycle) and the
Dottorato di Ricerca(3rd cycle)-The system also offers other study programmes and related
qualifications
First cycle. Th s cycle consists excluslvely of Corsi d Laurea. These degree programmes provide
st!dents with an adequate command of genelal scientifc methods and contents as well as with
specific professional skllls. The general access requirement ls the ltalan school leaving qua ification
awarded after completron of 13 years of schooling and passing the relevant State examination;
comparable foreign qualificaUons may also be accepted. Admiss on to some degree courses may
be based on specific course requirements. The studies last 3 years. The Laurea is awarded to
studentswho have gained 180 ECTS credits (called Crediti Formativi Univercitar - CFU) and
sausfied allcurricular requirements, includlng the producton ofa finalwrltten paper of equ valent
final project. The Laurea gives access to the Corsl di Laurea l,4agistrale as well as to other 2nd
cycre sluoy prog€mmes.
Second cycle, The ma n degree programmes in this cycle are the Cofsl di Laurea [,4agistrale. They
provide educat on at an advanced level for the exercise of highly qualified activities in speclfic
areas. Access ls by a Laufea degree or a comparable foreign degree; admlssion is based on
specfic course requirements determ ned by single universit es. The studies last 2 years. The
Laurea Magistrale degree s awarded to students who have gained 120 ECTS/CFU cred ts and
satisfied allcurrcular requirements, including the production and public defence ofan o ginal
d ssertation. Some programmes (namely, those in dentistry, medlcine, veterinary medlcine
pharmacy, arch tecture, construction engineering/architecture, law, primary education) are defined
"s ngle cycle programmes" (Corsi a ciclo unico); for these programmes access is by the ltalian
school leavlng qualifcat on (or a comparable foreign qualification); admlssion ls based on entfance
exans. The studies last 5 yeafs (6 years and 360 ECTS/CFU credlts in the cases of med c ne and
dentistry). A Laurea l,4agistrale degree is awarded to students who have gained 300 ECTS/CFU
credits and satisfied all currcular requiremenis including the production and public defence ofan
original dissertat on- A Laurea [,4agistrale degree gives access to Corsi d] Dottorato di Ricerca as
well as to othef 3rd cycle siudy programmes.
Third cycle. The main degree programrnes in th s cycle are Corsi di Dottorato di Ricerca (research
doctorate programmes)t the students/young researchers enrolled in these programmes will acquire
rnethodologies for advanced scientilic research, w ll be trained in new technologies and will work in
reseafch laboratories, wherever appropriate. Access is by a Laurea Magistrale degree (or a
comparable foreign degree); admlssion is based on a compet tive exam; studies last ai leasi three
years and include the completion and publlc defence ofan origlnal research proiecl
Other programmes.
- Corsi dl Specralzzaz one . These are 3rd cycle programrnes intended to provide students with the
knowledge and skills required for the practice of highly qualified professions mainly in rnedical' clinjcal
and surglcal specialities. Admission is by a Laurea Nlagistrale degree (or by a cornperable foreign
degree);nd is based on a ompetjtive exam; studies may last from 2 (120 ECTS/CFucredlts) to 6
yeirsliOO ECTSICfU credits) depending on the dlscipline The final degree awarded is a Diploma di
Spec allzzazlone.
- Corsi di Master Univers tarjo d primo ]ivello 'These are 2nd cycle pfogrammes intended to pfovid

studentswlth fu rther spec a lizatio n or higher cont nLring educatjon studies after completion ofthe second
cyc e. Access is by a Laurea lvlagistrale degree (or a compa|able foreign degree); admiss on may be
subject to addltioFal requirements. Studres last at least 1 year (60 ECTS/CFU credits). The qualjficat on
awarded (Master universitario di secondo livello) does not give access to Corsi d Doltorato di Ricerca or
to any other 3rd cycle pfogramrnes slnce th s type of course does not belong to the gereral
requ rernents established at natronal level but i1 s offered under the autononrous respons b lity of each

Credits: degree courses aTe structured n cfed ts (Crediti Format v Universitarl -CFU). Un versity
cred ts are based on the workload students need in order to achieve the expected learning
outcomes. Each credit corfesponds to 25 hourc of student wofkload includjng ndependent st!dy.
The avefage workload of a full time student is conventionally fixed ai 60 credits per year. Th!s the
CFU fu ly coinclde with ECTS credits.
Classes of Degree Coursesi all degree programmes of Lautea and Laufea Mag strale sharing
general educational objectives are grouped into "classes". In developing the specific learning
outcomes of single programmes, Univers ties have to comply wth some nat onal requirements for
each class concerning the types (and corresponding amourt ofcredits) ofteach ng learr ng
activities to be ncluded. Degrees be onging to the same class have the same legal value.
Academic Titles: Those who receive the LauTea are enUtled to be called 'Dottore" the holders of a
Laurea [,4agistrale have a right to the utle of'Dottore [,4a9]stra e", the Dottorato di ricerca confers the
title of'Dottore di Ricefca' or 'PhD'.
