This document discusses astrophotography as a hobby in Guyana. It can be done with a budget-friendly beginner's telescope and smartphone, or with more expensive equipment like telescopes over 6 inches and DSLR cameras. The types of astrophotography covered are planetary imaging of objects like Jupiter, Saturn, Mars, and Venus, as well as deep sky imaging of nebulae, galaxies, stars, and the moon. Taking pictures of the night sky can be for personal reasons like meaning or study, or scientific reasons to learn more about celestial objects. Examples are provided of images taken of various planets, galaxies, nebulae, and stars.
2. What is Astrophotography?
• Taking pictures of celestial objects (stars, planets, galaxies, etc.) for hobby
or scientific purposes.
• An exciting hobby that every Guyanese can participate in, regardless of age
and class.
• Budget friendly endeavor, or very expensive depending on what you want
to accomplish.
• How to start?
Least expensive: Beginner’s telescope with a smartphone.
Mid-budget: 4-6” aperture Newtonian reflector with DSLR (digital single-
lens reflex) camera
High budget: 6” and above aperture with DSLR or CCD (charged coupled
device – mainly for scientific study)
• DO NOT SELL YOUR HOUSE OR CAR (which is what I would do)
4. Why take pictures of the night sky?
• Personal reasons: meaning, purpose, religious, hobby, study
• Scientific reasons: studying the nature and motion, past and future of
celestial objects.
6. Typical Astrophotography Gear
• Telescope (Refractor or Reflector)
• Camera (DSLR)
• Laptop to control aspects of the telescope and post-processing
• Battery power pack
• USB cables
• Post-processing software
