Bengal government will take help of electronic nose (E-nose) technology to
determine the quality of aromatic rice and pulse varieties that the state
government buys from farmers to be sold at - Sufal Bangla- fair-price outlets
across the state.. The E-nose technology will be introduced at the
government's state-of-the-art quality control laboratory in Singur to ensure
the quality of aromatic rice varieties. A senior official of the state agricultural
department explained that different varieties of aromatic rice have different
aromas - for example, Kalo Nunia has a mild smell while Gobindobhog is
known for its strong smell. "What was done till now by humans would, to
ensure uniformity, soon be taken over by technology," he said. Another
technology named Pulse View will be introduced at the Singur laboratory for
assessing the quality of pulse. According to the agricultural department
officals, vegetables, rice and pulses will all be tested in the laboratory before
being sent to the Sufal Bangla outlets in the city.
Dairy cooperatives increased milk procurement by 20.4% in November from
a year earlier, the agriculture ministry said. The price of milk procured in that
month was 4.7% higher, the ministry said. Stocks of skimmed milk powder
were at 1.16 lakh tonnes and are expected to touch 2 lakh tonnes by the end
of March. Domestic prices of skimmed milk powder and ghee rose by about
9% and 19%, respectively, in November. Gujarat (Amul), Karnataka (Nandini),
Bihar (Sudha), Haryana (Vita), Punjab (Verka) and Uttar Pradesh (PCDF-Parag)
have some of the largest dairy cooperatives in the country. The government
has set a target of 255 million tonnes of milk production by 2022 as part of
efforts to double the income of farmers, the ministry said. The share of milk
procurement by cooperatives is to be doubled to 20% of milk production by
2022.
After witnessing a dip in Cotton produce due to pest attack and
unseasonal rains, Telangana is bracing itself for lower production of Chilli,
another major crop in the state. Chilli crop area in Telangana, the largest
Chilli producing state in India, has reduced by 20% so far in 2017-18
season, according to latest data from the State horticulture department.
According to the data, Chilli was sown in an area of 12.43 lakh hectares in
Telangana last year, which gave a yield of about 48.29 lakh tonnes.
The National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India
(Nafed) has procured a record 6.57 lakh tonnes of Groundnut so far from
Gujarat in the current kharif marketing season. The government's purchases
have benefited an estimated 3.39 lakh farmers, with the government
shelling out close to Rs 3,000 crore. NAFED began procurement on
October 25, just two days after dates for the Gujarat polls were announced.
The kharif Groundnut marketing season begins in late-October and goes on
till early-February. The state government had declared a bonus of Rs 50
over the Centre’s MSP of Rs 4,450 a quintal, taking the effective
procurement rate to Rs 4,500.
The International Cotton Advisory Committee (ICAC) has increased its
forecast for Cotton prices – but not by enough to suggest it sees a
continuation of the strong run in values which marked 2017. The
intergovernmental group pegged at 74 cents a pound its forecast for Cotton
prices, as measured by the Cotlook A index of physical values in 2017-18,
on an August-to-July basis. That represented an upgrade of 2 cents a pound
on the previous forecast, and reflected a downgrade to the forecast for
world cotton stocks, on a lower estimate for Pakistani output. However, the
forecast signals an expectation that prices will fall from current levels, with
the Cotlook A on Tuesday at 89.35 cents a pound, and having averaged
some 83 cents a pound so far in 2017-18.
