2. Personal Growth
Personal Growth Defined
Personal Growth is the process of becoming a
better self. It encompasses areas such as
knowledge, education, emotions,
spirituality, health and social areas of a
person’s life.
In order to grow personally, I think one must
be aware of areas to look at and be
willing to incorporate changes into those
areas.
Growing Personally involves moving out of
one’s comfort zone and that always
stretches a person to grow. There are
many examples of having to do that in
this class that has allowed me to grow
personally this semester. Source: Personal Growth Image: http://www.robertreed.me/personal-growth/
3. Family Genealogy Project
One of the biggest areas of personal growth
for me was learning more about my
family ancestry. Interviewing my
grandfather was a good experience and
brought us closer together. The most
interesting thing for me was learning that
his father, my great grandfather worked
on so many iconic structures in New York
City. I love visiting New York City and
now knowing that a family member
made a visible impact on the city makes
me proud. It was also impressive to me
to learn that he had been invited to the
White House. It also was incredible to
learn that in just a few short generations
how far my family had come in the US
when leaving poverty behind in Ireland.
It gives me a sense of pride and I feel
more connected to my past.

4. Working Together on Semester Long Projects
I was fortunate that the people I
worked on with the group project
all worked well and we got along
well. Personally, I’d rather work by
myself than on a group project but
our group cooperated well. The
best way I grew as a person with
group projects was to
communicate well and do my best
for the project. Staying positive
and being open to differences of
opinion helps. Group projects do
stretch me as a person because I
tend to worry if everyone will do
their part of the project. I have
learned that communicating and
working together can be a good
growth experience.

5. Peer Reviews
Peer reviews have helped me
grow as person because my
writing has improved. Peer
Reviews have taught me to
be open to criticism and
see it as a help and not a
hindrance. I have learned
to accept constructive
criticism and revise
writings. I have also
learned how to share
criticism in ways that will
help people.

6. Being an Audience Member
I have grown in learning the
importance of being an
audience member. I never
really thought about the
importance of it. I have
learned to pay attention
because I want that same
respect. It is important to be
supportive because speaking
in front of a group can be
intimidating. I have learned
the importance of asking
questions and being involved
because I would want the
same courtesy.

7. This class has helped my personal growth in many ways. I have learned about
my family, myself and my roots. I have learned how to be a better writer and
how to engage with others in a group setting. I have enjoyed learning about
other people and other cultures. I have grown through the writing process and
learning about music. I have enjoyed learning about other ethnicities and
cultures. All in all, this class has helped me be a better writer and I have grown
in intellectual, social and emotional ways.
