1. Radio Trails Analysis
Trail for
(station/channel)
‘Last Chance to See’ (BBC2 Wildlife documentary)
Target audience People who enjoy listening/watching programmes about wildlife.
Most likely middle aged/older men and women.
Tone of voice? There are two voices in this advert: Stephen Fry and a female narrator. Fry’s
tone of voice is calm but excitable, he sounds very interested in the topic. He
uses formal, descriptive language to help the listener create a visual image of
what he has seen.
The voice of the female is confident and optimistic. She uses formal language
in a professional manner. Her role is to inform the audience of content as well
as date and time that the trail is being aired.
Sound effects?
(SFX) There were no sound effects used in this trail.
Wildtrack/ambient
sound? There is archival footage from the documentary itself which we can hear.
Use of music? There is background music throughout that is relevant to the trail. It is
something the audience would be able to immediately link to the topic. It also
maintains interest and makes the trail more upbeat.
How many tracks? There are 2 tracks used: The background music, and the voiceovers.
Sound levels? The sound levels are relatively stable throughout. The background music
remains at a constant level. The levels of Fry’s voice is the only level that
differs slightly. The first time we hear him he is quieter than the female voice.
However, this is taken from when he is actually in wildlife and needs to be
quiet so that he doesn’t disturb the animals. Although this may prove slightly
more difficult to hear, it creates realism. His voice then matches the females
when we hear it again. The female voice is equal.
Length? 35 seconds
