Natural – pollen grains, volcanic eruptions, forest
fires, dust storms, spores, bacteria and other
microbes.
Man- made / Anthropogenic – Industrial units,
thermal power plants, automobiles, fossil fuel,
mining, nuclear explosions.

Substance dwelling temporarily or permanently
in the air
A pollutant can be solid (large or sub-
molecular), liquid or gas.
It may originate from natural or anthropogenic
source (or both)
8. CLASSIFICATION OF POLLUTANTS
Primary pollutants: are emitted directly
from identifiable sources.
Secondary pollutants: are produced in the
atmosphere when certain chemical reaction
takes place among primary pollutants.
