India is said to waste about 40 per cent of the food it grows. Not because it is willingly allowed
to go waste, but because of lack of proper storage and technologies.
The World Food India 2017 (WFI), held recently, was an effort to promote the food processing
industry. It was a gateway to the Indian food economy and an opportunity to showcase,
connect and collaborate for the Indian and international businesses and investors interested in
the food processing.
The event, organised by the Ministry of Food Processing Industries, Government of India, was
India's largest-ever gathering of investors, manufacturers, producers, food processors, policy
makers and organisations from the global food ecosystem. The event was organised to provide
opportunities to both investment and trade in the food processing sector for leading Indian and
international companies.
Encompassing the entire spectrum, from production to consumption, WFI looked at creating a
better sourcing environment, thus, enabling higher returns on investments for farmers,
generation of employment and fostering entrepreneurial opportunities.
Reducing wastage
Better sourcing ensures that the food that is excess can be given to the needy and the less
fortunate. Extending help to NGOs like The Akshaya Patra Foundation by channeling the healthy
food can ensure that the food reaches the deserving. Donating to Akshaya Patra can also give
you tax exemption in India. The expo, though for promoting the food processing sector, was an
opportunity to understand ways to reach the best cooked food to the children in the farthest of
schools.
The lessons on the extent of food wastage at the expo or WFI is a right means to give a lesson
to people on how not to waste food and thus make people aware of the fact that there are
people who can be helped by giving them the preserved food which otherwise would have
gone waste.
Donating towards food
By donating towards food one can help feed many a needy people. But, channeling them the
right way and to the target group is a challenge, and so is preserving them. Thus comes into
play the efforts of NGOs like Akshaya Patra that has access to the newest technologies to
preserve the food in the best possible ways and also ensure that the children get fresh food
every day at school in their mid-day meals.
The donations made for the school lunch programme of Akshaya Patra are considered tax
deductible donations. Hence, one not only gets to help the needy, which will make you happy,
but would also be eligible for tax exemptions.

For those who have dedicated their lives to helping the needy, especially children, would have
had the expo as an eye opener. It would have given them insights on what all things are
possible to avoid wastage of food.
But, there is a cost involved in setting up the right infrastructure. That is when charity
donationscan play a major role in ensuring that you are able to get the food to the target
group, fresh and also with enhanced taste.
Khichdi – National Food
During the event, Khichdi, took a center stage. It was declared the National Food of India.
Khichdi forms an important dish in the menu served by The Akshaya Patra Foundation to its
beneficiaries. The Foundation that believes in serving nutritious meals to its beneficiaries
