1.1. Introduction to Technical Textile
Textile industry is normally considered as an industry which fulfills the demand
like climate protection, increase in the aesthetic sense, over and all apparel need
& this sector is then well known as traditional textile or general textile.
On the other hand, due to human demand, textile has been molded with new
technology for specific use such as human protection from extreme situation etc.
& this sector has been given many names but the most common are technical
textile, industrial textile, and functional textile.
So basically textile can be classified  into two main sectors according to its
application & they are –
a) Traditional textile and
b) Technical textile.
1.2. Definition of Technical Textiles
Textile Institute Manchester defines technical textiles in the following words:
"Materials and products intended for end-uses other than non-protective clothing,
household furnishing, and floor covering, where the fabric or fibrous component is
selected principally but not exclusively for its performance and properties as
opposed to its aesthetic or decorative characteristics" (Textile Terms and
Definitions, TI, Manchester, 10theEd.)
Another definition of technical textiles by Encyclopedia Universal is cited by
Nemoz (2001)
"Technical textiles are materials meeting high technical and quality requirements
(mechanical, thermal, electrical, durability...) giving them the ability to offer
technical functions" (p. 3). There is a no big difference in the above mentioned two
definitions of technical textile. A third definition is by Memon and Zaman (2007),
"Technical textiles as defined as textile materials and products manufactured
primary for their technical performance and functional properties, rather than for
their aesthetic and decorative it  characteristics"(p.120).

1.3. Classification of Technical Textiles
Messe Frankfurt divides technical textiles into following twelve categories:
I. Agrotech
II. Hometech
III. Oekotech
IV. Buildtech
V. Indutech
VI. Packtech
VII. Clothtech
VIII. Meditech
IX. Protech
X. Geotextiles

2.1 Introduction about the project
The term medical textile literally means textile used for medical purposes. Textile
apart from being a vital part human life is long since been used in medical field,
though the term has been coined very recently. Textile materials have wide range
properties such as flexibility, elasticity, strength etc. Textiles used for medical
purposes should be non-allergic, noncarcenogenic, non-toxic, and antistatic in
nature, optimum fatigue endurance, biocompatibility, flame proof, dyes must be
non-irritant. An important and growing part of the textile industry is the medical
and related health care and hygiene sectors. The extent of the growth is due to the
constant improvements and innovations in both textile technology and medical
procedures.
In the present scenario, Medical textile market is totally saturated with nonwoven
products today. Nonwovens, because of their easily modifiable properties and
excellent performance have become indispensable in this field. Nonwovens are

developed to impart special properties to product. In order to be competitive today,
nonwovens producers must show high productivity at low cost. At the same time,
the market demands higher quality. In the medical and sanitary domain the use of
appropriate fibers is an important condition for obtaining the required properties.
The Medical Textiles includes vast range of applications viz. adhesive tapes,
bandages, beddings, blankets, castings, diapers, dressings, eye pads, gauzes,
protective clothing's, sutures, surgical covers, surgical clothing's, swabs, supports,
sanitary products, hospital gowns etc. It also finds application in extra-corporeal
devices like artificial kidney, liver, heart & mechanical lung, ligaments, vascular
grafts, heart valves, blood vessels, artificial skins etc. Range of natural fibers and
biodegradable polymers with non-biodegradable synthetic polymers is being
utilized for developing new products in medical textiles. Since the medical textile
applications are directly related to the life of human being, those are required to
undergo stringent testing and hygienic criteria, which led to innovative use of
variety of fibers and lot of developments, took place in this area.
2.2 Medical Textiles:
Based on applications the medical textile can be broadly categorized as follows,
Personal health care/hygienic products: Bedding, clothing, surgical
gowns, Cloths, wipes surgical curves, surgical hosiery, diapers, etc.
Non-implantable material or medical dressings & auxiliaries: wound
dressing, bandage, plasters, gauge, lint wadding etc.
Implantable materials: sutures, vascular grafts, artificial ligaments, and
artificial joints.
Extra corporal devices: Artificial kidneys, liver & lungs etc.

The nonwovens are used for the given applications in different forms. Wound
care was and still is the primary use for medical and surgical nonwovens.
Nonwovens find applications in a variety of products viz. absorbent pads,
incontinence products, apparel for patients and staff. Baby diapers, bed linen and
blankets, burn dressings, gowns, disposable underwear, dressings, drug delivery
devices, face masks, filter media, nasal strips, pillows, shoe covers, sponges,
sutures, tissue scaffolds, towels, wraps etc.

3. Sales and Marketing
3.1 World Medical Nonwoven fabric Market and Competition
The disposable medical nonwoven market is projected to reach $20 billion by
2017, according to a comprehensive report from market researcher Global Industry
Analysts (GIA), San Jose, CA1. Growth is being influenced by demographics, as
well as three significant health conditions—obesity, diabetes and an aging
population. These health trends typically increase surgical procedures, and hence
the demand for disposable medical products (e.g., protective apparel). There is an
additional influence on sector growth arising from the demands of developing
world economies where there is an ongoing overhaul not only in healthcare per se,
but also in the expectations of a system and the ability to finance a higher level of
care. These global factors offset the potential reduced usage of nonwovens from
medical advancements related to natural orifice as well as non-invasive procedures.
Asia Pacific is fast growing in its use of nonwovens. China, in particular, is in the
midst of overhauling its approach to healthcare, supported by its buoyant economy.
The penetration of single use medical nonwovens is linearly related to the
country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and is a helpful, leading indicator for the
market. GDP in China expanded 1.8% in the first quarter of 2012 over the previous
quarter, yet as such represented a three-year low position.
Currently, although the manufacturing footprint for nonwovens is one that
straddles many continents, China is now the leading global exporter of nonwoven

China. “China has a strong converting industry that is prepared to supply finished

1.3.1. Egyptian Medical Nonwoven Market
Egypt is one of the biggest importer of nonwoven fabric and the following table
showing the total amount of money paid for medical nonwoven fabrics which were
imported in 2015.
Weight Price in $ Amount in Kg
Lower than 20 gm/ m^2 31,753,323 12,169,737
20 to 70 gm/ m^2 13,050,946 4,760,696
Higher than 70 gm/

Total 60,033,524 20,546,706
IF we compared 2016 with 2012 as example we will find that there is a huge increase
in nonwoven consumption in Egyptian market. In 2012 the total money was about
36 million $ and in 2016 was about 60 million $. The Global trend will increase
dramatically in the recent few years and we expect to reach 100 million $ by 2019.
