This document provides information about the Usahwira Scholarship Program at Africa University and encourages churches and groups to partner together to fund scholarships. The Usahwira Scholarship allows for a "beautiful friendship" where donors can support students' education, equipping them to become leaders in their communities in Africa. Suggested events for fundraising include Usahwira banquets highlighting African culture and a Beautiful Friendship Day during Sunday worship. Funding a four-year scholarship costs under $6,000 per year and covers tuition, housing, meals and insurance for students.

“Education is the most powerful weapon
which you can use to change the world.”
— Nelson Mandela
In the Shona language, (spoken by the majority
of the people of Zimbabwe), Usahwira means
“a beautiful friendship”. At Africa University,
it describes a profoundly impactful relationship
through which a student has the opportunity
to get an education that equips him or her
to change the world.
Since opening in 1992, Africa University has
graduated more than 6,200 women and men
who are change leaders in African communities.
By becoming part of Usahwira, a relationship
will be built, making a real difference in a young
person’s life.

Beautiful Friendship Venues
Usahwira Banquets
Plan a program around a banquet theme that
highlights a particular region or country in
Africa and one of the four areas of focus of
e United Methodist Church. Make the event
fun by presenting an excellent speaker as well as
showcasing African art, memorabilia, and music.
Beautiful Friendship Day

University story—using African music/drama,
encouraging African dress, and featuring a special

Africa University advisors, ambassadors and staff will
work with you to plan and execute exciting events to
engage supporters and help you fund your Usahwira
Scholarship.
You can invest in a Usahwira Scholarship as:
• An individual
• A local church
• A group of churches partnering together
• A district
• An organization, business, fraternity, or sorority, etc.
To begin your beautiful friendship, you’ll need to
commit to providing an annual scholarship for four
consecutive years. One year of undergraduate study at
Africa University currently costs just under $6,000, and
that covers tuition, medical insurance, and on-campus
housing and meals. You may send your gift to the
university on a semester or annual basis or as a lump
sum covering all four years of an undergraduate
program.
