Coastal Processes Assessment and Marina Design, EL-Sallume, Egyptian North coast.
EL-Sallume new marina is a proposed project in Egyptian North Coast that aims to provide a unique experience through linking the marina with the Exterior Oases corridor.
The project consisted of four stages, The first was Metocean study including data collection, data analysis and spectral wave modelling using Mike21 SWs. The second was detailed design of marine structures. Third stage was estimating the cost of the project (BOQ). Finally, environmental impact assessment (EIA)

MetOcean Data Collection/ Analysis
A– Data Collection
A.1– Meteorological/ Wind Data
In Order to Assist the Wave Climate in/ around the mentioned region, it’s required to investigate the sur-
rounding wind field that cause generation of short crest wind-waves. Wind hourly-based parameters
(velocity components u and v) were extracted as wind records for the previous 40-year from ECMWF-
ERA5 Platform at location (25.27 Long, 31.63 Lat) in figure (1), and got verified from DHI Data Portal as
shown in figure (2)
A.2– Oceanic/ wave Data
In respect of robust simulation of wave transformation/ propagation , not only wind data collection is a must
but also offshore-wave data . Offshore waves hourly-based parameters (significant height, peak period and
wave mean direction) were estimated based on the wind-generated waves analytical formulations, which is
SPM1984, that approach tests the wave formation into two regimes (Fetch Limited formulation or Fully De-
veloped Seas formulation), based on the storm’s parameters such as fetch length, storm duration and wind
speed. Hence, the following wave climate was estimated along the offshore boundary to get imposed on that
open/ wave-maker boundaries of the model, at location (25.27 Long, 31.63 Lat) figures (3&4).
A.3– Tidal Data
Tidal variation/ tidal harmonic constituents were collected and got analyzed, in purpose of conducting ap-
propriate estimation of the design water level, moreover adjusting the sea-bed levels to one of the tidal da-
tums whether MWL or CD to be ready for the model depth interpolation, see data and sources in figures
(5&6).
A.4– Hydrographic/ Bathymetric data
After reviewing some sources of bathymetric data, it was concluded that, the most reliable ocean-bed levels
with suitable resolution was the digitized Navionics Sonar Chart data (on behalf of admiralty charts), shown
in figures (7&8)
Long-term Data Analysis
A– EVA/ Extreme Value Analysis
The statistics of long-term prediction of wind/wave requires that the individual data points used in the sta-
tistical analysis be statistically independent. Hence any hourly record depends very much on the record of
the previous hours and hence the theoretical condition of statistical independence is not met. Hence, in or-
der to produce independent data points, only storms should be considered. The commonly used method to
separate wind/waves is called Peak Over Threshold (POT) analysis. A threshold wind stress of 9.0 m/s was
selected for the UA hourly values. The Weibull distribution was used as explained by William Kamphuis
for the extreme wave analysis where the probability of exceedance Q is expressed by:
The data was sorted from the largest to the smallest values and ranked from 1 to the number of POT values
(N). The value of Q is determined from m/(N+1) where m is the rank. The parameter W is calculated ac-
cording to:

A best fit is determined for the values of Hs
against W, figure(9). The parameters γ and β are
determined from the best fit line. Finally, the wind
stresses for different return periods (25, 50, 75 and
100 yrs.) were determined for each 22.5o
/sector,
neglecting the directions which coming from the
land, table (1).

Corresponding wave height values of the investigated return period wind stresses had been estimated based
on SPM1984 metric formulation and had go examined case by case if whether it was fetch limited or fully
developed seas, those formulations are shown below. The examined return periods Hs’s has been tabulated
below, in table (1).
B2– Wave Peak Period/ Tp
Accordingly, waves peak period had been estimated based on conducting the previous criteria, but using the
peak period formulations which are shown below. The examined 50 years) return periods Tp’s has been
tabulated below, table (2).

MIKE21– SW Model Building
A– Generating Computational Mesh
In order to approach the best simulation of waves transformation and to obtain resulted wave maps with the best ac-
curacy and resolution, it was necessary to conduct the computational mesh with a suitable mesh element’s size
which can cover the narrowest entrances within the domain. Not only the mesh element size was dominating the
generation process but also reaching to that resolution by the minimum number of mesh nodes to reduce the run-
ning time, is a privilege. Achieving those criteria (obtaining the required resolution with minimal number of mesh
nodes) has been done by nesting options/ properties during mesh generation process, taking into consideration the
appropriate smoothness rations within the consecutive elements sizes. Nesting technique is well represented in fig-
ure (1).
B– Boundaries Types Selecting
The outer mesh nodes were set as boundary nodes and divided into two types, the three open boundaries (North, West and
East) set to wave-maker boundaries, the Southern boundary was set to land boundary as shown in figure (2).

Nearshore wave rose presented in figure
(5) show that northwest direction is still
the prevailing wave direction.
This consistent with offshore wave rose,
and also reasonable because there is no
dramatic change in bathymetry.
Nearshore wave rose shows that there is
no wave height greater than 3.2 meter
which will be used later in design depth
of navigation channel.
