Start By:
A. Remove the push-pull hook. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Push-Pull Hook -
Remove and Install".
1. Move the ejector to the eject position.

2. Remove guard assemblies (1) .
3. Disconnect harness assembly (2) and the clips. Reposition harness assembly (2) .
4. Remove guard assemblies (3) .

5. Remove cover (4) .
6. Remove retaining ring (5) from drive shaft (6) .

7. Install Tooling (A) in drive shaft (6). Use Tooling (A) in order to partially remove drive
shaft (6) .
8. Attach a suitable lifting device to drive shaft (6). Remove drive shaft (6). The weight of
drive shaft (6) is approximately 34 kg (75 lb).
9. Remove bolts (7). Use two people in order to remove tube assembly (8). The weight of tube
assembly (8) is approximately 24 kg (52 lb).

10. Remove yoke assembly (9) .
11. Use Tooling (C) to remove retaining ring (10) from yoke assembly (9) .
12. Remove bearing (11), spacer (12), bearing (13), and spacer (14) from yoke assembly (9) .

13. Remove nuts (15) .
14. Use Tooling (B) to remove bearing cage (16) .
15. If necessary, remove studs (17) .

16. Remove seal (18) from bearing cage (16) .
17. Remove plugs (22) and the bearing dowels.
18. Remove bearing (19), spacer (20), and bearing (21) from bearing cage (16) .

1. Install bearing (19), spacer (20), and bearing (21) into bearing cage (16) .
2. Install the bearing dowels and plugs (22) .
Note: Lubricate seal (18) with the lubricant that is being sealed.
3. Use Tooling (D) to install seal (18) into bearing cage (16) .

4. If necessary, install studs (17). Tighten studs (17) to a torque of 55 ± 10 N·m (41 ± 7 lb ft).
Install bearing cage (16) and nuts (15) .
Note: Steps 5 through 12 must be preformed in order to ensure proper alignment of the
engine assembly to the axle.
5. Remove bolt (23), washer (24), and seal (25) (not shown).

Note: Do not tighten Tooling (F) .
6. Install Tooling (E). Install Tooling (F). Hand tighten Tooling (F) only.
7. Install Tooling (G) into Tooling (E) .
8. Install Tooling (H). Use Tooling (G) to check the alignment of the axle housing and the
engine.

9. When Tooling (G) can slide into both Tooling (E) and Tooling (H), the axle housing and the
engine are in alignment. If necessary, adjust the position of the engine in order to achieve
alignment.
10. Remove Tooling (H) and Tooling (G) .

11. Remove Tooling (F) and Tooling (E) .
12. Install seal (25) (not shown), washer (24), and bolt (23) .
Note: Assemble the end of bearing (13) that has a radius toward the shoulder of yoke
assembly (9) .
13. Install bearing (11), spacer (12), bearing (13), and spacer (14) to yoke assembly (9) .
14. Use Tooling (C) to install retaining ring (10) to yoke assembly (9) .

15. Install yoke assembly (9) .
Note: Prior to the installation of tube assembly (8), place a dial indicator on the face of the
yoke assembly. Indicate the outside diameter of yoke of the transfer gear. This reading must
not exceed 5 mm (0.2 inch) total indicator reading.
16. Use two people in order to position tube assembly (8). The weight of tube assembly (8) is
approximately 24 kg (52 lb). Install bolts (7). Tighten bolts (7) to a torque of 435 ± 20 N·m
(321 ± 15 lb ft).

17. Attach a suitable lifting device to drive shaft (6). Install drive shaft (6). The weight of drive
shaft (6) is approximately 34 kg (75 lb).
18. Remove Tooling (A) from drive shaft (6) .

19. Use Tooling (C) to install retaining ring (5) to drive shaft (6) .
20. Install cover (4) .
21. Install guard assemblies (3) .

22. Connect harness assembly (2). Position harness assembly (2) and install the clips.
23. Install guard assemblies (1) .
End By: Install the push-pull hook. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Push-Pull Hook -
Remove and Install".

1. Loosen clamp (6). Remove bolts (1) and reposition manifold (2) .
2. Disconnect hose assembly (3) .

Scavenge Pump and Mounting (Flywheel) - Disassemble

Disassembly Procedure
Start By:
A. Remove the flywheel scavenge pump. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Scavenge
Pump and Mounting (Flywheel) - Remove".
NOTICE
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during
performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair
of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers
before opening any compartment or disassembling any component
containing fluids.
Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Dealer Service
Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain
fluids on Caterpillar products.
Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

1. Remove O-ring seal (2). Remove bolts (1) and body assembly (3) .
2. Remove O-ring seal (4). Remove bearing (5) .
3. Remove shaft assembly (6) and gear assembly (7) .

Note: Lubricate the pump with oil before running.
1. Install bearing (11) into gear assembly (7) .

2. Install bearing (9) so that the joint is 30 ± 15 degrees from the centerline, as shown.
3. Use Tooling (A) to install bearing (9) by an additional 1.57 mm (0.062 inch).
4. Install dowel (8). Install shaft (10) .
5. Install shaft assembly (6) and gear assembly (7) .

6. Install bearing (5) so that the joint is 30 ± 15 degrees from the centerline, as shown.
7. Use Tooling (A) to install bearing (5) by an additional 1.04 mm (0.041 inch).
8. Install O-ring seal (4) .
9. Position body assembly (3) and install bolts (1). Install O-ring seal (2) .
End By: Install the flywheel scavenge pump. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Scavenge
Pump and Mounting (Flywheel) - Install".

Retarder Hydraulic Control Valve - Disassemble

Disassembly Procedure
Start By:
A. Remove the retarder hydraulic control valve. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly,
"Retarder Hydraulic Control Valve - Remove".
Personal injury can result from being struck by parts propelled by a
released spring force.
Make sure to wear all necessary protective equipment.
