3. HWY 500 million dollar project – largest reconstruction in WI to add 4 lane traffic in order to meet the demands of the future Increased accidents and congestion How do we lighten traffic? A study released by the Metropolitan Planning Council states that:Traffic congestion in the Chicago area costs $7.3 billion a year in lost time and wasted fuel, almost double previous projections ... [It] prompted calls for reinvestment in mass transit and road-expansion projects before the problem worsens.
4. Carpool Facts from Every Monday Matters Only 10.2% of workers rideshare. 45.3 cents per mile is the average cost to drive a car due to fuel, maintenance, tires, depreciation, and insurance. $2,174 can be saved annually by each person in a 2-person, 40-mile roundtrip rideshare. 12,000 gallons of gasoline would be saved each year for every 100 people who paired up into a daily rideshare. 20 pounds of CO2 is produced by burning 1 gallon of gasoline. A 10% nationwide increase in transit ridership would save 135 million gallons of gasoline a year. 34% of roads are in poor or mediocre conditions due to heavy usage and lack of proper repairs. Save your car, the roads, and your tax dollars.
6. Why Share? Gas is really expensive. Wear & tear costs more than gas. Driving is stressful, especially in winter. Socializing and sense of community. Takes vehicles off the road. Helps you, helps someone else.
9. Site Tutorial Test drive the site- Ease of use and access - Setup available time – utilize park and rides Carbon calculator Preferences and safety Test sites at AHS- Clinics, NHP, standard hour employees Goals of the program- 100 participants (once a month, week, or day)- Compete with success stories of local companies
11. Energy Facts What is a Watt?- standard unit of power- a 60W bulb burns 60 watts an hour when on- 60 watts = burning 205 wooden matches- Kilowatt is 1,000 watts, thus a kilowatt hour (kWh) is 1,000 watts in an hour. - The average home takes 45 kWh a day for its energy needs What is a Therm?- unit of heat for measuring natural gas- 1 therm = 29.3 kilowatt hours- the equivalent of burning 100 cubic feet of gas
12. What is Energy Stewards? It is a web-based platform that makes energy improvement efforts easy to understand, engaging participants to take action to reduce financial and environmental costs. Allows us to see energy performance of various facilities with a level of standardization in the form an Energy Intensity Score (Electrical + Gas Usage/Square Footage of facility). The lower the score, the more efficient use of energy in the building. Benchmarking tool – Hospital + Clinic comparison within organization, or across the country. Energy Stewards
13. Making the Grade EUI: Energy Utilization Index = kBtu/ft2/yr (Annual kWh X 3.413) =_____kBtu + (Annual Therms X 100) =_____kBtu Total Annual Energy =_____kBtu
15. Triplets Aren’t Always Identical 3 LEED Affinity Clinic Buildings - Identical in design and construction, yet variable performance. What does this mean?
16. Take ActionMercy Medical Center We believe in 3 necessary ingredients to change any system: Will, Ideas, and Execution (reference: Tom Nolan, Associates in Process Improvement, 2003). Energy Stewards™ helps EXECUTION of effective energy management—by making actions visible and available to many people via the web, organizing key IDEAS in the Action Table, and can build up WILL when you evaluate results (energy performance), all in a way that is intended to promote friendly competition.
17. Discussion How do we communicate this information in a meaningful way? How can I contribute to the energy consumption in the building I work in? Can I see this type of information for my home? What does it mean to be Energy Star Awarded?
18. BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE…. It is necessary to make courageous decisions that reflect knowing how to re-create a strong alliance between man and the earth. A decisive “yes” to the protection of creation is necessary, and a firm commitment to reverse those tendencies that run the risk of bringing about situations of unstoppable degradation. Pope Benedict XVI
