THE HISTORY OF THE HERSHEY COMPANY
1893- Milton Hershey discovers the art of chocolate making.
1894- He found the Hershey Chocolate Company and produces chocolate as a
coating for caramel. 1
1895- 114 different products were being manufactured from the Hershey
Chocolate Company.
1898-1900- Baby in the bean was adopted as Hershey’s trademark (until 1936
when replaced by the known block lettering) and the Hershey’s chocolate bar is
introduced.
1904- Ground is built for the Hershey Company factory.
1907- The town of Derry Church is renamed Hershey, in honor of Milton Hershey
and Hershey’s Kisses are first introduced.2
1908- Hershey’s milk chocolate bar are available with almonds.
1921-1922- Hershey’s kisses begin to be machine wrapped and first Reese’s was
covered with Hershey’s chocolate.
1925-1939- Mr. Goodbar and the Krackel bar are launched as Hershey’s products
and Hershey’s miniatures are introduced.
1941-1945- Hershey’s provides over a billion Ration bars for the troops during
WWII.

Launching better-for-you snacking!
HERSHEY, PA – The Hershey Company launches Brookside Fruit and Nut bars. The product
features wholesome ingredients, including whole roasted almonds, real fruit pieces and of course, dark
chocolate.
The Brookside Fruit and Nut bars are gluten and cholesterol free, contain zero artificial flavors, and
are a good source of fiber. The health-conscious product comes in three varieties, including cranberry with
blackberry flavor, cherry with pomegranate flavor, and blueberry with acai flavor.
“People love to snack throughout the day and want a broader range of wholesome options,”
said Tony Tyree, Vice President of Snacks & Grocery for The Hershey Company. “They also want to know
what’s in their food, how it’s made and where the ingredients come from. Inspired by our consumers’
wholesome snacking preferences, we’ve developed Brookside Fruit & Nut bars which are crafted from
simpler ingredients to create an extraordinarily delicious eating experience that can be enjoyed at any time
of day.”
The Brookside Fruit and Nut bars will be in a transparency packaging to offer an insight of the
product’s ingredients and texture. They will be available in a 1.4-ounce bar at a retail price of $1.69.

Sweet Lights Trolley on Hershey’s online box office or at Hershey Park. The ride includes a journey through
Hershey Sweet Lights on the Sweet Lights Trolley, along with enjoying chocolate, singing carols, and
entertainment by the conductors.
Hershey’s Chocolate World is known for its famous fun adventures offered, like the Hershey’s
Chocolate tour. To add to the ongoing events, Hershey’s holiday celebrations are a must-see for families.

MILTON HERSHEY:
FOUNDER OF THE HERSHEY COMPANY
Milton Snavely Hershey was born on
September 13, 1857, in Derry Township,
Pennsylvania to parents, Veronica Snavely and
Henry Hershey. Milton Hershey was the only
surviving child and grew up on a small farm in
central Pennsylvania. By 1867, Hershey’s father had
not been in the picture and Hershey was left to
begin work.1 At the age of 14, Hershey had dropped
out of school and began an apprenticeship with a
candy- maker in Lancaster, PA. Hershey decided to
start his own candy shop in Philadelphia, but years
later the business failed. Eventually, he moved to
Denver, where he found work with a confectioner,
who taught him how to make caramels using fresh
milk. Eventually, he returned to Lancaster and
started his first company, Lancaster Caramel
Company. He used the methods he learned in
Denver to manufacture caramels. 2 Within a few short years, Hershey’s caramels were shipped aboard and
he became one of the leading manufacturers of caramels. In 1893, at the Chicago exposition, Hershey
was introduced to how chocolate was being made. There, he was so intrigued he purchased the exhibit’s
chocolate-making equipment and was convinced this was the future of candy making. Aside from
business, Hershey married in 1898 to his wife, Catherine. By 1905, Hershey created the Hershey
Company, initially known for creating chocolates for caramels, but later focused on mass-distribute of milk
chocolate candy. Over the years, he created known products today like the Hershey bar and Hershey’s
kisses. As his wealth expanded, so did his visions in creating a community for his employees and residents
around. Hershey built schools, parks, churches, recreational facilities, trolley system and housing for
employees. Hershey and his wife focused their attention on helping children and funding what is now
known today as the Milton Hershey School. Years later, Hershey’s wife died and he never remarried.
Hershey continued to work till his 80s and passed away on October 13, 1945. Milton Hershey is known as
the “Chocolate King,” and his legacy continues today, for the Hershey Company is one of the world’s
greatest candy makers.
