 The government has procured 350.28 lakh tonnes of rice in the current
marketing season so far, according to official data. The rice procurement
target for the current season (October-September) has been fixed at 375 lakh
tonnes. In the previous year, total rice procurement had surpassed the target
at 381.06 lakh tonnes. Procurement is undertaken by state-run Food
Corporation of India (FCI) and state agencies for the central pool to meet the
requirement of food security law. Rice is purchased at the minimum support
price (MSP). According to the FCI's latest data, rice purchase in Punjab has
reached 176.61 lakh tonnes in October-December of this season. The state
has already surpassed its target of 115 lakh tonnes. In Haryana, rice
procurement has reached 59.20 lakh tonnes, exceeding the target of 30 lakh
tonnes given for the entire season.
 Indonesia, the world's second-largest sugar importer, is exploring the
possibility of buying raw sugar from India, where a bumper cane crop has
raised fears of a glut of the sweetener. India, too, is keen to export a bigger
quantity, preferably through barter trade, according to industry executives. A
delegation from Indonesian Sugar Association met representatives of the
Indian sugar industry in New Delhi recently. "As India will have excess sugar
production next year, Indonesian industry is keen to import sugar from India,"
said Prakash Naiknavare, managing director of National Federation of Co-
operative Sugar Factories. "For India, 2018-19 will be the year of highest-ever
sugarcane and sugar availability. The ratoon crop that will be harvested in
2018-19 is growing very well in Maharashtra, Karnataka, etc," said
Naiknavare. Meanwhile, the Indian sugar industry has already started
brainstorming over various policy measures that would be required to manage
the excess production, and exports is one of the measures being considered.
 The total area under Mustard/ Rapeseed in the state has increased from
32,000 hectares to 42,000 hectares this year, which is an increase of around
24% over last year, according to latest figures from Punjab Agricultural
department. But experts said that this increase is not sufficient and Punjab
needs to give at least two lakh hectares under such oil seed varieties,
including Canola oil, which would also help the state to embark upon the
much needed diversification path to break the wheat-paddy crop cycle. The
figures of Punjab Agricultural department revealed that the mustard/
rapeseed mustard crop, covered around 1.58 lakh hectares area under it in
early 90s which came down to 1.20 lakh hectares in 1995-96.
 Even though the government has taken a number of steps to reign in the
sliding price of pulses, agriculture experts claim these prices are a mere
manifestation of the demand and supply situation prevailing in the country.
Trading sharply above the government’s Minimum Support Price (MSP) in
September, almost all varieties have since declined by up to 50%, because
of increase in sowing area of the rabi season crop and changes in
government policies in favour of trade.
 The government has procured 35.028 million tonnes of Rice in the
current marketing season so far, according to official data. The Rice
procurement target for the current season (October-September) has been
fixed at 37.5 million tonnes. In the previous year, total Rice procurement
had surpassed the target at 38.106 million tonnes. Procurement is
undertaken by state-run Food Corporation of India (FCI) and state agencies
for the central pool to meet the requirement of food security law. Rice is
purchased at the minimum support price (MSP).
