a. Separate the torque converter from the transmission. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly,
"Torque Converter, Transmission and Transfer Gear - Separate".

NOTICE
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during
performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair
of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers
before opening any compartment or disassembling any component
containing fluids.
Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool
Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on
Cat products.
Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

1. Remove retaining ring (1). Remove retarder rotor (2).
2. Remove seal ring (4) from carrier (3) on each side of retarder rotor (2).
3. Remove carrier (3).

Note: The carrier will be destroyed when the carrier is removed from the retarder.
4. Remove bolts (5). Remove race (6).
5. Attach Tooling (A) and a suitable lifting device to housing assembly (7). The weight of
housing assembly (7) is approximately 73 kg (160 lb).
6. Remove housing assembly (7) from the torque converter.

7. Position housing assembly (7), as shown.
8. Remove bolts (9). Remove gear (8).
9. Use Tooling (B) to remove retaining ring (10) from each side of gear (8).
10. Remove shaft (11).

11. Use a suitable press and Tooling (C) to remove the bearing from gear (8).
12. Remove bolts (12). Remove housing assembly (13).
13. Remove piston (14) from housing assembly (13). Remove seals (15).

14. Remove disc assembly (16).
15. Remove retainer (17) from shaft (22). Remove ring seals (18).
16. Remove gear (19) from shaft (22).
17. Remove bolts (20) and retainer (21). Use Tooling (D) to remove retaining ring (23).

18. Position the torque converter, as shown. Remove bolts (24).
19. Attach Tooling (A) and a suitable lifting device to impeller assembly (25). The weight of
impeller assembly (25) is approximately 41 kg (90 lb).
20. Remove impeller assembly (25) from housing (26).
21. Remove retaining ring (27) and the bearing.

22. Use Tooling (F) to separate shaft (22) from carrier assembly (28) and the bearing. Remove
the bearing.
23. Remove bolts (29). Remove stator assembly (31) from impeller (30).

24. Remove bolts (32) from gear (33).
25. Use Tooling (B) to drive carrier assembly (28) and gear (33) out of impeller (30).
26. Use Tooling (B) to drive carrier (34) out of impeller (30).
27. Use Tooling (B) to drive carrier assembly (28) out of bearing (35).

28. Remove gear (33) from carrier assembly (28).
29. Remove seal ring (36).
30. Remove rings (37). Use Tooling (D) to remove ring (38) from shaft (22).

31. Install Tooling (E). Tooling (E) must be seated on the shoulders of turbine (39). Tooling (E)
must not contact the splines on shaft (22).
Note: Tooling (E) must be used in order to support turbine (39) or damage to turbine (39)
will result.
32. Use a suitable press to remove shaft (22) from turbine (39). Remove bearing race (40) and
the spacer from turbine (39).

NOTICE
Keep all parts clean from contaminants.
Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.

1. Lower the temperature of shaft (22). Use Tooling (D) to install ring (38). Install shaft (22) in
the turbine until ring (38) rests on the turbine. Install rings (37).
2. Install the spacer. Raise the temperature of bearing race (40). Install bearing race (40) to
turbine (39) and shaft (22).
3. Install seal ring (36).

4. Install gear (33) to carrier assembly (28).
5. Raise the temperature of bearing (35). Install bearing (35) on carrier assembly (28).
6. Lower the temperature of carrier (34). Install carrier (34) into impeller (30).
Note: Make sure that the bolt holes are aligned.

7. Position gear (33). Install bolts (32). Tighten bolts (32) to a torque of 50 ± 7 N·m
(37 ± 5 lb ft).
8. Position stator assembly (31) on impeller (30) and on carrier assembly (28). Install bolts
(29). Tighten bolts (29) to a torque of 40 ± 5 N·m (30 ± 4 lb ft).
9. Install carrier assembly (28) on impeller (39).

10. Raise the temperature of the bearing. Install the bearing on shaft (22).
11. Lower the temperature of the bearing. Install the bearing. Install retaining ring (27).
12. Use Tooling (A) and a suitable lifting device to install impeller assembly (25) to housing
(26). The weight of impeller assembly (25) is approximately 41 kg (90 lb).

13. Position the torque converter, as shown. Install bolts (24). Tighten bolts (24) to a torque of
30 ± 5 N·m (22 ± 4 lb ft).
14. Use Tooling (D) to install retaining ring (23). Position retainer (21). Install bolts (20).
Tighten bolts (20) to a torque of 50 ± 7 N·m (37 ± 5 lb ft).
15. Install gear (19) on shaft (22).

16. Install ring seals (18). Install retainer (17) on shaft (22).
17. Install disc assembly (16).
18. Install seals (15). Install piston (14) into housing assembly (13).
19. Install housing assembly (13).

20. Install bolts (12). Tighten bolts (12) to a torque of 50 ± 7 N·m (37 ± 5 lb ft).
21. Use a suitable press and Tooling (C) to install the bearing to gear (8).
22. Install shaft (11).
23. Use Tooling (B) to install retaining ring (10) on each side of gear (8).

24. Position housing assembly (7), as shown.
25. Position gear (8). Install bolts (9).
26. Attach Tooling (A) and a suitable lifting device to housing assembly (7). The weight of
housing assembly (7) is approximately 73 kg (160 lb).
27. Install housing assembly (7) onto the torque converter.

28. Install race (6). Install bolts (5).
29. Install carrier (3).
30. Install seal ring (4) to carrier (3) on each side of retarder rotor (2).
31. Install retarder rotor (2). Install retaining ring (1).
End By:
a. Connect the torque converter to the transmission. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly,
"Torque Converter, Transmission and Transfer Gear - Connect".

A. Remove the transmission. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Torque Converter,
Transmission, and Transfer Gear - Separate".

Note: Cleanliness is an important factor. Before the disassembly procedure, the exterior of the
component should be thoroughly cleaned. This will help to prevent dirt from entering the internal
mechanism.
NOTICE

1. Remove cover (1) .

2. Remove bolt (5). Remove retainer (6). Remove the O-ring seal. Remove yoke (4) .
3. Remove bolts (2). Remove cage assembly (3) .
4. Remove seal (7) from cage assembly (3) .

5. Position cage assembly (3). Remove bolts (8). Remove plate (9). Remove O-ring seal (10) .
6. Use Tooling (A) and a suitable press in order to remove bearings (11) from cage assembly
(3) .

Note: If the shaft is not supported, the shaft will fall when bolt (13) is removed.
7. Position transfer case (12). Support shaft (14). Remove bolt (13). Remove the retainer.
Remove shaft (14) .
8. Remove gear (15) from transfer case (12) .
9. Use Tooling (B) in order to remove bearing (16) from shaft (14) .
10. Remove bolts (17) .

11. Attach Tooling (C) and a suitable lifting device to cage (18). Remove cage (18) and the
pinion as a unit. The weight of cage (18) and the pinion is approximately 34 kg (76 lb).
12. Remove bolts (19). Remove plate (20). Remove bearing cone (21) .

13. Use Tooling (D) and a suitable press in order to remove cage (18) from pinion (22) .
14. If necessary, use Tooling (E) in order to remove bearing cone (23) from pinion (22). If
necessary, use Tooling (E) in order to remove bearing cone (24) from pinion (22) .
15. Remove retaining ring (25) in order to remove bearing cup (26) from cage (18) .

16. Use Tooling (A) and a suitable press in order to remove the bearing cup from cage (18) .
17. Remove plug (27). Remove the dowel that holds the race in position.
18. Remove bearing race (28). Remove bearing race (29) .
