Excavation on the North-Eastern Slope of
the Palatine Hill, Rome, Italy. Director: Dr
Clementina Panella.
Main role: As a supervisor of
Archaeological documentation, I had to
manage a team of graphics and illustrators
on site. Besides producing drawings and
supervising the staff, my main role was to
connect my department to other branches
of the research team in order to have an
understanding of the whole excavation
project and general tasks. The Palatine Hill
is a very complex and crucial site for
understanding a number of occupational
phases, from the early stages of urban
formation to the decline of the empire, in
the very heart of Rome. Decision making
was an essential skill for that role, since
time and financial resources were
particularly limited. High level efficiency
was essential.

Tasks: Create permanent records of
artefacts, archaeological sites and
buildings within the broad field of research
archaeology in Rome, Italy.
Main Skills: Digital Photogrammetry; 3D
Modelling; Digital Illustration; AutoCAD;
ArcGIS.
Main Software: ArcGIS, Adobe Photoshop,
Illustrator, Agistoft Photoscan.

b. Specialist Archaeological Illustrator.
Main role: create permanent records of artefacts,
archaeological sites and buildings within the field of
British commercial archaeology.
Main Skills: Digital Photogrammetry; 3D Modelling;
Digital Illustration; AutoCAD; ArcGIS.
Main Software: ArcGIS, Adobe Photoshop,
Illustrator, Agistoft Photoscan.
Description: Extremely high level of competence
and time efficiency. A large number of digital
drawings and 3D Models have to be produced in a
limited amount of time available. The role is
designed for an autonomous, self-sufficient
specialist who is highly experienced not only in
archaeology, but also in coding languages, graphic
design and 3D modelling. As part of the Digital
Team of Border Archaeology, individual tasks has to
fit in the broader picture of the whole company’s
priorities, which varies from financial and human
resources, deadlines and secondary urgencies;
therefore, communication within the Digital Team
and with other branches of the company is
essential. Daily and weekly meetings with Directors
and Site Managers allow to have a continuous
understanding of ongoing field work and post-
excavation matters, and to reassess priorities and
tasks accordingly.
Subsidiary tasks include experimenting new
technologies, assessing potential of nuanced
approached for improving quality and financial
outcomes, and developing new methods for
archaeological field work and digital documentation.
