2. Care of perineum/genitalia:-
Definition:- “Cleansing of the external genitalia, perineum
and surrounding areas.”
Purpose:-
 To prevent infection.
 To promote comfort
 To remove secretion
 To promote healing
 To keep cleanliness
 To prevent bed odour.

3. Articles required:-
 Mackintosh and draw sheet.
 A jug with warm water.
 Sterile gauze, piece with antiseptic lotion and artery
forceps and thumb forceps in antiseptic lotion.
 Kidney tray
 clean linen
 Pads
 Dressing
 Bedpan
 Dry rag pieces
 Drap sheet and screen

4. Procedure Female patient:-
 Weather necessary equipments
 Wash your hands.
 Put on gloves.
 Explain procedure to the client.
 Provide privacy.
 Assist client to back lying or side lying position, place
towel or bedpan under hips.
 Cover client with a towel or sheet.
 Expose peri area.
 Gently wash the inner legs and outer peri area along the
out side of the labia.
 Use a clean area of wash cloth for each wipe of peri
area.

5.  Wash the outer skin folds from front to back.
 Wash to inner labia from front to back.
 Gently open all skin folds and wash the inner area from
front to back.
 Rinse the area well, starting with inner most and
proceeding outward.
 Wash and rinse the anal area.
 Dry the peri area with dry rag pieces.
 Apply the clean pad.
 Remove the bedpan by supporting the hip as

6.  If indicated, apply the lotion or ointments.
 Reposition or dress client as appropriate.
 Dispose the linen.
 Remove, clean and store equipment.
 Cleanse hands.
 Record the procedure.

7. Male patient:-
 Gather necessary equipment.
 Wash your hands.
 Apply gloves.
 Explain procedure to the client.
 Provide privacy.
 Client should be in back laying or side lying position,
place towel or bedpan under hips.
 Fill basin with warm water.
 Cover client with a towel or sheet.
 Expose perineal area.

8.  Using a circular motion, gently wash the penis by lifting it
and cleansing from the tip downward. Rinse and dry.
 Wash and rinse the scrotum.
 Wash and rinse other skin areas between the legs.
 Wash and rinse the anal area.
 Dry the peri area with dry rag pieces.
 May apply a light dusting of powder under scrotum to
prevent rubbing on skin.

9.  Remove towel or sheet.
 Remove and dispose of gloves.
 Remove, clean and store equipment.
 Wash hands.
 Make the client and store equipment.
 Make the client comfortable.
 Record the procedure
