 It is a type of current which alternates so
rapidly that it doesn’t stimulate motor or
sensory nerves.
 The frequency of this current should be
more that 500,000 cycles/sec.
 It is often termed as oscillating current.
 Here oscillation means swinging to and
fro.
 In this current electrons swing to and fro
in the circuit.
 The high frequency current is obtained
usually by discharging a condenser through
a low ohmic Resistance.
 Two Factors for obtaining different
frequencies of oscillation.
 Electro Static Field .
 Electro Magnetic Field .
 The electric force per unit charge.
 The electric field is Radially out word +Ve
test charge.
 The electric field inword is Redially –ve point
charge.
 An electromagnetic field is a classical field
produced by moving electric charge.
 Charged particles (such as Electrons And
Protons.
 Increases blood flow or circulation to
the area.
 Increases tissue temperature.
 Increases metabolism.
 Facilitate relaxation.
 Increases pain threshold.
 Decreased blood viscosity.
Soft tissue injury
Mobilization
Pain relief
 Pacemakers
 Metal implants
 Impaired sensation
 Pregnancy
 Hemorrhage
 Ischemic tissue
 Thrombosis
 Uncooperative patient
 Areas of poor circulation
 It is a therapeutic treatment most commonly
prescribed for muscle and joint conditions. It
uses high-frequency electrical current to
stimulate heat generation within body tissues.
 The heat can help with various processes
including:
1. Increasing blood flow.
2. Relieving pain.
3. Improving the mobility of tissues as they heal.
 There are three main types of diathermy:
1. Short-wave ratio frequencies in the range 1-
100 MHz. (Shortwave diathermy)
2. Microwaves typically in the 915 MHz or 2.45
GHz bands. (Microwave diathermy)
3. Ultrasound
 It uses high-frequency electromagnetic
energy to generate heat. It may be applied in
pulsed or continuous energy waves. It has
been used to treat pain from kidney stones,
and pelvic inflammatory disease. Its
commonly used for conditions that causes
pain and muscle spasm such as:
 Sprains, Strains, Bursitis, tenosynovitis.
 Microwave diathermy uses microwaves o
generate heat in the body. It can be used to
evenly warm deep tissues without heating
the skin. Since it can’t penetrate deep
muscles, its best suited for areas that are
closer to the skin, such as the shoulder.
 Ultrasound diathermy uses sound waves to
treat deep tissues. Heat is generated by the
vibration of tissues, this promotes blood flow
into the area. Ultrasound diathermy is used for:
1. Musculoskeletal sprains.
2. Strains
3. Muscle spasm
4. Joint contractures or adhesions
5. Neuromas
 Diathermy uses high-frequency electric
current to produce heat deep inside a
targeted tissue. It can reach areas as deep
as two inches beneath the skin’s surfaces.
 The diathermy machine does not apply heat
directly to the body. Instead, the waves
generated by the machine allow the body to
generate heat from within the targeted.
