The document analyzes 3 photographs and asks questions to understand their historical context. Photograph 1 shows boy scouts doing a Hitler salute on a hiking trip. Photograph 2 depicts military men on a break in a desolate foreign location. Photograph 3 pictures prohibition activists pouring liquid into a sewer drain, likely alcohol during prohibition. The photographer aimed to convey that young people can be corrupted, soldiers find joy together abroad, and prohibition was seriously enforced. The photos provide historical insights into scouting, wartime experiences, and prohibition.
1. 1. Who are the people in the photograph?
Picture 1) boy scouts
Picture 2) military men
Picture 3) prohibition activists
2. What is the situation of the people in the photograph? Provide evidence from the photothat
tells you this.
Picture 1) they are riding their bikes around and what looks like giving the Hitler salute. They have
bags on their backs so maybe they are going on some kind of hiking trip.
Picture 2)they seem to be somewhere else other than the US. You can tell this because when
you look behind them it is desolate. They seem to be on a break from war because they have their
gear off and are taking pictures.
Picture 3) they look like they are pouring out some kid of liquid into the sewer drain. I think it
might be during prohibition because they are getting rid of the liquid on the street to prove they are
not hiding any.
3. What message do you think the photographer was trying to convey?
Picture 1) that even someone so young and innocent can be corrupted into doing something they
may not know a lot about.
Picture 2)that even though they are somewhere far from home fighting for their life, they are
having a good time being around their brothers.
Picture 3) that prohibition was being taken seriously and they wanted to make a big deal that they
are draining their alcohol.
2. 4. Why is this photograph important to history?
Picture 1) because it shows that boy scouts went on adventures with fellow boy scouts and they
believe in a cause they didn’t know much about.
Picture 2) because we are still going through the same things now where there are those
overseas fighting for our country.
Picture 3) because we went through a time where there was no alcohol allowed in the US.

battle?
