QWould you share the
details of the MoU that
was signed between the
Ministry of Railways and the
University of Mumbai to
create a Centre for Railway
Research?
A MoU has been signed between
the University of Mumbai and the Indian
Railways to set up the Centre for Railway
Research (CRR).The Centre for Railway
Research will offer degree programmes,
postgraduate programmes along with
PhD programme in research areas relat-
ed to railways. There will
be course electives related to railway
technology too.
It has been agreed that the
University of Mumbai will take care of
distribution of facilities for higher educa-
tion, effective administration, financial
control and impart practical training to
the candidates at the University’s
Ratnagiri campus.
QWhat courses does the
CRR, Mumbai, plan to
incorporate on freight
transport by the Indian
Railways?
Research is inevitable for improving
the process of any organisation or
system. The Indian Railways is one
of the biggest networks in the world
managed by the Government of India.
Currently there are no dedicated
institutions of higher learning in railways
in the world. The need for an academic
institution was put forward by various
associations. Consequently the idea
of setting up a Centre for Railway
Research was recognised by the
Ministry of Railways resulting in the
establishment of the same at Ratnagiri
Campus of University of Mumbai.
The courses offered at CRR are:
Heavy Haul Technology, Vehicle
Dynamics, High-speed technologies,
Energy-efficient Traction Power Supply
Systems, Track Research, Use of
Artificial Intelligence for Predictive
Maintenance and Management, Material
Sciences for Railway-related Composites
including rubbers, polymers and
insulation materials, Development of
Integrated/Embedded Processors for
Railway Applications, Applications for
Access Control, Security and Safety
including Biometrics, Open Platform
Propulsion Control Systems for Rail
Vehicles, Non Conventional Drives and
Technology including Maglev, LIM and
Remote sensing and Measurement of
OHE, Track and Signals.
QDoes the institution plan
to provide hands-on
training for skill development
to its students?
We are focusing on creating
trained human resources in the field of
railways. Naturally this manpower will
be utilised in the organisation dealing
with these services.
QDoes the University of
Mumbai plan to
incorporate views of private
train operators while
preparing the curriculum?
The University will be interacting
with those who have knowledge in the
field, not only from India but any corner
of the world.
Gujarat-based JBS Academy
organised the third convocation
ceremony to confer certificates to
over 75 students who had completed
either of the three certificate courses:
International Freight Forwarding,
Certificate Course in Customs Clearance
and Diploma in International Freight
Forwarding & Customs Clearance.
Certificates were distributed on April 30,
2015 in the presence of leading logistics
practitioners of Gujarat and the faculty of
JBS Academy.The faculty, being working
professional with more than 10-12 years’
experience, gave a series of tutorials to
enable students understand the intricacies
of what they execute in their day-to-day.
A written exam was conducted to
assess the competence level of the par-
ticipants that was initially
addressed by VassudevaRao
CGM, NWR CONCOR and Samir
Mankad, Ex. Director GSEC. A
number of programmes have
already been announced by JBS
Academy. In the last five years the
academy has conducted over 128
programmes training more than
2800 participants.
The same were done stand
alone; customised and in
partnership with other training centres etc.
It included training for port personnel,
custodians, exporters, importers,
CHAs,steamer agents, freight forwarders,
IATA agents, etc.
In keeping withVision 2020, the railways will need to develop cutting-edge
indigenous technologies. Rajan Welukar, Vice Chancellor, University of
Mumbai talks about the courses for Indian Railways.
