Global markets at a glance
Asian markets were lost for direction on Wednesday after a
reading on Chinese growth held up better than many had
feared, only for data on retail sales and industrial output to
disappoint. The mixed bag was mirrored in the market re-
action with Chinese shares edging higher while commodity
currencies such as the Australian dollar took a hit from
signs of softer demand. Shanghai stocks wavered around
flat before rising 0.25 %. MSCI's broadest index of Asia-
Pacific shares outside Japan was off 0.2 %, while Japan's
Nikkei was all but flat.
Wall Street Update
The Dow and S&P 500 ended higher on Tuesday, helped by
energy stocks and quarterly earnings reports that topped
modest expectations following worries about a strong dol-
lar. The DJI average rose 59.66 points, or 0.33 %, to end at
18,036.7. The S&P 500 gained 3.41 points, or 0.16 %, to
2,095.84 and the Nasdaq Composite dropped 10.96 points,
or 0.22 %, to 4,977.29, with Apple down 0.43 %. After the
bell, Intel Corp forecast revenue broadly in line with Wall
Street's low expectations and signaled a hefty cut in capital
expenditures this year, sending its shares up 2.6 %.
The benchmark S&P 500 posted five new 52-week highs
and one new low; the Nasdaq Composite recorded 74 new
highs and 32 new lows. About 5.8 billion shares changed
hands on US exchanges, below the 6.1 billion daily average
for the month to date, according to BATS Global Markets.
Previous day Roundup
The market gained strength in last couple of hours of trade
on Monday with the equity benchmarks closing at more
than one month high ahead of January-March quarter
earnings. The 30-share BSE Sensex closed above the 29000-
mark, up 165.06 points at 29044.44, the highest level since
March 5. The 50-share NSE Nifty reclaimed 8800 level,
climbing 53.65 points to end at 8834, supported by capital
goods, FMCG, telecom, select oil and technology stocks.

COMMODITY ROUNDUP
Gold mostly stayed under pressure last week, extending its
losses from near one month highs as traders eyed the latest
FOMC meeting minutes. “Several” Federal Reserve officials
thought that the US central bank would be able to raise in-
terest rates in June, according to minutes from the March
meeting. Worries over Indian demand also kept sentiments
under check. Several Federal Reserve policymakers said last
month the central bank is likely to raise its benchmark inter-
est rate in June but "others" said the move will probably
occur "later in the year," according to minutes of the Fed's
March17-18 meeting.
Steel imports rose 71 per cent in 2014-15 to 9.31 mn tonnes
(mt), when its exports suffered a setback of eight per cent
to 5.5 mt, thanks to structural problems and tepid demand
in target markets. The industry has made many representa-
tions to the government, for protection from imports.
Japan's aluminum stocks at main ports in the end of March
have reached a new high. The total quantity of the alumi-
num stock totaled 457,000 in March, up by 0.8% from the
previous month. The country's imports of aluminum ingots
totaled 1.698 million tons in 2014, up by 16% year on year.
MCX Crude oil futures could open positively yesterday in
the evening session as the global prices are showing some
promising signs. Crude-oil futures extended its recent gains
on ideas that US shale oil production has peaked. Oil stayed
supported yesterday even as the US stocks corrected fol-
lowing a drilling productivity report from the US energy de-
partment which showed that oil production from the seven
shale regions is expected to fall by 57,000 barrels a day in
May from April levels. The commodity continued to hold
onto its gains amid falling stocks in Asia and Europe.
However, strength in US dollar finally took a toll and oil
eased at the start of European trades. WTI Crude tested
highs near $53 per barrel and currently trade at $52.19per
barrel, up 28 cents per barrel on the day. MCX Crude oil fu-
tures for April registered strong gains yesterday, rising for a
third session. The counter ended at Rs 3273 per barrel, up
Rs 53 per barrel on the day after testing highs above Rs
3300 per barrel in intraday moves.

Cardamom futures slipped on reports of favorable weather
in major growing belts amid strong arrivals. The MCX carda-
mom for the May delivery settled the day at Rs 855.40,
down 1.79% over last close. Cardamom April futures surged
near Rs 1,300 per 1 kg during second week of January, on
the back of strong export demand amid projected lower
crop in the current season. The counter slipped on recent
rainfall in the major growing belts and prices slipped under
Rs 850 mark. The counter settled the day at Rs 855.40,
down 1.79% over last close and the open interest added
112 tonnes to 1,331 tonnes, indicating short selling.
Most spices traded on a positive note in the past month on
good domestic demand and worries about lower output
due to untimely rain in major growing areas for cumin seed,
coriander, black pepper and turmeric. While jeera (cumin)
recorded a jump of 12.6%, coriander and turmeric surged
29 per cent and 5.8 per cent, respectively, in the futures
market. In the spot market, spices moved in line with fu-
tures. Jeera, coriander and turmeric witnessed a jump of
7.25 per cent, 29.3 per cent and two per cent, respectively.
Jeera zoomed market due to weak supplies in local mandies
coupled with strong export demand. The NCDEX Jeera for
the April delivery ended the day at Rs 17,905, up Rs 1,010,
or 5.98%. Jeera futures jumped to new high of Rs 17,905
level on bargain buying last few days. The counter ended
the day at Rs 17,905, up Rs 1010, or 5.98% and the open

CURRENCY MARKET UPDATES:
The Indian rupee opened flat at 62.33 per dollar on Mon-
day against 62.31 Friday.
Dollar rose near its one month high of 1.0520 against the
Euro yesterday and is approaching the same mark today
as traders eye the Greece debt scenario. The dollar
nursed broad losses early on Wednesday, having snapped
six straight sessions of gains after retail sales data failed
to meet the market's lofty expectations. The dollar was
down 0.75 % against a basket of major currencies, leaving
it with a gain of nearly 10 % so far in 2015. A stronger dol-
lar tends to hurt profits for US multinationals.
RBI said on Monday it accepted all 27 bids for 81.49 bn
rupees ($1.31 bn) at its two-day repo auction, through
which it injects liquidity into the banking system. Indian
banks' refinancing with RBI falls to 62.12 billion rupees.
Indian banks' cash balances with RBI fall to 3.47 trillion
rupees.
Sterling fell to session lows on Tuesday after data showing
that the U.K. avoided slipping into negative inflation in
March, but consumer prices remained flat due to cheaper
food and energy costs.
Oil prices rose in early Asian trading on Wednesday after
signs of a dip in U.S. production. U.S. Treasury yields fell
on Tuesday after data showed that retail sales rose in
March at a slower pace than expected, adding to bets the
Federal Reserve is unlikely to increase interest rates in
June.
The euro touched fresh two-year lows against the broadly
higher yen on Tuesday as the as the European Central
Bank's bond buying stimulus program continued to pres-
sure the single currency lower.
